[Archive] Artisan's Contest XII

Nicodemus:

Welcome all to Artisan?Ts Contest XII!

What to enter?

The theme for this Artisan’s Contest is to write a short piece, taking what ever form you like, be it a short story, a historical account, a poem or haiku - what ever you want - with a Chaos Dwarf Weapon as the main subject.

We want everyone to be as open-minded as possible with this one.  After reading the rules (see below), if you’re still totally unsure what you can write about or what form it can take, discuss it here!

Deadline

The deadline for the submission of entries is the 23rd of March 2012 11:59pm EST.

Only enter if you are happy with the rules as they are stated below.

Rules of the Competition

Each member may only enter once.

The length of writing can be anywhere from 10-words to a maximum of 800 words (title doesn’t count toward the word limit).  Although the lower limit is low, this is to encourage all quality submissions, sometimes quality doesn’t require quantity. Please don’t abuse the lower limit and submit nonsense though, we’ll be reading through these and really want to good honest Dawi’Zharr ingenuity and effort.

The Chaos Dwarf “weapon” can be what ever you want it to be.  A weapon could be a literal weapon, such as a Hellcannon, an axe, a terrible furnace for sacrificing slaves, a favourite lashing whip, branding iron, a humble cudgel, or the weaopn could even be words directed at one’s sworn political enemies!!

You MUST have the following per entry:

1.  A title of not more than 15 words.

2.  Some writing, in English please, of not less than 10 words and not more than 800 words,

If your entry does not conform to the above by the deadline it will probably not be included.

Other Stuff

NO ART OR MODEL PHOTOS allowed.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar will not be corrected.

There isn’t a specific format required.  Staff will amend all entries to be the same format regardless of how they are sent.

How to Enter?

Submit your entry by sending a PM to Staff (a special user that all Staff have access to).

Do not post it in the forum.

How will this be judged?

By early April we will post the entries to a new entries thread where members can vote.

If there are more than 10 entries there will be Gold, Silver and Bronze Artisan’s medals.

-----------------------------------------

By way of example, here’s a possible entry:

Title: Daemon Flask of Ashak: Instructions for Use.

And Lord Zharrghast raised the Daemon Flask of Ashak up on high, saying, “O HASHUT, bless this Thy holy flask that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy.” And HASHUT did grin and the Dawi’Zharr did feast upon the flesh of Dwarfs and Elves and Fimir and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and the large arachnarok."

And HASHUT spake, saying, “First shalt thou take out the Daemon Flask of Ashak, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Daemon Flask of Ashak towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.”

This sounds great! Can this weapon be at a large size? Like a huge cannon?

gIL^
Sure, anything at all. It could be an airship (provided it's used as a weapon) it could be a cannon, it could even be something the size of a tooth/tusk pick.

ryanamandaanna:

Can it be put to music?

EDIT: I realize the answer is probably no… but it doesn’t hurt to check.

Zanko:

Sounds very interesting, though I will have a lot of difficulties as a non english native speaker … :~

But we will see!

Abecedar:

Don’t worry Zanko, us english will have hard enough time. The use of “english” in poetry is subjective to the level of “Social pretentiousness” of the goose who is describing it.

The Haiku thought has me really intrigued. Will probably end up as a limerick knowing my skills

DAGabriel:

Nice idea for the contest. Sent my piece of word mangling.

Borador:

Nice contest, will see what I can do

I can only really see this working if you were to recommend it being read to a particular tune (i.e. Mary Had a Little Lamb or something). That probably only works for people who speak English and also know the tune... if it's Megadeth or something from Lady Ga Ga or similar, then it requires people to go and get the song to appreciate your entry, etc etc. Sounds like a recipe for not being a popular entry.

Nicodemus:

If English is not your first language then why not write it from the perspective of a slave? They don’t have great language/communication skills

vulcanologist:

Wow… Entries pouring in already! Have to put on my artistic big thinking hat for this one!

Zargon the Black:

Have entered. I put my entry thru a spell checker before hand but have just realised i spelled 'Matter" as “Mater” so if an admin can fix that before they get posted would be awesome… thanks to the wifey for pointing that out to me…:hat off

vulcanologist:

Entered this morning!

Obsidian Muse:

Ah, I do love the art of writing. Thanks to my social skills, or lack there-off, it’s the best way for me to explain what goes through my head. I still have some miniatures to paint, but as soon as that is done I will write something interesting for this contest.

Nicodemus:

Got mine submitted… It’s a good’n!

… and still loads of time for others to get their submissions in!!

Abecedar:

Having trouble with this one now. Gotta find a starting point somehow
