Kera foehunter:

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Hi Kera. Here’s a story about a Russian ship that was built in the 1870’s.

The Novgorod (Russian: Новго?од) was an Imperial Russian warship. It was one of the most unusual warships ever constructed, and still survives in popular naval myth, often described as the “ugliest warship ever built”. The hull was circular (viewed from the top) intended to be a particularly stable platform for guns but proving to be almost unmaneuvrable in practice[1].

She was designed by Andrey Alexandrovich Popov of the Imperial Russian Navy, with the purpose of creating a stable platform armed with a few heavy guns, that could operate in coastal waters, and be well protected by armour plating[2].

The perceived advantage of the circular hull form was that a shallow-draught vessel could be built with a greater displacement; a small ship could then carry the same armament as a much larger vessel with a more typical hull form[3]. For comparison, a 100 ft long by 13 foot beam and 13 foot draught vessel would only displace about 250 tons.

The primary armament of Novgorod was two 26-ton 11 inch guns mounted on separate revolving turntables that could be moved independently or together[4]. Recoil was suppressed by a hydraulic frictional compressor, and by wedges placed in the after part of their platforms.

The ship was driven by six engines each with their own propeller shaft. Boiler and engine rooms occupied fully half of the interior hull space. The boilers were placed in two separate compartments, one on either beam[5]. Four steam launches were usually carried on deck.

Novgorod and her near-sister Rear Admiral Popov proved poorly designed in use. They pitched and rolled excessively, even in moderate seas[6]. They were slow, poorly maneuverable, and vulnerable to plunging fire. Worst though, was that the off-axis recoil of the guns would impart a centrifugal rotation to the ship[7]. In operational use, these ships would have to throw their single rudder hard over during firing, to act as “water brakes”. This severely restricted the aiming and rate-of-fire of the main guns. Both ships (dubbed ‘popoffkas’ after their designer) served in the Danube Flotilla during the Russo-Turkish War. Both were redesignated as “Coastal Defense Armor-Clad Ships” in 1892, and relegated as storeships in 1903. They were not scrapped until 1912.

Grendel has awesome overload…

I can’t wait till payday

Tarrakk Blackhand:

The cannons are awesome, but the death rocket launchers look more like fire cracker launchers.

They built the Novgorod this way because the river they needed to sail the ship on was like the Missippi River - shallow and wide. Different design.

wallacer:

Interesting read about the Novgorod.

CheTralfara:

Love that steampunk dwarf mortor cannon, definitely gonna buy one to convert into an earthshaker sometime  Kera, I am planning on building an arsenal of ships for each of my armies.

living daemon ships for all 4 of my chaos daemon armies… soon to be 6 whenever I start on my Daemons of the Horned Rat army and Daemons of Hashut army! plus steampunk daemon-bound ships for my Chaos Dwarf army.

I love the warhammer boats rules and have collected as many as I can find (online GW supplemental rules + the white dwarf supplements + the original general’s compedium ships rules) and put them together form what I call “Warhammer Realms: Fantasy Battles At Sea”. I will never understand why GW insists on making expansion after expansion for 40k and still hasn’t even made us a Legendary Battles (Fantasy Apocalypse) supplement… it really disturbs me… plus… ONLY 1 Warhammer Realms book??? I really wish GW would just split into 2 companies… 1 for 40k and 1 for Fantasy, so that they could do Fantasy releases every month instead of switching back and forth. Rant over.

Anyway, the point of all this is that I am going to be preparing my armies for warhammer at sea soon, and have already bought a box of warhammer scale toy sharks from a local toy store (they sell something called a “tube of sharks” at nearly every craft store and toy store in the US, they are the perfect size). I would love to have a warhammer at sea battle with you Kera someday. Hopefully you are not too far from PA. Maybe you will attend Gamesday Baltimore?
