keckmatt:
I’m hoping to start a hobgoblin themed orc and goblin army very soon. Anyways rule wise I like goblins with spears. Here’s my dilemma, I only want to use the original hobgoblins. So I would have to chop / convert the axe wielding hobgoblins. In your opinion is it worth it? Both rule wise and and possibly devaluing the models. I’m not worried about acquiring the models as I already have what I need for the project. What do you guys think
Abecedar:
I think it would de-value them quite seriously.
and considering how many of them a whole O&G would require that would be a lot of money.
Have you thought of getting the hobgoblin heads that people are creating now and using other bodies?
Doombeard:
there is a company that sells hobgoblins with spears modelled on the games workshop ones on ebay. I think its called the battle forge? I agree the heads are the way to go, bloodbeard’s blog is a good example

I'm kind of a GW metal freak. I like to build most armies so that there GW tournament legal. Right now I have enough of them to build the army. I'm not planning on converting all of them, maybe one or two units of 30. Do you think it would be worth it tactically in game terms. I do agree that if I do it I'll end up deminishing their value from a collector's stand point.

Do you know if anyone has photos comparing the battleforge hobgoblins to the GW hobgoblins.
Bloodbeard:
I haven’t seen any comparison shots. Battle Forge, perhaps check out their homepage and send them a mail.
Doombeard:
well in that case here are your options
bolthrower crew holding bolt like a spear
standard bearer chop off standard and add spearhead
bloodbowl hobgoblins were made for conversions!
Zanthrax:
The battle forge dudes are great.
The blood bowl hobgoblin dudes are more numerous to track down and have good poses that allow for conversion. I made a musu thanks to my dremil and the drum arm from the marauder infantry plastics.

Wait. Units of 30 Gobbos? What on earth are you going to do with those. Double it and you might have something with staying power.
Honestly I'd say you'd be destroying nice Hobbo models for no purpose what so ever. But it's your models so who am I to tell you what to do.
Fuggit Khan:
I say go ahead! Chop them up!
Yes, from a collectors standpoint they could be devalued, but if you have 100+ Hobgoblins laying about, then who cares if you chop up 30 or so?
The important thing is that you like the end result…and giving them spears is a great idea. It’s an effective conversion, and their poses allow it to be done pretty seamlessly…I did it on my Hobgoblin emissaries to Admiral and Bloodbeard:

I’m also a GW metal freak…but as you pointed out, if you want to keep it GW tournament legal, then using the Battle Forge dudes may not work?
Anyways, whatever direction you go with, have fun and kudos to you for wanting to make a Hobgoblin themed O&G army :cheers

I think Xander has a great tutorial r making hobgoblins. I would do that before chopping up the oop hobgoblins

Thanks guys for all your thoughts i really appreciate it.

If i do convert them Im going to convert 2 units of 30. We dont play many games of 8th edition. We play alot of 6th ed, where you don’t need a lot of supersized units. But when I do need it I can combine the 2 smaller units and make a 60 man unit. I can even use a unit filler or 2 to make it even bigger.

Ill check it out but I’m really only into metal. Ill use the occasional plastic bit but for the most part enjoy metal entirely to much.
Miasma:
What is it about Spears that attracts you? Personally the HW and Shield or Bow and Shield options are better choices for the Parry Save in CC
keckmatt:
I try to have at least one unit of every option in book. There is something about the look of spearmen forming a guard unit for my characters that I like.
Pyro Stick:
I wouldn’t recommend cutting up the hobgoblins but im more of a collector so the thought of 60 being cut up just hurts. You wouldnt be improving on them at all by cutting them up IMO. I think you would be devaluing them by at least 50%. Dont people mostly use archers anyway? Trade your axemen to someone who wants them complete for extra archers. No point making spearmen just because theres rules for them and you like have a unit of everything if they arent actually that good but in the end i basically agree with snowblizz.

Doombeard:
I would get one of those hobgob bolthrower guys holdng the spear, cast him in resin about 100 times, out of those 100 probably 50 or so will turn out nice. Then you can add lead shot to underneath the bases to make them weigh the same as metal figures, you can find it readily available on ebay. or if you really want you can mix in a metallic agent to make the resin weigh more, its a common trick . or just make the mould in a hard RTV and then you can make metal castings. Any way you do it, casting your own is probably the way to go for such a stylised army, and a mono pose of 20 or 30 of those guys is a nice way to make such a vanity unit.
