[Archive] Bloodbowl special event card

Oh too bad!

Thanks for the info cornixt.

Herby:

Not much going on here. Where are the Blood Bowl enthusiasts?

I’m very excited about this release. Come on guys! At last a new Blood Bowl edition with fresh and great miniatures. Not this old miniatures corpses from the past. The last edition of BB should have had such good miniatures. By the time most of the BB minis were outdated compared to many Warhammer releases.

I remember very well when I started my first Warhammer army back then. I got this excellent Grimgor Ironhide. What a great orc model. And then I held a box of that lousy Orc Boar Boyz in my hands! Oh man! I was really astonished about the huge difference of quality.

Admiral:

I’m following with interest, though in a silent way here. We’ve got quite some enthusiasm worked up in my hobby group, particularly for the beautiful Skaven miniatures being used for WHFB armies. We’ve found the Orcs to be great, and though the Human sculpts are very well-crafted, we’ve found them a tad lackluster in their lack of fluffy Empire or medieval Bretonnian clothing and armour. Good if one like them generic, though (grounds the whole game in rugby), and certainly useful for 40k conversions.

Blood Bowl is a great game and we’ll pick this up down the road. As for miniatures, almost all Blood Bowl teams showing up on the internet or in White Dwarf were converted Warhammer models as far as I can remember. This update has been a long time incoming, and best of all: If the pattern of the plastic Skaven team holds true, we will see our first good-looking Chaos Dwarfs ever released by Games Workshop in the time ahead. :cheers

And you know what? The price is on the level for the Skaven. I didn’t expect this after the previous years of skyrocketing prices. :o

Bitterman:

I’m a massive Blood Bowl fan, but my excitement is tempered by the facts that (a) it’s the same game again… just with a different board size, template size, base size and model scale in an attempt to get you to buy it again, and (b) it’s not complete, nor even close to it. The last edition of BB had six teams in the base game, six in Death Zone and something like thirteen more added in the LRB. New edition? Two in the base game, a handful more in Death Zone Season One and the rest to follow later (shamelessly announced as “new” each time of course). So you’re just going to have to keep buying new “seasons” of Death Zone… to get back to where you already were before.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s not the worst thing GW have ever done, “same great game but better models” has some merit, and at least they didn’t AoS it. It will introduce new players, and reinvigorate many of the old ones, which is never a bad thing (though the videogame means BB never really went away anyway). But “same game but better models” isn’t exactly making me leap out of my seat, either.

cornixt:

But since it is all the same, you don’t need to buy any of the new stuff at all. Just use the CRP rulebook and you already have everything, even the cards are the same. There’s a few tiny changes but nothing else.

The big advantage is that now there are a whole new load of gamers who can get into the game.

tjub:

There are a few changes, but if you don’t want to buy it then don’t. Cant see the use of people complaining on the internet as its some kind of human right to get a new army book or whatever. You know what you buy, if you don’t like it save your money for something else. And Bitterman its not directed directly against you. Just that every time something new comes out people freaks out either its changes or it hasn’t or its too expensive or they don’t want another copy of a core rules set. Dags att gilla läget…

I think its super that BB gets some love again, I wouldn’t do it exactly as they have done it. But I didn’t for CRP either, has been running a league with house rules for 7+ years now and travel to several tournaments a year. None of which are exactly the same either. So chill out internet.

Bitterman:

I wasn’t “complaining on the internet” as much as responding to the poster who wondered where all the enthusiasm was… literally just answering a question.

Anyway, having spent a few hours poring over the rulebooks… yeah, the core rules are practically identical to the CRP. They’ve literally copy-pasted it, then tidied up the worst of the grammar and changed to gender-neutral pronouns. Only rules changes I can see are to remove the four-minute turn time limit (which no-one ever enforced) and Human Catchers are now 10K cheaper. I’m happy the rules are the same, but I do think they could have given the text a much more thorough going over than they did. Fluff and crunch are freely intermixed in the same paragraph, so as a rules reference it’s not always very clear. No better or worse than the CRP, but a missed chance to improve it (without changing the actual mechanics). And yeah, even the Special Play cards are a subset of the CRP, presumably with the missing ones to follow in an expansion.

The Deathzone rules have changed significantly more. Particularly the league structure which has completely changed beyond recognition (no more Open format, teams must be re-hired each season); but also changes to MVPs, removal of Piling On (hurrah!), and a few other things. I’m not sure what the point in Expensive Mistakes was, and making Spiralling Expenses optional seems like a boost to high-TV teams that the completely revamped retirement / re-hiring system may or may not compensate for; time will tell. The need for a day one errata is disappointing though, especially as the errata fixes things they copied from the CRP then changed and managed to change wrong… nice job…?

Perhaps the most mystifying change is the new Weeping Dagger skill granted to Gutter Runners only. When they Badly Hurt someone, on a 4+ that gets upgraded to Miss Next Game. Um… why…? Why give them a skill that’ll hardly ever have an impact (50% of 50% of 16.7% of the number of times a Gutter Runner, of all things, blocks someone, knocks them down, and beats their armour)? Why give them a skill that literally doesn’t benefit them at all, and only makes things worse for the opponent? Why decide that Gutter Runners - those MA9 AG4 touchdown machines capable of specialising into basically any role, including an easy one-turn TD on demand - needed buffing with another skill? Baffling. I mean, it’s not terrible, just unnecessary and pointless. I guess the dev team restricting themselves to copy-pasting the CRP wasn’t such a bad thing if this is any indication.

Oh - worth mentioning that all the teams that aren’t re-released yet have been made available for free, which is a nice touch (not that anyone would have refused to play against them anyway of course, but still, it ameliorates the feeling of paying for something everyone knows to be incomplete). Also plenty of hints about what’s to come, including Halfling and Goblin ref models (suggesting expanded ref rules at some point?), additional pitches, and something to do with the trapdoor in each half of the pitch (probably in-game substitutions or something). I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

I am somewhat surprised that the extra Special Play cards (one for pre-ordering, and one from the Full Beard tournament) haven’t appeared on eBay yet, apart from one joker who’s put the pre-order card up for £120.00, hahahaha. Since I bought the box from my FLGS I didn’t get the pre-order card, so if anyone has a spare I’d be interested (but not at a stupid price like that). Same for the Full Beard card, though I expect most people who went to that are fairly keen players so I doubt they’ll ever want to sell, I’m resigned to never getting that.

cornixt:

A lot of people didn’t get their pre-order special play card and GW has no more to give out. I’m sure a lot more similar cards will turn up in a future expansion though since only a few of the CRP cards have been done so far.

Nice that all the team lists are available, and with few changes, although they probably should have taken this chance to get rid of generic Undead to remove the overlap (although Necromantic should have really just been Undead with the Mummies replaced by flesh golems in the first place)

Bitterman
I have seen that. Damn! The seller must be crazy.

I guess it's just a collectors thing because gamewise the card sounds not so special to me. Or am I wrong I don't know the basic rules.

Herby
Yeah, it's not so great. Might come in handy, maybe. Or might not. Meh. Most of the cards are like that, they introduce variability and unpredictability, rather than notably increase one side's power. (And since both players draw from the same deck, you don't get any advantage over an opponent if you own the card and they don't anyway). In this particular case probably especially useful for someone with a Special Weapon who'll get sent off after the first drive anyway (Dwarf Deathroller with Pro? Handy!) but otherwise the downside compensates for the upside.

So, yeah, I'd like to get it for collection reasons, but not very upset if I don't. That guy wanting £120...

tjub:

I like the changes so far! Though totally agree on the need for a day one errata, wtf…? Well, learning by loosing I guess. Looking forward to DZ2 and the new models.

Loidrial:

My personal problem with this game so far is that i have here (and i’m painting them just now) the old box, the one made in…95? So yeah, smaller field and templates and all, but i dont care, what i was looking for was some pdf or anything about the 2 new rulebooks because i have no other way to see what is different from my 3rd edition.

I could even spend 20 euro for the deathzone, but that will give me only the extra teams, the core rules are in a box of 85 euros that i dont need ad all because i already have all my old fashoned one here.

So, i dont even know if i can just openly as for some pdf here, in case i apologize.

But is it possible to have one? XD

Bitterman:

Bearing in mind that CRP wasn’t quite identical to the 3rd Ed boxed set…

Admiral:

Forgeworld has released two referees for Blood Bowl. I hope this means FW will take care of all the interesting side extras in resin, while GW concentrate on plastics as is their new specialization.

The first Halfling seen in miniature since those bagged by the plastic Giant, if I remember correctly. Not ball enough, but the baguette is neat. And the Goblin is flipping a coin while having bribes in his back pocket and bag!

You can get both books as ebooks as well. Or try shops like ex Tritex Games: https://www.tritex-games.co.uk/product/games-workshop-blood-bowl-new-2016-rulebook/ ;)

Loidrial:

Because it is still related to Blood Bowl, GW released this pdf on their site basically saying that the other teams that are not yet in the new rulebook are still valid:
https://www.bloodbowl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/DZ-contents.pdf

Really important stuff imho, because the roster is still as wide as before.

Thats from Death Zone... But yes all teams are still "in the rules" take a look in the teams of legends pdf. Anyway, if you play at home use whatever teams you prefer and if you are interested in tournaments around the world have a look at the NAF for info.

Herby:

Xmas will bring me the latest Blood Bowl box. And I already orderd a second Human team.

I will design the two Human teams like the two teams in the movie: Lo chiamavano Bulldozer. Bud Spencer: Bulldozer and Raimund Harmstorf: Serg. Kempfer for the win!

When I have finished the two Human teams an d the Orc team I’ll go for the Greebo Chaos Dwarf team.

Expect a new blog coming up after Christmas.

:hat off

Im not thrilled about the new scale but then there were alot of 32mm alternative manufacturers before which I didn’t like as well so no harm done. Wonderful to see Blood Bowl live and kicking again… Loved the game for 15 years, but GW picking yup suport for it again has really revitalized it around here!

Superb tshirt as well, guess they won’t be available online?
