[Archive] Chaos Dwarf revival

tronzor:

I recently came upon an old, neglected and long ignored Chaos Dwarf army for a heck of a deal.  I’ve decided to strip everything down to the bare metal and start from scratch.  So far the army list includes the following:

Astrogoth

Daemonsmith

Prophet-Sorcerer on Taurus

Castellan

4 Bull Centaurs - I’ll use 1 as Taur’ruk and the other three as a unit. (not pictured)

35 HW/Shield Dwarvfs - 20 metal and 15 plastic

40 Blunderbusses - No command here, going to have to pick one up.

30 Hobgoblin archers, custom command

50 sneaky gits (2 hw hobgoblins)

3 hobgoblin champions (I think 1 is a special character), on wolves

8 hobgoblin archers on wolves

2 Earthshaker Cannons

2 Old Rocket kits

I also conveniently have a disused Ogre Thundertusk that I can convert into a K’Daii destroyer.  Having looked around the site, it looks like I have a very solid core to an army.  I’m also so happy about Forgeworld’s FAQ that the Cannons and Rockets are good to use as the mortars, cannons and rockets in the new book, so I don’t have to mix and match.

My plan is to give the entire army these bases: Fantasy Bases-The Slate Wastes

Anyways, here’s some progress shots so far and I’ll do my best to update the page as things go

MadHatter:

Congratulations on the deal! Its great to see more bighats surfacing  the first link didn’t work btw

Bloodbeard:

Welcome to the forum tronzor. That is an amazing force you have their.

Having 50 sneaky gitz you’ll never have to start saving up for a pension.

Is painting the thing you enjoy most about our hobby? Otherwise I really can’t see any reason you would strip that beautiful army down. It’s well painted, really beautiful and it’ll take a ton of work to repaint that. At least paint up the large batch of blunderbuss, before doign anything to the already painted stuff. I’ll send over some slaves to help with all the work.

And yes, you do have more than a solid core. I just popped you listed stuff into battlescripe, with listed weapons and command groups. Three khans, astrogoth a lvl 3 prophet, no destoryer. And you land on an amazing 3562 points!

With items, banners, hell bound, lvl 4s - you’ll get even higher.

Getting magma cannons (and they are a most) for an old army like this, I think you should get 1 or two or the old Dwarf Flamecannon. Add some simple Hashut Runes and try to get some chaos dwrf crew of the internet.

Edit: There is a " in your first link, that messes it up.

Malorndk:

50 sneaky gits… do you know how much money that is on ebay? xD

How much did you pay?

Agreeing with bloodbeard on the stripping thing. Right now you have a nice playable army. Start painting the last stuff before starting to strip paint.

BABIS:

wow this is quite a large army  big hats rule!

Fuggit Khan:

Welcome to CDO :hat off

And what a beautiful vintage army you have…good to see that it will get some love and use again, I always love to see more metal Big Hats.

The sheer number of Sneaky Gits is impressive! You’re quite lucky to have come across an army such as this…have fun repainting everything and please share more pics with all of us on your progress  :cheers

Ben Saunders:

I appreciate that you want to repaint this army to make it ‘yours’, but I agree with others that - while the basing could be improved - it’s pretty nice as it is. It’s probably good advice to start with the unpainted units, before you start stripping, but on the other hand one could say it makes sense to repaint what’s already painted rather than ‘spoiling’ unpainted OOP models (in the sense that stripped models are generally considered less valuable than those never painted).

Whatever you decide to do, I assume you got a pretty good deal. On eBay, that army would probably fetch a small fortune.

Abecedar:

Welcome as well from me.   A big beutiful start for you there. The painting on those models seems to ring a bell somewhere but that may be my imagination.  Where do you hide yourself and where were they hiding?

Yodrin:

Welcome, and gz with a great deal. Agree with the above comments about the painting. It looks really nice as is, and with some base work, it will look totally awesome!!

Admiral:

Yes, really nice painting. The army have got a great atmosphere. I’m sure the bases will only add to it.

tronzor:

Thanks everyone.  Much to the dismay of the majority, I’ve already stripped the whole army down to bare metal and begun to repaint and rebuild.  There was really a lot of detail lost by the multiple coats of paint on all the figures, there was at least 3 distinct coats on most models so it really needed to be done. I’m also just the guy that has to give himself way to much work, but this will be worth it in the end. As for the bases, I’ve fixed the link but they’re the Dragon Forge Slate Wastes.  I should be ordering bases towards the end of the month.  To those of you asking how much I paid, it was way too little and some other models. Judging by the value on ebay now, 20 sneaky gits is about what I paid for the army, plus the models. Either way, it was a hell of a deal and not one I’m like to find again. And the gits will find a spot in my ogre army as gnoblars as well.  Anyways, thanks for the encouragement and I’ll be sure to keep updating as things move along.

Abecedar:

The bases look very good but it will cost you quite a bit for the whole army. Do you think you’ll try to make some of your own?

Roark:

50 Gits!

faints

tronzor:

The bases are not too expensive, at least not prohibitively expensive. I think it’ll run me about $225 to do the whole list as it stands now. I thought about making them but the time and effort need to sculpt those along with the repaint is too much.

tronzor:

Here’s a little progress update.  So far I’ve managed to basecoat the 30 archers, but I don’t have a photo of it.  I’ve also done a castellan and I’ve also done up a test model for the sneaky gits.  So far I’m pretty happy with them, but C&C welcome.

Bloodbeard:

Nice red and gold nuance there. Good to see you’re getting some paint on them ’ there’s enough models to go through.

Malorndk:

Looks good!

Btw I have started a project with getting high quality photoshop versions of all the old classic banners. I’m not far enough in to share them yet, but if you like the classic feel (and have acces to a good printer) this could be the goto solution for how to get banners for your classic army. I can even match the color themes to the units/characters carrying them, when/if the times come

BABIS:

the castellan looks very nice!

Fuggit Khan:

Very nice castellan, beautiful choice of colors :cheers

tronzor:

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. For some reason the Sneaky Git figure just won’t link directly and it keeps saying it’s deleted. Hopefully that’s not a problem in the future.
