[Archive] Building a God-Machine (help needed)

Necrotique:

I fully intend to have a completed Warlord Titan for my Mechanicus army for use in my Apocalypse games by the end of the month. I have done all the technical drawings and started the skeleton but need advice on what to use for the materials. I was going to do foamboard with plasticard over the top for stability but was wondering what you guys’ experience with foamboard is like - does it melt/break easily when dropped?
For those that have read the Titan series, it’ll be modelled on the Warlord Imperius Dicatio
:cheers

Baggronor:

Hmmm. I’m only ever used foamboard for mounting artwork. Its fairly sturdy if you use the thick stuff, but I dunno if its ideal.

I would try and find things that are the right shape to use for certain parts - like if you needed curved armour for the shins, I would look at cutting up plastic garden pots/buckets to get the curved surface. Plastic pipes and pipe joints can make good weapon parts, old telephone wire could become plasma coils, etc.

Necrotique:

So far in my plans the main body would be foamboard. The rest would be polysterene cut using CnC machinery reinforced with a wooden skeleton.

Does that sound stable enough? I’m really still playing around with ideas here and I’ll probably use old items such as telephone wires, cables, etc for the interior and pistons.

For the love of me I can’t remember what the people I’ve seen doing this used. Some kind of skeleton, wooden dowelling maybe and then foam-board sounds awfully familiar.

Have you tried doing a search for it? I would expect the people who have attempted this have posted some stuff online. Because I recall having seen some of it.

As an aside, there are a bunch of “papercraft” (though most build in plasticard or foamboard for Warhammer stuff I think) lists on Yahoo with plans and stuff for just this kinda thing.

Abecedar:

saw an effort somewhere, the bloke used a foam core, with dowels for strength and paper mash to cover and build the basic frame.

Niibl:

Foamboard is good for this purpose especially if you plate the outer surfaces with polystyrene.

You have to build internal braces though. Lego/duplo blocks are good for right angles but you could also use foamboard.

If you want something sturdier (but also heavier) you could turn to stuff like Dibond.

Please note, if you drop your titan it will get damaged, regardless of the material. Just DON’T.

Necrotique:

Well, my titan is nearly completed and all that’s left to do is add detail and paint it up, so pictures will be up sometime soon (though it will be an ongoing project to be honest)
