[Archive] Bringing 1001 points to a 1000 point battle, okay?

MadHatter:

Hey

I’m wondering, is it generally okay to bring 1001 points to a 1000 point battle? Say one lands on 996 points and really wants to field the Ironcurse Icon aswell?

Best regards,

MadHatter

Zorn:

Personnally, it depends on the competitor. I played some tournaments (in France, but I think it is the same everywhere) where a +/-5pts was tolerated and some where you can’t exceed the defined value. For no tournament battle it is not a problem for wich I applied approximately a +/-Xpts, X is the value of the cheapest mini (for example 3pts for a skaven army with giant rats, 6pts for a warrior of chaos with chaos hounds etc…).

It's non-competative, it's just with a new crowd and I don't want to make a bad impression!

I'll try not to worry to much about it then! Thanks! :hat off

Bloodbeard:

In my group it was okay to go over with some points back in the day. But now i never go above, it feels like cheating to me.

So now i drop a pistol, change to a cheaper banner or something. The moral victory lies in going just below the allowed points.

Ask the guys you’re gonna play with.

Yodrin:

In my grope, we stay inside. Go over by 1 or 2 points, when you can go under by 5?

Dînadan:

My personal opinion is no you can’t. It’s a points limit for a reason, not a points guidline.

The way I see it is your points are basically ‘money’ you have to spend on your army - if you were buying something in a shop and had only say £100 on you, you could spend £98 or £99, but you couldn’t spend £101. (It’s not a perfect analogy as money, unlike points is transferable - you can use excess money to buy from somewhere else, but you can use unused points in another game lol).

And to pre-emptively counter the argument “but it’s only 1 point!” Yes it is only one point, but so is 2002 compared to 2001, and so is 2003 to 2002. And so is 2004 to 2003. So by logical extension, it shouldn’t matter if you bring a 3000pts army to a 2000pts game. Which, I’m sure we can all agree, is total minotaur droppings :stuck_out_tongue:

Another counter is that 1 point could be the difference between say a 25 man unit of basic warriors and a min sized elite unit whose special rules are highly effective against the opposing army and thus will do better against them than the 25 man unit and thus that single point could have a disproportionate effect on the game.

Admiral:

No, then you can cut five points or so instead. If it is a special list with strange combos or whatnot you’re really keen to try out in a home match, but can’t get beneath 1001, then your opponent might agree to the 1001 limit instead of 1000 points, and perhaps pick something himself to reach 1001.

On this topic, my brother once fielded one High Elf Spearman too many on a tournament. We discovered the mistake after counting the results of his first battle, and told the tournament arrangers about it. We asked them if he should remove that Elf.

They asked what the results of the first game was, and when we told them my brother had got completely massacred they let him keep that one Spearman. Clearly, such mistakes may sometimes be accepted as crutches for a handicapped list. :cheers

snowblizz:

Absolutely not. Friendly or tournament doesn’t matter. If you want to bring 1001p you agree to it beforehand.

It totally sucks to not get last thing but so it did for me but I made the effort to change my list.

Noooooooooooooope

This message was automatically appended because it was too short.

Bolg:

Its actually in the rules. No you cant, and no you should not

Part of the sport is bringing a legal working army to a game. if my opponent fields 1001, I want 1001 points too friendly or otherwise. ist the differance of taking that mucisian in a unit or not and that we all know can be game changing.

Its just like you need 25% core in any game, not 24% nor 24.5%.

cornixt:

The points limit is a hard limit. If you allow people to go over then it isn’t really a limit. If you really want to include X but don’t have enough points then you are going to have to drop something else somewhere. Nearly everyone ends up a few points short, but if I knew in advance that it was a 1005pt game (it’s an arbitrary amount, but just as I don’t want the limit to be exactly the same as your slightly over number, I don’t expect you to come down to my 996pt army value) then I might tweak my list to take advantage.

Yodrin:

@ Madhatter, seems like the advice is not to go over the limit - hahaha

Haha yes indeed!

Thank you all for your opinion :hat off I will revise the armylist and make sure to not make a fool out of myself!
