[Archive] Blunderbuss V plate armour

Grimstonefire:

I saw an interesting demonstration of a blunderbuss V plate armour as part of the Deadliest Warrior series. Anyone else see this?

It was a guy shooting a pirate blunderbuss against plate armour. I forget how many BB’s/ metal balls didn’t pierce it and only dented, but only one managed to pierce it and get a kill shot. Imo the blunderbuss would only be really effective at extreme close range or at a straight shot, I think glancing hits at medium-long range would be ineffective against plate armour (not even including a shield)

Now bearing in mind this was a small blunderbuss compared to the CD ones, but it looked to be at a fairly close range, I think the CD ones could still do some damage fluffwise to those in plate armour (the likes of Bretonnians and chaos warriors).

Not really that interesting I guess.

SteveM:

I think it is an interesting test and I like weapons to work in game in a fairly realistic manner.  As the BB rules stand in RH they are very simplified and not all that realistic, the 5th edition rules were more involved and allowed focus fire, something RH really should have included.  Some might call it a nerf, but I wouldn’t mind if GW released new rules and as part of them the BB was -1 strength over half range or maybe just armour piercing at close range.

Thanks for the reality check.

Kera foehunter:

lol that show is great fun, despite the inaccuracies :)

Regarding BBs, I think a whole unit firing them would be horrifyingly effective. Just the sheer amount of shrapnel and the noise...

Kera foehunter:

Yes i seen that one to pirates rule!! well Baggroor it tv it has to have something to keep you watching

This.

I've not actually seen it but my Viking re-enactment group had a massive whinge and chin-wag about the horrible line ups of this show and what fought what et al.

A Blunderbuss verses a guy in plate. Yeah, okay that's cool, but evolving technologies and responses in other technologies puts things completely out of context. Stick a Viking in modern day armour, give him a light weight polymer riot shield and he'd rip the absolute crap outta most soldiers today once he closed. Meh.

What era was the plate guy from? Were the common armours at the time historically speaking plate or did the masses run around in gambesons et al instead? If so, a blunderbuss verses the padded armoured masses would be a better comparison...

Baggronor:

Yeah, the show is fun but cannot, in any way, be taken to mean anything.

Firstly, weapons and armour evolve depending on who you fight against, the resources you have available and the environment and climate you find yourself in. Thus, a contest between a knight and a samurai for example, is totally meaningless because one is using weapons and armour designed for use on the battlefields of Europe against European enemies, and the other is using equipment meant for use in the far east against Koreans/Chinese/other Samurai in a totally different climate (full plate in the far eastern summer would not be wise :)).

And all that before you even consider the total lack of consideration given to what era the warriors were from. There is a big difference between a Norman knight and a later one in full plate, but they’re both ‘knights’.

If they compare warriors with no regard to era and specialisation, then they may as well put in a modern soldier with a machine gun

Border Reiver:

They did, although to be fair the comparison was Spetnaz v Green Beret, and Taliban v IRA. The series was fun to watch, and yes the match ups were completely un realistic (lets face it when would a Spartan hoplite and a ninja ever go up against each other - outside of a WAB Tourney). If I remember the series right, the final result for viking v. samurai was 518 wins for the samurai and 482 fir the viking.

Baggronor:

lol the very fact ninjas were included should indicate the level of seriousness. Surely it should have been a two horse race between the Ninja and the Pirate!

In Frank Miller comics which subsequently get made into films?
