For a few years i’v been pondering how to make a Cthulhu army. I’ve finally decided to do it as a fantasy daemon army but i’m having trouble with what should be what. For some of the units I already know what they’ll be and i’m not doing all the greater damons or bloodletters and blood crushers. Here’s what I got so far.
Lord of change=Cthulhu
Keeper of secerts=Dagon
Daemonetts=Deep Ones
Horros=Y’golonac
Furies=Night gaunts
Flesh Hounds=I forget what the cthulhu dogs are called
Screamers=Elder Things
Plague Beast=Shoggoth
Feind of Slaanesh=Leng Spider
Thats all I figured out so far. Any help with figure out what heralds, plaguebearers, and flamers could be would be and other stuff. Also does any body know the name of that dog monster thing from the Lovecraft universe and what it looks like.
It sounds like an awesome and very ambitious project - I hope to see more of it!! If you are very serious about it, you should try to get your hands on some of the books for the Call of Cthulhu RPG, as there’ll be many pictures of Lovecraft’s creatures as well as from the “extended Cthulhu Mythos” from authors like August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, Brian Lumley, etc.
Flesh Hounds = Hounds of Tindalos
The Hounds don’t really look hound-like. They are called hounds because they hunt people/things across all dimensions, using corners - interstices of the universe - as teleport homers (sort of). The hounds basically look demon, several legs and are always blurred I think, as light goes through and around them.
The artwork in that second link is from the Arkham Horror board game and I think is one of the coolest Hounds i’ve seen.
One of the Heralds has GOT to be Nyarlathotep, since it is the messenger of the Great old Ones. Also, because it has so many forms, you can sculpt it however you like - although I’d keep with the three legged, single tentacle faced version - Classic Nyarly!
IMO, Elder Things don’t seem very screamer-ish. You might want to consider Flying Polyps - they’d be easier to sculpt too! The Elder things used technology and guns, so perhaps they’d be your flamers instead. Or perhaps, the Mi-Go could, since they use technology and ray-gun style things too.
Also, Deep Ones for Daemonettes seem a strange pairing. Deep Ones are slow, sluggish creatures - kind of the opposite of Daemonettes if you ask me. Have you thought about Byakhee? Deep Ones should maybe be Plaguebearers because they want to spread their innsmouth taint - that and they look very sickly and ill.
Furies could also be Mi-Go, but I do think Nightgaunts would be easier to mod.
Y’golonac as a Horror is a weird choice, if you ask me, I think a Gug would work better. Still, everyone has their own preferences for Cthulhu monsters, so go nuts!
Great Unclean One = Shub’Niggurath, or her daughters - the Dark Young?
I believe the hound sounds right. I thought it was called something else like Dar hound or something like that.
I completly forgot about Nyarlathotep. I’ve been reading the Fall of Cthulhu comics for so long you’d figure I’d remember him(er…it). Do you have a pic of the Classic Nyarl look you speak of?
I never thought about Elder things as flamers. I also think I got my names mixed up. I was also bondering the great race of Yith for flamers cause if my knowledge of Lovecrafts creatures(which aint much) they also used technology and had guns.
I could use plaguebearers instead of daemonettes for the deep ones. Then what could I use for daemonettes?
As for the Y’golonac as Horrors when I say a pic of them for the first time it just snapped in my mind that they’d make great horros.
Also completly forgot about Shub’Niggurath. She would make a great unclean one.
Another thing I got to figure out is how i’m gonna model some of these guys. Deep ones i’m gonna use bloodletter bodies with crypt ghoul arms and saurus warrior heads. Night gaunts would be kroot with wings(not sure where i’d get these) Crypt ghoul arms and an ungor head covered with GS. Shoggoth should be farily easy and strait forward as well. Do you(GRNDL) or any body else have any other ideas on how I could convert the others?
A nightgaunt is essentially a naked genderless human with gargoyle wings and no face. I would have thought that the Chaos Furies were 90% there already.
re: What to use as Daemonettes?
Mi-go, the Fungi from Yuggoth. Insectoid, chittering, fast moving…
re: Great Race with technology
Yep, I believe they did, or at least the cone shaped versions of them did, although they use pincers instead of hands. So as far as the fluff goes, its all good.
If I come up with any more ideas I will let you know.
Thx GRNDL, now if only I could figure out how to make him.
I was just noticed that your right about the furies. All i'd have to do is some head shaving and add a tail and they'd be done basically.
What do the Mi-go look like?
And go right ahead swissdictator. Will be interesting to see how they turn out.
Dino
Yeah, Nyarly would be a challenge to look "right" with pre-made parts. Its the triple-hip pelvis that will make it. I'm tempted to say use parts from the Chaos Spawn kit. Use the legs with the spiky talons on and make the hip from GS. Alternatively, if you don't mind using non-GW models, there are some Nyarly minis available:

You can also find a bunch of Cthulhu minis for use with the Call of Cthulhu (and related) RPGS. I'm not sure what scale they are, though. My guess is 25mm.
re: Mi-Go
They basically look like giant flying lobsters with brains for heads.

This one looks a bit too reptilian for my tastes, but its pretty cool. The wings look too stubby as well. Usually they are depicted with huge moth-like wings. Obviously, if you're going for a daemonette with them, they're going to be a lot smaller than the Lovecraft ideal, so they can fit on a 25mm base - Mi-go are supposed to be bigger than a man and can actually fly with him, big wings probably won't work. I'd start with a fly/insect form and work up from there. You could use pin heads as sensors/antenna to dot the brain-like head.
