[Archive] Chaos Dwarf test fig

giantsquig :

Here are some pics of my test fig and bass for my chaos dwarfs.

Base

My lighting does not do the fig justic. Any thoughts?

frostbit3:

Looks nice. I’d consider adding a few gold touches to hq and characters

Abecedar:

It looks great so far. i ain’t good enough myself to detail what you need to do for highlighting and such, god knows I cannot do it well enough to suit myself

The problem that hit me about bases, was how many models do you intend to do or for that matter, right from the start. Good individual / distinctive bases like yours all take a lot of time and effort and in the end per model/unit it all accumulates into so many hours.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

Maybe it is a bad picture but the armour looks like leather to me. What I presume to be a metal chest plate is the same colour as the cloth skirt but both look like the colour of leather. I’m confused. I do like the bases though!

Kera foehunter:

the snow looks good, trampled and melty Color look good that you have pick out there evilish

Goltor Lintrepide:

Soooooooooo Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

Very very true. But my plan for this army is to paint each fig individually, go nuts on the basing and display board. I want to be in the top %20 for painting scores at tournaments and have a shot at best painted.

My phone pic are awful I'm sorry about them. The lighting in my basement is not the best for taking pictures. I'm going to put a "glowing" rune on the shield and i took the highlights up a notch to help brighten up the fig.

giantsquig :

I’m thinking about painting one of the dreads purple or red to add some color to the fig any thoughts

Grimstonefire:

I would echo what Grimbold said, imo you should use a different colour for the trim, otherwise it looks like metal (which would be highly impractical for a flexible shape).

Microart bases right? I got some of those and cast them but decided I would go down a different route.

giantsquig :

Good point on the trim never thought about that. I made the bases my self real quite easy.

I was going for orange-ish brown armor. I went a tad lighter for the next one.

And made some more bases

giantsquig :

I wanted a look similar to the pic from the book but in orange.

I’m going to try and add the fire/lava cracks

Abecedar:

I is scared of lava effects. just doing fire is hard enough for me so far. But trying new things makes you get better at it all. That’s why I love entering the G.H., Artisans and Brush Slave comp’s. They push you a bit more than I would just by yourself

Grimbold Blackhammer:

I get the ‘steel’ scale mail and the ‘leather’ skirt - those make complete sense to me. Is the trim supposed to be gold? I’m lost as to what the chest plate and arm greaves are supposed to be made of. More leather?!

giantsquig :

In the pic from Tamurkhan everything that is not scale male is dark redish brown. I’m not trying for a “leather look” unfortunately thats what it’s coming across as. I’m going for a painted metal look like this

but in orange. Should I put some “Chips” in armor plates to show that It’s still metal under neath?

On some skaven figs I tried some other shades of orange and they looked like traffic cones. I still wanted to go with orange but more of a pumpkin rather than construction.

Something like this

For the trim i’m kinda at a loss. I’m not sure what materials it’s supposed to be made out of. Is it leather with studs or is it metal. Most of the pics I have seen of painted FW chaos dwarfs they have painted the trim the same color as the army.

I’ll try and take some pics in the sun today to get better lighting. I really need to make a light box.
