[Archive] Chaos Dwarfs (LoA) vs Warriors of Chaos

Nicodemus:

Post your tactics and advice here.

Malorndk:

WoC has one of the most versatile armies, so telling people how to deal with it is insanely hard. The have multiple good options of most trooptypes, and while they are expensive in points, the have the stats and specialrules to back it up in the close combat face. Never get complacent in the first 4 rounds. Eventually they will get in combat, and when that happens you’ll see if you prepared decently and thinned their ranks enough.

MadHatter:

*Deathshriekers against monster-heavy lists, a battery of 2 with a lvl 1 Daemonsmith is just 300p. The str 3 large template might be good against marauder heavy lists.

*Lore of Metal and Searing Doom wrecks units with chaos-armour+shield.

*Iron Daemon is great, blasting down big stuff and alot of infantry to grind.

Remember:

*Shots are wasted against the blasted standard.

Edited to correct errors.

Tactics vs WoC

If its a hard competitive list they will try to be in combat by turn 2.

Standard lists will usually contain:

chariots 2-3

Chimeras 1-3

Skullcrushers in units of 3-5 models

Warhounds usually atleast 1-2 unit of 5

Then variation comes with either:

Chaos warriors expect units of 18-24max expect either nurgle or Tzeentch this is usually very standard; however…

Trolls can be taken as either core or special so don’t be surprised if you are facing a blocks of trolls being one if not the best core unit available to a WOC player.

Chariot spam an additionally 3-4 so a total of about 6 or 7.

Monsters namely Shaggoths.

and occasionally a small detachment of knights.

Then lastly the most important point in a WoC army is the lord and heroes.

Typically heroes will vary depending on theme, and personal taste and additionally every hero adds something significant to the overall army. But best thing to plan for is atleast 1 lvl2 with a dispell and a bsb on Deamonic mount with a 3++ wardsave rerolling 1s.

The lord choices also vary significantly based on personal taste. But the 3 most competitive builds are either:

Flying LVL 4 Death Nurgle DP with soul feeder, 1+ AS, 2++ Ward vs fire, and a 5++ reg ward save.

The Hortense Chaos Tzeentch Lord who is stubborn, flys, and has a 1+AS and a 3++ rerolling 1 wardsave. (Please note they cannot have an unkillable Lord and BSB in the same army so take note on who has the rerolling wardsave chaos gift/mutation)

And lastly the flying Chaos Tzeetch Sorcerer lord who is unkillable like the Hortense but throws significant amounts of magic damage (Likely the easiest of the 3 lords to deal with).

Generally when facing WoC, or if your meta has a high amount of WoC players you will need to bring:

(Importantly do not bring a Destroyer or Fireborn. This will be free points to any competitive WoC player.)

An Irondemon who can deal with Skullcrushers, Shaggoths, and trolls.

At least 3 of our large template weapons. Either Rockets, Mortars, and Hellcannons. You want to take atleast 3 because against a Deamon prince you will only have 2 turns before he is in CC. You want as many chances to kill him as possible.

You may want a flamecannon however be advised it will have a tough time dealing with a lot of the main tools a WoC player brings due to str5 and low armor piercing capabilities, I would take just one to deal with trolls, and Chaos Warrior blocks.

For other choices to fill out your list, take a unit of Hobgoblins preferably around 30 mainly to keep his monsters and lords busy.

Now for Infernal Guard, id advise against taking Greatweapons or Fireglaives mainly due to the fact that when they do get into CC with our IG we will require to have our 3+/6++ parry to survive. The advantages of the extra str given by these weapons will be wasted due to how much better WoC units are at CC.

Now I do advise to take a unit of blunders, please look at this thread: http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=14694 to know why. If you do take a unit of Blunders equip them with the Banner of Eternal Flame to better deal with Chimeras, Trolls, and Festus.

Now for heroes you can take Khans, and Khans are always good to have for an all comers list because of redirecting and leading Skullcrushers away from your lines.

Take a Castellan BSB because you should expect to lose every round of CC once it occurs.

Now for our magic take a Lvl 4 with earthing rod and if possible a Lvl 1 with dispell.

So magic can actually be the best way to deal warriors of chaos, and surprisingly, the lore of metal is still a good choice for dealing with Chaos Lords and princes. The best way to achieve this, is really just throwing out a large searing doom every turn, regardless if they have dragon bane gem or not. Every turn that they are not in combat searing doom them. On average you should get between 6-9 hits a turn which will always wound on a 2+, and then due to just how averages work, you will fail about 1 or 2 to wound rolls, and then they will likely fail 1 or 2 saves. Making finishing them off with your shooting all the easier.

Taking LoD is not viable, due to the short range of the spells, and the high wardsaves and LD of his lords/heroes. P.Sun is only good against trolls and chimeras but that is what our shooting phase is for.

Shooting order for your warmachines with templates and d6 wounds should be

(after one is killed/or you cannot target it for whatever reason you move on to the next)

Deamon Prince->Chimeras->Other large monsters (giants/shaggoths/slaughterbrutes)->Chariots->Everything else

Irondemons should be targeting

Demon Prince->Solo Lords->Chimeras->Other Large Monsters->Skull Crushers->Everything Else

Flamecannons should be targeting

Chimeras->Trolls->Skullcrushers->Everything Else

Blunderbuss IG should be targeting

Chimeras->Everything Else

Khans should focus on chaffing Skullcrushers for the entire game.

Never target the unkillable Tzeentch lords with shooting but always target with FoA and Ashstorm, kill everything else in his army, those lords cannot beat us on their own. BUT a Demon Prince can kill our entire army on his own.

If he is a nice enough opponent to not take a DP/Unkillable lords id argue that the list you are fighting is soft and we will have a pretty easy game. Still id use the same shooting guidelines.
