Well what you americans call the holiday season is soon upon us and I started to notice once again the same movies cropping up in the TV schedule.
Now there are the more regular Christmas movies, a few days ago there was “Santa Clause” with Tim Allen.
But it got me started thinking about the movies that might not be Christmas movies per se.
Tonight Die Hard will be on. Weirdly enough, a Christmas movie. It is shown at Christmas and it happens at Christmas. A few weeks ago they showed Home Alone, which has the same basic properties. I also expect Home Alone 2 to be on within a week or so. And most likely Die Hard 2, both of which are sort of about Christmas.
So strange and unexpected Christmas movies? Anyone else got any.
Scrooged and Nightmare before christmas have to be the 2 I would pick. Scrooge has to be the best take on a christmas carol ever, makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Films with the word "Christmas" in the title don't really fit into this line IMO:

The main reason i remember Gremlins as a Christmas film is because of the scene when the girl reveals why she hates Christmas.
I can't think of any others though, most of them are so obviously themed around Christmas or avoid it altogether.

Yes, I was thinking about movies that aren't explicitly themed to work as a holiday movie. Whatever that is. The Santa clause, Miracle on 34th Street (which I now find are BOTH from 1994) are clearly holiday movies.
IIRC they show the movie "It is a wonderful life" on TV every year. Or so I've learned from watching people watching tv on tv...:o I guess that could qualify.
Isn't there at least one Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he tries to get a action figure for his kid or something.
The Gremlins are very appropriate, the first one is purchased as a Christmas present after all. The Home Alone movies however might actually be specific holiday movies.
Also movies that are almost always show around the holiday, here are Ivanhoe (new years day), Towering Inferno on new years eve (I think they expect noone is watching so sends whatever). There's also a couple of Swedish comedies from the 80s early 90s that are almost always shown sometime between christmas and new year. eg. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090115/
Dunno, I guess it might not be typical for americans to see the same thing twice. You strike me as thrill-seekers. After all, Swedish tv has shown the same Disney christmas specials classics for, 40 years now I think?, and would b lynched if they'd tried to change that. Its tradition.
I know nothing of the american christmas movies, but here in Denmark the last 5 years have been dominated by the NBC.
I belive Nightmare runs 5-7 times a year through december, which is quite alot, considering we have like 10 channels, and 5 million people living here.
And the best part: 3-4 of the movie screens is usual on commercial free channels! No interruption during the movie makes it 10 times better
what about “Sound of Music”? I’ve never seen the movie, but a favourite Christmas carol of mine is “Favourite Things” which I do believe comes from that movie?
