Alright guys! So while I am making a mega ton of great progress right now completely redesigning my bits for Shapeways manufacturing (big news related to that hopefully this weekend) I have turned to another 3D printer manufacturer for the Chaos Dwarf Obelisk (which simply isnt viable on Shapeways).
So some people liked the design, and here it is in the flesh… errr stone… errr… plastic
The details are quite good (for PVA printing at least) and I think appropriate for dark lands weathered stone work, the striping is really very-very shallow, it requires a little cleaning with a blade (which i have not done yet in the photo above - thats exactly what it looks like out of the bag), I am very impressed with the debossed runes and I’m pleasantly surprised that it measures up to a very satisfying size next to a mini. To help judge scale the RA miniature on the left is on a 25mm base, and the classic big hat on the right is on a 20mm base, the obelisk is 100mm tall.
Voodoo specializes in larger scale manufacturing and right now while their summer printing deal is going I can get batches at a reasonable cost. I would be looking to sell these guys for 7.00$ for a single monolith or 11.00$ for two monoliths (plus shipping of course ?" I can also provide a better deal for larger batches listed below).
The Catch: I need to know there’s some real interest in buying some of these pieces before I can afford to invest in ordering even the minimum bulk printing batch, all I need from you guys is to pipe up and let me know if you’re interested and how many you think you would see your self ordering in the near future if I posted them up for sale. If you guys can show me there’s a real good chance of moving at least 15 Obelisks pretty quickly, I could start taking orders right away! I’d need to make it to that within the next three weeks though before their summer sale ends.
This whole thing kinda feels like a bit of a long shot, but thanks regardless guys! At the very least it was an awful lot of fun putting this thing together and having it arrive on my door step :hat off
Other Prices / Shipping Details
larger batch prices:
Four Obelisk ?" 20.00$
Six Obelisk - 27.00$
I would be shipping from the west coast United States (Oregon), They are hollow and very light weight (About 2 ounces as best as I can tell from my food scale) and are very strong, I think they will ship perfectly safely in a bubble envelope which should reduce shipping costs…
US Shipping - 8$
International Shipping - 14.50$
Interest tally to first batch order: 16 / 15 !!! First Batch Confirmed!!!
Cool! At the moment I don’t have any 28mm stuff left except loads of Blood Bowl stuff of course, so unless I get an urge to build a Chaos Dwarf Stadium I don’t be getting any. But best of luck!
Hmm, a Chaos Dwarf Stadium now that I think about it… Not a bad idea at all. Just need to finish a Chaos Dwarf team first.
tjub, you’ll have a 15mm CD army going. Those obelisks will look even more impressive next to your tjublings.
I’ll take 6. Few things warms this tightwad’s heart like big batch savings. I’ll spread the word to Swedish tournament organizing clubs and Chaos Dwarf collectors. They might want to adorn their Dark Lands tabletops.
Any chance you would be wiling to share the .stl file? This looks like something my printer could handle and if i can get to that quality or higher then i could probably provide you with a source of these for a lot cheaper.
Wow Thanks so much everyone for the interest so far! (and extra thanks to Admiral for all the promotion passing along the word!) If anyone else is interested please feel free to chime in!
Pyro Stick and I have been hammering out weather or not it might be a better option for him to produce them (I might be able to cut the price down further assuming it doesn’t sacrifice detail) - I’ll update you guys shortly once we have an answer!
I feel pretty good with the amount of interest I (lol well really Admiral) was able to generate so quickly, and I feel really confident that one way or another I’ll be able to offer the Obelisk for sale soon.
Would definitely take 4, possibly 6. Where abouts are you located in Oregon? I live in Vancouver (WA), could possibly arrange local pick up if you are in PDX?
Edit: Put me down for 6, pending shipping costs, assuming local meet up isn’t possible.
Wow! guys! It looks like we have a solid 36 Obelisks that people have chimed in for saying they are willing to buy! That’s enough to justify grabbing two bulk print batches! The left overs I feel like I could comfortably sell overtime (maybe keep a fair few for my self).
There is one last thing I want to do before I start taking orders is figure out what it would cost me to ship these guys to European customers, all the shipping estimate sites I’ve got to are telling me about 20 bucks! Which it just way too much, I assume all interest in buying them would vanish at those shipping prices, unfortunately my profit margin on these orders is very small so I cant really comp the shipping myself. However I feel like I have shipped small packages in boxes over to you guys across the pond before for cheaper (I distinctly remember like… 15 bucks or so to ship out my Emissaries and that was in boxes), shipping a envelope I think would cut that price even further. So I am going to load up 12 ounces of… I dunno the one obelisk (and some dice probably to mimic the weight of 5 more) and take it to the post office to get a exact estimate of the shipping cost to all you guys.
Thanks everyone so much for your interesting and support! I’m looking forward to using this as a stepping stone to some bigger terrain projects (I have general outlines to eventually do an Alter, a Small Ziggurat, and a “full” Ziggurat).
:hat off :hat off :hat off :hat off :hat off :hat off
could you print it out as 4 sides and a base or even print each side in half sections to give you (8 side pieces a base and 4 top bits) so you could place them flat in an envelope to make postage cheap and give you more room to move with world shipping and profit - just an idea
Postage is always a pain, but your batch saving should make it worth it. Best of luck finding an endurable cheapskate solution! That’s always what I try to do with smaller packages, but for larger orders I’m afraid I’m likely to have to revert to standard boxes with high shipping.
Alright I have things hammered out: Flat shipping inside the United States will be 8$. European orders are 14.50$ My fellow Cascadians who can make it to Guardian Games in Portland (or Rainy Day Games in Aloha) I would happily meet you their for no charge at all on a mutually convenient Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
If everyone who is still interested in a run of them would be kind enough as the chime in again and let me know, I’ll start the tally over again and figure out if we can get these printed!
Quick Question for you, how do the Obelisk's size up compared to the Arcane Ruins set from GW?
Miasma
Hey man! while I dont have the Arcane ruins on hand, I do have this bit from the set if its at all helpful.
I don't know if it quite has the girth or height to really sit in for the main Obelisk from that set, but i think you might be able to populate the lesser arch pillars with these Obelisks.
Pre-Production has started, and I am estimated to have stock in hand by this time next week. I will officially begin taking orders as soon as the bulk printing model has cleared pre-production, which will be within the next three days.
Thanks again everyone!!! :hat off
edit: this appears to have been a lucky week for me! one of my other projects has also panned out- please take a look at the bits store thread for some news there as well!
Alright guys, sorry for a slow update on this one.
The printing format I had for mass printing didn?Tt clear pre-production, so after re-reformatting things seem to back on track. I’m going to go ahead going to go ahead wait until I have the product on hand before I start taking orders which is estimated to be on the 25th.
Thanks for your patience guys, looking forward to seeing some of these amongst your collections! :hat off
