[Archive] Artisan's Contest XVIII

Fuggit Khan:

I’ve got zero idea’s.

I did have one idea, but it won’t work :frowning:

I’m gonna throw some more slaves on the fire and give it more thought…

Abecedar:

Dinadans got some to spare. Send some slaves over to steal one.

Dînadan:

You can bribe me to use one of mine, but only if I get the medal if ‘you’ win.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Abecedar:

One idea, with multitudes of additional refinements has stretched my patience with myself.

So the (only) idea has been pared down into hopefully connectable elements that i can expand

if and when I get the chance.

Abecedar:

Another thing gnawing at me is the sparsity of activity on the thread this contest.

I really hope we will have people enter.

Admiral:

I’ve been busy at ships the last weeks and have forgot to bump it. Will start on my entry after the escorts are finished.

Yes, there is a lack of activity in the thread, but I’ve seen similar cases in past contests (whether model or writing) where many entrants don’t post in the announcement thread, but still enters.

Still, just to make sure: Is this a working theme? Is there any adjustment or clarification you’d like to see in case the contest theme seems to block you from entering?

(Eg. we could make a small expansion and include invented special characters if necessary.) Don’t forget you can always pick some idea you like from the examples in the first post, should you be starved for ideas.

Abecedar:

Apart from the artisans, the other irons I have in the fire for immediate attention are the Man O War ships and island fortress, Some (4) village buildings so I can have a game of WHFB with my son.

Jackswift:

I plan to enter, but have alot going on right now that I am working on for upcoming games within my local gaming group.  The idea I currently have has potential, but I still need to flesh it out or find another one.  Characters make up a realtively small part of an army so I haven’t spent much time or thought on custom character types ones prior to this.  Plus a suggestion… don’t list quite so many examples and take up so many good ideas at the start next time :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Now if the contest had been to design a warmachine…
Cheers, JR

Fuggit Khan:

I still have zero idea’s…I want to enter, but what hampers me so far is that I already have numerous unique character models in my army, such as Ukkad Firebrow with his death rocket bazooka, a slave master, etc.

Clock is ticking, I need to think of something…perhaps I need to sacrifice more slaves to Hashut for a vision :hashut

Dînadan:

You could always make an apprentice for one of them. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Alternatively, how about something that in regular games could be used as a unit champion?

Admiral:

Thank you for input, folks!

@Jackswift: But I’m not taking up ideas, I’m giving them away for free! Pick and choose if you like to. :cheers

Of course, we can cut down on or skip the example box in the future, should you like it. I’ve found through the years that quite a lot of people like to be handed some examples of possible new ideas to get the creative spark of their own going. The purpose is twofold, to inspire some and to hand out free ideas should some not be inspired. Also, some examples help clarify what’s allowed in the contest, which is often a reason for questions in less clearly defined themes than such with obvious borders like BSBs or Taur’ruk Golden Hat themes.

What do you think, keep examples as is in the future, cut down or skip altogether? (This is for modelling/painting contests, I believe they clearly serve a purpose in the writing ones.)

@Dînadan: That’s a valid idea, since the future create a new infantry unit theme won’t feature command groups to keep the field even (Bloodbeard gave very good arguments for this when I discussed it with him, and he’s convinced fully).

On the other hand, many hero types in other army books are little more than beefed-up unit champions, like Savage Orc Big Bosses and Wood Elf heroes.

Zanko:

The model arrived some days ago, yesterday I finished the conversion work an today I will start painting. :cheers

I still have to find a name and a backstory! :~

Go ahead and keep the examples as I am sure they are definitely useful to some, but maybe a few less examples in the list :). For no particular reason (perhaps anti-plagiarism was hammered into my subconscious too deeply in university) I tend to shy away from anything already referenced in examples. Granted my current idea could be take as a variation on one of them... so... take my comments with an appropriate grain of salt.

Admiral
I agree with Jackswift, please keep the examples. They really do help with clarifying what is acceptable, as well as offer inspirational idea's.
I rely on the examples a lot...mainly to help rein in my overly active imagination ;)

And da Khan finally has an idea for this contest :cheers
Found some inspiration over the weekend...it certainly won't win me any medals (which is perfectly fine), but it will be a fun character model to make. And that's what I like about these contests, the fun of coming up with new models :hat off

Admiral:

Roger roger. Perhaps a little less of examples, if I can rein in my imagination. Thanks for input, and best of luck, folks! See you at the goal line!

Admiral:

Bump. Join the fun if you haven’t! Will be gone away from home this week, but should be back next week in case you have any questions.

Fuggit Khan:

I finished putting the character model together yesterday…now gonna try to paint him as fast as possible before I leave on vacation next week.

May Hashut bless me with faster painting skills :hashut

Abecedar:

Mine has come together reasonably well. Enough to get me last place I hope.

It still needs a few touches so I’ll try to be careful and not over-do it.

Dînadan:

I’ve gotten lazy and work has stalled on mine - will have to rectify that.

Admiral:

Looking forward to see them, folks. Started a tad late on my entry, but should be able to make it in time.
