Mmmh, time to enter my preferences.
I used to play RPGs maaaaaany years ago and just for a short time and with a few consoles, but they gave me hours of entertainment and countless ideas to my imagination.
My Megadrive/Genesis favourites:
Phantasy Star’s saga, even the first episode on Master System/SG-1000 Mark III
Shining in the Darkness/Shining Force
Not technically RPGs but kind of: Arcuss’ Odissey, Wanderers from Ys (even tought the first episode on Master System was a cool RPG).
Sega CD: Lunar, Lunar II the silver star
Super Nintendo/Famicom: Zelda’s saga of course, and first episodes from the Final Fantasy saga.
I quitted videogames when Play station entered into the video games arena but I managed to play and enjoy Final Fantasy VII.

Most of the above are pretty cool and I have played them at one time or another.
My RPG favourite will however always remain Dungeon Master. I’m surprised nobody mentioned that one, but maybe I’m just showing my age here now…
Oh; and I really enjoyed Neverwinter Nights as well.
And, although this might be a tangent since it’s not your standard (fantasy) RPG but still has a LOT of development and choices (not to mention emotional attachment to the members of the teams over the course of the game), my ‘all-time most favouritest game of all’ is UFO: Enemy Unknown (a.k.a. X-COM). Oh; the hours/days/weeks of my life consumed by that beauty…:cheers

I always preferred TFTD, the follow up. Had a few fixes I preferred. I think I'm in the middle of playing one of those on my laptop actually.
