Bloodbeard:
Add some point I’ll start a new army. Somewhere down the line and after my dawi zharr reach 3000 points.
My warhammer budget will never get high enough to buy actual games workshop miniatures (and there’s also the principal in not supporting insane costs), so I’m always looking ad good alternatives.
I’ve been in love with the regiments of renown since those were a thing. And would love to build a mercenary style army. It’ll let me use many different types of miniatures and still fit together fluff wise.
But it brings some questions up regarding the army list I’ll use. So I’m turning to the community.
The Empire - led by Lietpold
I think Thamurkhans Lietpold is a really funny character. Even though he’ll die everytime he fails his wardsave. Bringing a unit of dwarf or ogres to the army, will do wonders to the overall mercenary feel.
And the rules are official. That’s option number 1, for such an army.
The Dogs of War - Warhammer Armies Project
Anybody has experience with this list? Or any of the other lists on that great site?
I havn’t playtested or played against any of the lists there. The problem I see with the list, is that there a too many options. It seems like that armylist is able to bring any and everything to the table.
But is this an actual problem? Aren’t many of the new official armylists also overflowing with choice?
The Norse - Warhammer Armies Project
Looking for alternative models, I’ve seen that there is now a lot of cheap and cool viking miniatures. Both Hammer of the Gods and Warlord Miniatures.
And I could be really cool to build a snow/winter themed army. But this list seems even more powerful. Cheap and really nasty infantry.
Questions
Do you think the unoffical rules to over powered? Are they okay? Should one simply go for the thamurkhan option?
I could of cause just bring vikings to the Empire version and use them as swordsmen.
torn:
I dont know anything about the rules for any of these armies, but if you think the fan made lists are overpowered you might be in trouble. If you start winning games with them your opponents might just decide to say they dont want to play against those armies. So in that sense a counts as army would probably be better.
I know the fluff changed a bit but didnt they kind of mix the norse in with the marauders? You could make an all marauder WoC army and use viking models, and that should represent norse nicely. Empire might give you more options, for archers, swordsmen, harbardiers could be those long handled axes etc, and you could even get your cavalry in. The only house rule I would use wouldbe to get rid of your spellcasters and use the dwarf rune system instead.

I would rather still use the old dogs of war army I already have using the official rules released by GW in white dwarf and later released as part of the warhamer annuals. What is that? Pikemen units in hoard formation strike in 6 ranks and have always strike first in the first round on combat, oh yes please. Plus I hope Forge World takes over the rules for DoW like rumors have been going around because my 10k+ worth of DoW are not the greatest to proxy in as empire. 200+ pikemen, 100+ crossbowmen, 4 cannons, 2 hafling hotpots, and that’s not even including my regiments of the reknown

The Norse and the Chaos Marauders are close, but not the same. But you could definately use marauders in a mix with viking models to make them look "warhammer".
A maruader WoC army would unfortunately be rather boring. The need something to shoot with. I've been thinking about using the Beastmen armylist for a marauder/norse army. That could work.
But I think I'll settle on some Dogs of War type army.

Can those be found somewhere online? And do they still work in 8th edition? Might feel a bit outdated and clumsy.

I think the rules in that unofficial army book will let you do the same thing.
Thommy H:
Actually the Norse are indeed Chaos Marauders now. They have been since the Hordes of Chaos book in 6th Edition.
gashnag:
I don’t know if they are online, but even if they are a little outdated and clumsy some people play armies not because they are overpowered or the flavor of the month, but because they truly enjoy the army and its background just ask any wood elf player who used them before the new book was released. Personally I love the DoW I have their orginal army book and my own book I had made from copies of every white dwarf article and annual as well as all units from the old ogre kingdom book (I started my ogre kingdom army soli to add to my DoW) I played DoW for years with only getting a handful of wins but enjoyed every game because I got to play an army I love.
cornixt:
Just use Empire, it will be the least amount of headaches.
Bloodbeard:
Just won Lietpold the Black of ebay for a lot less than the forgeworld price. So, it’ll be an Empire army. And I think it’ll be with a ogre detachment.
Looked at different miniatures. And I’m gonna order from Warlord Miniatures webshop, they also sell Perry Miniatures. For 60£, I’m gonna have:
1 mounted warriorpriest
11 knights,
12 handgunners
10 archers
10 crossbowmen
20 halbadiers
20 pikes (will count as spears)
And 8 more guys that’ll just get thrown in somewhere.
Perry sculpts, so bassically warhammer, and very cheap.
gashnag:
I like Lietpold the Black that is how I used my DoW in my Empire army
Malorndk:
Denitely bring ogres to the army! Thats a great addition
Abecedar:
Bugger the empire. Use your Leitpold as a renegade general for yours Dog’s of War.
Admiral:
Dogs of War or Norse will be funniest to collect and convert, if nothing else.
