[Archive] Bull Centaurs from Dragon Ogres?

Ishkur Cinderhat:

As all our fledgling armies are in dire need of some hoofed, hard-hitting killer units, I figured I might throw in my idea of how to create Bull-Centaurs.

Recently it struck me how similar the features of the Dragon Ogres look to what makes the Chaos Dwarfs so special: they have big noses, and long tusks but other than that their torso seems pretty humanoid.

Now, as the old Bull Centaur models already resembled Chaos Dwarfs that have considerably increased in size, why don’t we take it a step further and make true behemoths out of them. I think the body could be based on the regular plastic horse, with some GS added to make it a bit bulkier and the tail exchanged against something more bull-like.

The conversion of the Dragon Ogre body might look something like that (this is the hat-style - a mask conversion might work just as well):

There are some advantages to this:

1) the final miniature is slightly cheaper than the original bull centaur model

2) these are available both with great weapons and two hand weapons

3) they already have quite some Chaos-styled decoration on them

The most obvious disadvantages that come to my mind are:

1) they require a lot of GS work, both on the torso and on the horse/bull body

2) they are still quite expensive

Of course this is just a theory, and it’s not verified yet if the dragon ogre torso actually fits on the plastic horse.

What do you think? Let me know!

ack! Just saw the typo in the image, sry

Nemo:

I like the idea.

If you use Empire horses they would look good as they have a nice metal barding that looks very CD like.

However as the Dragon Ogres are quite large you could count them as Ironguts if they did not fit onto regular calvary bases.

Anyway I say go for it, if anyone can do it, it’s you.

:cheers

Xander:

You could also use that same horse body Bjorni used, the Khorne champion one. That would look pretty cool. While I think it would look cool, the size would be quite large.

minty:

Umm, the dragon ogre body is to big for a horse unless the horse has super eaten and put on weight, and for the bull body, I tried for my chaos champion

you could use the khonre horse but they’d be a bi squashed on cavalry bases

torn:

i think the body will pit nicely onto the horse if the torso is bulked out to be bull like. it should only need a couple mm on either side, and the legs beefed up.

Khan!:

Definitely a cool idea, but I’m not sure about the logistics… It would definitely take a lot of GS to get the proportions of the horse bit right. As bull centaurs are now, I also think that these ones might end up being too big, like ogre-base big - but actually I think it would be very cool if bull centaurs ended up officially that large in the end, so I dunno…

Ishkur Cinderhat:

Well, I’ll probably just have to try it out one day to see if it works! :cheers

Snotling:

hm… i don’t know if it works, for BCs, i want to see dwarfs on bulls, not orges on horses.

but on the other hand, you are… the man! and i think, when you try it, it will look good. so… do it, let’s see how it will look ^^

Hashut’s Blessing:

If you want to try it, try it. I’d like to see the results. Also, stick them on 40mm bases and say that each on is two BC (or 500mm bases are better actually), since the model would be on the right size base and it’d be big enough to represent it…

gORCUS:

Take one of the torsos and stick it on Archeon’s steed or a great stag, I think they’d be about right, and it would look much more BCish. You are right though, the faces are almost perfect, just needing the beard and hat.

Hashash:

I had a vision, did you think of something like this?

Bull centaur

Xander:

Hehe, that’s what I described Hashash.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

Nah I don’t want them on 40mm monster bases, they are supposed to be cavalry after all! I might have to think of something else instead.

Ghrask Dragh:

Yes a comprimise is best I think. As much as I like the original models the bull bodies are way too small! The dragon Ogre faces would look great with CD beards and hats though good spot!! but they would be too big, I shall think on this and hopefully come up with an idea before the 2009 army book and new models

Ishkur Cinderhat:

OK I count on you. ^^

thomson:

my frend just gave me a whole lot of Bretonnian horses, so this might do the trick
