I picked up a couple of more commissions, so I’ll be doing Dark Elves now for sure. Which is fine by me, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on some of the bits for the Slaanesh contingent of my Warriors army. I also took part in a 3 round tournament at my local gaming shop, a rare treat as I got to play three locals that I’ve NEVER gotten to play before. Here’s my write up of the event:
I also officially sold off my Chaos Dwarfs, it pains me less than you might think to say that. As I needed the money, and really I’ve been holding off on finishing them for months because I really wanted to change the color scheme entirely. This gives me a chance to start fresh. But for now, it’s time to focus on finishing the Mounted Hero and get back to work on the Trollbloods, I want to have them all assembled this week and ready for primer. As soon as there’s a clear, warm day I’ll take them out and mass prime everything in the garage. But I’m not going to botch the finish just so I can get to work on the rest. Meanwhile, I can go back and touch up the ones I’ve already done - so expect to see some updates very soon.
A little more work on the Hero this morning, I decided to go with a sort of glow on the weapon, I also decided to reposition the rear legs on the mount for a more natural/dynamic pose. I’m not totally happy with the rider’s pose, but I’m apprehensive about changing it at this point. Still a bit of work to go on this one, but he’s taking shape. Let me know what you think.
Tried to get a close up of the details on the buboes and the carapace markings, ended up a bit blurry.
He’s nearly finished, I’ve tried a bit of wet blending on the large buboes, and ended up very happy with the results so I’m sure I’ll be trying more of that in the future. Normally I do my blending with my airbrush, but for some things, it just makes more sense to do it the old fashioned way. Enjoy!
I want to get the Daemons painted this year, that’s my goal. This guy is giving me a chance to test some colors for the Plaguebearers, etc. Let me know what you think.
Here’s Epidemius, he’s basically finished but I’ve still got some work on his base and some gribbly bits to add. Overall though I’m pretty happy with him. This actually made me anxious to get my hands on the Tamurkhan and Kazyk the Befouled models a lot more.
On second thought, I might freehand something on the banner while I’m at it. Anyhow, enjoy and let me know what you think.
I’ve got about 113 models primed and with their first layers drying right now, while those dry I turned my attention to my Warriors . I’ve changed them to a 5x4 setup with 3 heroes, this pushes Festus to the second rank and gives me some extra flexibility in the magic phase . I’ve also started the freehand work on the warrior armor, I’ve got 80 of these now so it may take a while to finish … But fun to come back occasionally so I’m not painting the same thing over and over. I’ll be starting on a dark elf army this weekend too, so lots to do! Should have some pics of the Trollbloods next week.
Also, I’ve started mocking up 7 display boards I’ll be doing for upcoming commissions. Anyhow, here’s how the warriors look with the freehand, sadly it’s mostly covered up when they have basically any weapons equipped, but it’s the thought that counts right?
I’ll have my Death Sorcerer converted an painted soonish.
I’ve been doing a little work on Ogres, I plan to play them on their own but am painting them to match my Warriors for the obvious reasons. Here’s the Musician for my Ironguts.
And work continues on the Trollbloods commission…
And speaking of commissions, today is Boxing Day for me. I’ve got a Dark Elf army to clip and sort here. This is for a local client and new player, I’m hoping to have him finished up by the end of March.
I also got some goodies for myself, I plan to turn the shrine into a Slaughtermaster and Butcher for my Ogres. I’ll be using Nurglings to carry the Shrine.
Since I’m hosting my first 3 round tournament next weekend at the shop, I’ve got a few things to put together and paint this week. For starters, there’s the Warhounds. These are the “Familiars” everyone who attends the tourney are issued, they’re basically Sabretusks that gain some bonuses in each round of the event. But between you and me, they’re also a great excuse for me to unload a chunk of the Warhounds that are cluttering up my bits box. Every time I buy a Chaos lot on eBay I end up with 10-20 more of these things, and I use hounds of Xaphan in place of Hounds anyway. So… I’ve got a lot of these to “give away”.
Also I’m making a trophy for the first place winner. There will be 12 guys (including myself) at the tournament so I’m seriously considering making 12 and writing Participant Award on all of them. But that just sounds like more work than it’s worth at this point. Maybe next time…
Anyhow, here’s what I’ve got so far. I’ll also be doing another Chaos Sorcerer on foot and a couple of Chaos Chariots, probably some more Chaos Ogres. And of course more Trollbloods. Busy busy busy week.
Tomorrow I’ve got to meet with the Dark Elf client for some monies and the last of the minis, then hopefully I can finish this stuff up for the tourney next weekend and get back to work on the commissions.
My wife was sick last week with the flu, and I caught a serious upper respiratory infection (always a concern since I’ve broken my ribs a few times). But I decided I felt good enough to finish the trophy today, or at least try. I would’ve liked to have had more time to focus on it, but it is what it is. Tournament is Saturday, so someone’s getting it - one way or another. This honestly will probably be the only hobby thing I do all week, painting this left me literally exhausted. After a nap and another round of meds I’m tucked in and preparing for a marathon of Vikings so I can get caught up. Enjoy!
@turbotomte - I use a mixture of Tamaya Clear Red and Army Painter Dark Tone ink or a purple ink from Secret Weapon depending on where the blood is from. For gribbly bits I mix it with some Uhu Glue and tease it with a toothpick to make it stringy.

These will eventually be Nurgle Chariots, for now I just needed them playable for some testing with my list. This weekend will probably be my last 2500 point game for a while, then it’s going to be 2200 points getting ready for Rock Wars.
Chaos Sorcerer on Foot with a Skull of Katam:
And here’s a detail shot of the “plate” from the trophy, made with a piece of a plastic Garage Sale sign. I painted it with a Metallic, then Typhus Corrosion with a little water added at the side to get it down to the metal. Then rubbed some weathering pigment on to add a little variation on the color.
So yeah, not a lot to show. But the good news is, I’m not nearly as sick as I have been. I’m no longer contagious, and I’ve got a lot of work to do. Expect some new things to show up here next week. Including details from the tournament this weekend…
Thanks Bloodbeard, I’ll be doing a weathering demo soon for locals. I’m hoping to start doing some videos on youtube soon, starting with Rust and Gore, as those are the two I’m asked most often about.
We had to reschedule the tournament, I’m kinda glad honestly I am still getting over the funk. I’m much better, but I’m still working on expelling the infection. With upcoming events we’ve rescheduled for April 12th. Once it’s finished we’ll be doing 2200 list challenges and the giant battle this summer (I really need to get my army ready for that).
Since we’re definitely going to have more people at the event now, I’ve decided to make another trophy (one for runner up and one for the winner). Might even have a couple of prizes, I’ve got an idea on that front.
Today I think is the first day in a week that I’ve felt “normal”. Though I’ve been on the mend for several days, I hate upper respiratory infections. This one was particularly rough.
In other news, I’ve been contacted about doing terrain for a fairly large tournament. Additionally, I’ve been contacted by several other TOs looking to add terrain for their own events, so really a big opportunity for me and my burgeoning commission business. With so many projects on the books, and now BIG projects looming I’ve decided to add another pair of hands. My long time friend and fellow hobbyist Derek will be joining me at the end of the month.
I’ve also started looking at potential sites for a physical location for the business. So, this week I don’t know what’s going to happen. I have some meetings to attend, etc (I’m looking at adding as many as 3 people total to this thing). My wife and I are pretty excited, though it definitely means some weird times ahead.
With that, let me just say I’ll have some pictures to show later today (not a whole lot, but I did manage to paint my Sorcerer with the Skull of Katam). I’ll be putting together a few other things for upcoming tournaments, but personal updates are likely to be few and far between with all of this work on hand. Still, keep an eye out here and on my blog, there’s going to be a lot to see…
