[Archive] Bringing back the 80's - ToM's blog

Time of Madness:

As a child in the 80’s I was drawn to Warhammer and spent my money (mostly my parents money) on tiny warhammer figures. Some of my favourite models included a handful of chaos dwarfs I purchased from the marauder line which I have long since sold. Over the years I kept coming back to chaos dwarfs putting together a couple of different “big hat” era armies and even a FW army.

Since the release of Tamurkhan I’ve wanted to go back to the 80’s chaos dwarfs and put together an entire army of them using the current rule set.

THE PLAN

- I’ve made some purchases and thrown together a quick 2000pt list. Here’s the breakdown of the models I plan on using.

- Sorcerer Prophet (Marauder Mage)

- BSB (some form of conversion most likely using a model from the renegades box set)

- 28 Infernal Guard with shields (majority will be marauder chaos dwarfs with some citadel ones mixed in for variety)

- 10 or so fireglaives (chaos dwarfs with x-bow)

- 4 Centaurs (mix of tenderisers and whirlwinds)

- 2 Magman cannons (mortars with crew)

- Iron Daemon (juggernaut)

Models I have so far include

- 23 marauder dwarfs (each variant - missing marauder mage)

- Khazek Doomlord

- Juggernaut

Stay tuned for some pictures tomorrow as I dive head first into this project.

Time of Madness

Threadbare:

Looking forward to this blog. These are my favorite Chaos Dwarfs so seeing them never gets old, especially since i have an army them that I hope to paint one day.

Don’t forget clams Dvergar they fit right in and he has a BSB.

tjub:

Sounds like a great but expensive idea!

TheHoodedMan:

An absolutely great longterm idea. Keep going!

Doombeard:

If you want some kickass Wolfriders or Khans check out Bob Ollies Samurai Wolfriders they fit in perfectly with MM90’s.

I’m hoping to get a set one day too to go with my 80’s stuff.

Available to buy a set of 10 for about £40 I think. I reckon GW stole their Mongol idea from those.

I think the riders would fit on 90’s wolves too if you wanted to swap them out.

Bloodbeard:

I’m looking foward to following this blog ToM. What plans do you have for command groups and heroes? Will you convert old miniatures? Or use some new “old style” alternatives? I think Clam’s fit the style best.

Admiral:

Very nice concept! Best of luck.

Time of Madness:

Thanks for all the comments folks! I’m planning on trying to keep the army (at least to start off) all GW models.

I’ll be converting a musician/standard and my bsb using the old models.

I’ve decided to use Base X of War Thunder Mountain bases as I’ve done my last 3 armies with reisn bases/trays.

Here’s the first 19 marauder cd’s up with Khazek. They have been cleaned up and mounted on bases awaiting priming.

Admiral:

Now this will be nice.

Yodrin:

I will follow this blog for sure:)

Time of Madness:

Quick one hour paint job testing out some colours. Went with Red armour, which I think I’ll have to define a bit more on the edges with some edge hi-lights. I did the beard/hair/fur all the same colour. Not sure yet what I’m going to do with the beards. I may stick with darker beards with brighter red armour. Still undecided what I’m going to do with the bases. Overall got a feel for the model and some of the colours that I may end up using. This guy will be off for a bath before I strip him and start over.

More to come!

Quick shot of the jugger (aka iron daemon)!

Ben Saunders:

That’s just a one hour paint job? Jeez. I mean, it’s not Golden Demon, but it’s probably better than anything I can manage. Agree that the beard should probably be darker though, just not sure how that will go with the armour.

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

Dam nice. I love the red armour. My first ever minis were also the evil dwarfs… so wish i kept them  this blog will be great!

Time of Madness:

Thanks for the comments. I think I’m going to extend the red onto his hands/arms rather then going with the leather look.

Does anyone have some suggestions for shields? I’m tempted to locate some oop marauder ones from the late 80’s and early 90’s, but I’m also tempted to go with some never style shields (or decals) to make them a bit more modern.

What beard colours should I go with? Anyone have some beard colour suggestions with the new GW paints?

Kera foehunter:

Its great to see such a great army. keep it up loving it tom

MadHatter:

This is one to follow  great old-school stuff here, my story is very similar but I started in the 90s with Beastmen. Looks awesome so far :cheers

Pyro Stick:

This is going to be cool. There are way too few completed 3rd edition armies around. Are you going to go for one of each of the MM90’s? Cant wait to see the juggernaut painted up.

For shields i pretty much went with whatever small shields i could find. I used a mix of old marauder, chaos marauder, and undead shields. Didnt really look that coherent so if i did them again i would chose one style and go with it.

Bloodbeard:

I’ve got a hold of 10 shields from Russian Alternative. Those look great with my little unit of 3rd edition minatures. The shields habe a lot of character and sticking plastic to metal feels wrong.

Time of Madness:

The good thing is I only need around 16 shields. I may just take the costly plunge of buying some old ones off ebay.

Here’s a quick update on the colour scheme. I’ve decided to keep the red armour and do various beard colours. These 2 are not done yet, but getting closer to the way I’d like them to look. Please forgive the very dark picture, I’ll get outside sometime this week and take some decent ones.
