[Archive] boyfights' frostgrave in the dark lands! troll test run [6-18-19]

tjub:

Looks good, have you got all the warbands? I bought Underworlds, but never actually played it more than 2-3 times. So sold it off again. Didnt really have the extra “game slot” avaliable.

Anyway, regarding Tjublings etc. For resin or metal miniatures I recommend washing them before painting. Dish washing soap and a toothbrush usually works fine to remove any leftovers from the release agent.

Admiral:

Really nice! Count me as a fan of the Gobbos and Squigs.

Jasko:

Ahhhhhh, so nice to see those glorious Gitz! I actually also have just assembled the warband, great models.

I like you red cloaks very much, works really well with the green (obviously) and also the pale white-ish color of the squigs and mushrooms. I’d say the test for your Chaos Dwarfs / Tjublings worked well! :hat off

Uther the unhinged:

Lovely Gitz. The red looks really nice and I always loved the minis.

Nicodemus:

So much painted goodness going on in this thread!!

boyfights:

Wow, so many nice comments, thanks very much everybody!

@tjub So far I have all of the Shadespire set and the first half of Nightvault, once Eyes of the Nine are done I’ll have it all painted up. I could totally see preferring proper wargames to Underworlds, it’s definitely a different sort of game. For me, I’m just counting my blessings that my wife enjoys playing it once in a while because that’s more than I could hope for with a real wargame  They’re nice little self-contained painting projects too that let me get a taste of painting all kinds of stuff without feeling like I need to buy more to play with, and if I do end up really enjoying painting something I can always build on them and play with them in AoS! Or hopefully Warcry because that looks more interesting

@Jasko Very cool, I’m sure you’ll enjoy painting them too! I hope your set has less mold lines than mine did though, yeesh :frowning: Do you play Underworlds too?

Jasko:

boyfights
Oh I'm sure I will, fantastic models. Amazing what they can do these days with snap-fit models. Mold lines were definitely there, basically one fine line around each model. I still have to fill a few tiny gaps with green stuff, especially since I base them on square bases and they were designed for these special bases. But no biggy. I don't play anthing (yet?) from the new ecosystem. But I got myself the Looncurse box (my gaming buddy plays Wood Elfs, what are the chances?) and some other new Gloomspite models to add to my classic Warhammer Night Goblins army. I really like that basically all models are completely backwards compatible! (excluding these kinda weird snuffling guys...). And then somehow I could also really use Zarbag's Gitz (I literally needed three Archers, one fanatic, one hero in armour, two squigs and one squig handler. And can you ever have enough wizards? Plus the models are so gorgeous) I also got the Loonshrine as a great terrain piece. But then I also realized that I have both an Underworlds gang ready as well as quite a large genuine AoS army (as opposed to just continue using classic Warhammer armies with the warscrolls) now. I don't really know how sizing an army works in AoS, but it's something like 3,5k in old Warhammer points. So who knows? Maybe I'll join the AoS community after all. At least I could convince my buddy to try out Looncurse as a summer challenge. We will both build and paint the models and then play the scenario.

boyfights:

Very jealous that you got a copy of Looncurse! I don’t normally go for good guys and especially not for anything resembling an elf but I love the look of most of the Sylvaneth stuff and that was a very tempting box. Is it my imagination or are the newer night goblins a lot smaller than the old ones?

I’m really tempted to grab another box of gobbos or squigs to paint some more after I get through the next batch of Underworlds guys but I think I want to wait and see how Warcry looks, I’d be pretty happy playing goblins in that too  Some of the new Chaos models are looking really cool as well!

Yes so me and my buddy decided that the box would be good for us, but at that point is was already sold out at both GW and our regular 3rd-party supplier (damn, would have been 100euros there, an incredible bargain!), but we managed to snatch one on eBay from another supplier, so we did not have to support some scalper. A really great deal! And yes, the current range of Night Goblins is smaller than the last iteration, like my Archers and the fanatics. Initially I had the current Night Goblins with spears mixed with old ones, but it just looked horrible, the older grots are half a head taller and also have a pretty different style. So I converted them to archers, I don't mind the difference between different units...
Warcry indeed looks quite promising! I didn't yet really understand if there basically are only different Chaos factions present there or if it will be a system where any faction can participate. If it should not be to your liking in the end, there are always more grots and squigs to be found :hat off

Fuggit Khan:

I’m just gonna have to piggyback on everyone else’s comments already posted…great stuff!

:hashut

boyfights:

Glad to hear you got a good deal, they’re not always easy to come by with GW stuff! That’s kind of a bummer that the goblins are smaller though, they look great but it makes the price point seem even more egregious :frowning: Definitely one I’ll be waiting on a “start collecting” box for if I end up getting there. I need to focus on getting through these tjublings first anyway, I think I counted about 65 including dogs and that’s before the Kickstarter :o

It looks like there will be a number of other factions involved from something I read that I only kind of vaguely remember but I think it hinted at goblins, skaven, sigmarines (naturally) and another three or four as well as the five or six chaos warbands that have been announced. My biggest (yet still faint) hope is that GW is seeing the push for solo options in tabletop games and includes some sort of automa system, it would be an instant preorder for me  They did it for Quest and Blackstone Fortress so it’s not totally impossible!

Well to be clear, so the three grots with bows from Zarbag's Gitz, that is the current height of goblins and has been for the last years, at laest the regular multi-part plastic regiment kit with spears, bows and hand weapons. They are all the same height.
Yeah I also don't understand why GW went for this limited edition approach. They could have sold many more boxes of looncurse, why piss off so many of your customers? I don't get it.

That sounds good about Warcry! I think it's supposed to be similar to Kill Team, and I hear that is great fun. Plus it has the first evil dwarf by GW in ages! Fingers crossed.

Jasko
Oh wow, so they've been small for quite a while then I guess :) My old original multipart ones with the split waists seem to be almost a head taller! I don't think I have one here but next time I visit my mom I'll dig one out of the old collection to compare. The limited release thing doesn't make much sense to me either, I can see it with something like Kill Team where it's just *that* good of a deal but for just a regular box of minis? I don't get it :(

I finished up the Eyes of the Nine! I'm 90% stoked with how they turned out but I wish I had gone with something besides yellow because I just don't think it meshes well with the rest. I wanted to do white flames for the daemons to tie them in with the rest of the warband but I hate the way it looks with the yellow daemon :( I was really tempted to try a red wash over the hands and down the wrists a little bit to try and break it up, but it took like 7 coats of yellow just to get it to the point where I didn't want to dumpster the whole project and really didn't like the idea of redoing him so I'm calling it a day :P

The Tzaangor drives me crazy too, I think if I had leaned into the blue more instead of highlighting towards grey it might have come out a little better and I tried to get more blue in there with the belt feathers and I just think the whole thing looks weird, blahhh. Whatever, they're all done and I can throw all my yellow in the trash and pretend it's not a colour from now on! :hat off

Next up: Tjublings on the march! It's about time!

Uther the unhinged:

Oh I liked the Tzaangor. But I am with you on yellow.

tjub:

Yellow can be a really tricky color… I prefer to go with GWs Averland Sunset, Yellow wash whatever its called, Averland Sunset, some brighter yellow/bleached bone as high light.

boyfights:

@Uther Thanks, he’s my favourite too  And I think the one where the yellow bugs me the most after the daemon, because I’m really happy with how the rest of him turned out and then there’s just these awful mismatched sections haha, ahh well. He didn’t photograph well (all of these were awkward to get good shots of actually, I’m finding that with a lot of the AoS-style poses, maybe it’s just my bad old camera) but I blended the blue on the wizard’s wing out to purple and I think it makes the yellow look a bit less awkward, maybe I should try giving those feathers on the tzaangor a purple highlight before I seal them up…

@tjub I wish I had been able to get away with so few coats! Of course it didn’t help anything that I had no white primer or patience to wait for some to arrive, so yellow and white over black it is  If I remember right I went with (all Vallejo) 3x coats of Deep Yellow, Sepia Wash in the recesses, panic because it looks like a disaster and remind yourself never to try this again until you get yellow wash, 2x more coats Deep Yellow and finally some Light Yellow to make it pop :hat off I think a different shade of yellow might have worked better too but my palette is pretty limited in terms of non-green colours, I really need to buy some more!

Jasko:

Ugh, yellow is so hard to get done properly. But I think you managed quite well! But yeah, without white undercoat it’s reaaaaally tough. I think it’s the color I use the least, and for good reason :stuck_out_tongue:

Overall very nice models! I like that dark fleshtone you’ve done, fits very well with the grey-ish colors, I think light skin could have easily turn out too pale.

boyfights:

Thanks Jasko! Truth be told I’m pretty happy with how the yellow turned out in a vacuum and I think it worked well on the acolytes, but the yellow/white daemon looks unfinished to me and I think the yellow looks totally out of place on the tzaangor, of all of them I’m the most tempted to just paint over his but I want them to look unified so I’ll just deal with it I guess. Maybe the varnish will help make it look a little less strange if I’m lucky but I’m not gonna get my hopes up

Thanks on the skintone too, I’ve only ever tried darker skin once on a bearded stormcast so most of a body was a new challenge. I’ll definitely be keeping the recipe from the female acolyte, I think the highlights were a little too harsh on the male one but it got better with a final wash. I’m getting a ton of mileage out of my washes lately, they’re really helping me to extend my palette and I’m for sure going to be buying more of them. It sounds funny but experimenting with them is making me feel more like i’m “painting” rather than “painting a (miniature/squad x)”, like the difference between cooking vs following a recipe, or speaking a language vs knowing a few canned phrases. It’s been very rewarding, I’m having a lot of fun playing around!

boyfights:

Tjublings on the march!

A little bit sloppy because I literally fell asleep a bunch of times while painting them, but I’m happy with the colour scheme so full speed ahead!

tjub:

Cool, assemble you legions!
