with the plans for my chaos dwarf force I thought about the bases. The Dwarves will stand on some kind of obsidian/magma bases.
There will be some hobgoblins in the army. How did you base them in your army? Did they get the same bases as the dwarves? Are stone/fire bases also appropriate for hobgoblins, be it bowmen or wolfriders?
Or should I base them different but how do I then get a consistent look for the whole lot?
Please let me know what you think/did about that topic.
I’m sure most people go for the same bases, which is the obvious way to bring some uniformity to your army (given that just about everything else is different between the dwarfs and the hobgoblins).
I don’t really get why you’re considering something different. Are your obsidian/magma bases somehow inappropriate?
I would try getting them similar i some way. Paint the rim of the base in the same colour (don’t leave it black, that wont being uniformity).
Perhaps go for obsidian/magma om the dwarfa, with really tiny bits of grass on some of them and the movement trays.
The hobgoblins should have more dirt, grass and pieces of obsidian lying around. Perhaps some very thin streams of run off lava.
Check out my bases in my blog. I have dirt, lava, rocks running through. I dont plan on doing lava with the goblins as they don’t wear blackshard armor. I’ll bring in the orange contrast with some torches in unit fillers.
I like to have my wolf riders / khans on more rocky bases, both due to having a larger base and the fact that I think that such units are more scouting units who move along more uncharted or hazardous areas than the ones on foot. Could also apply to normal hob gobbos, as throwing them into more hazardous places is irrelevant to chaos dwarfs
I will go for same theme on all bases with perhaps slightly modifications for the hobgoblins. There are already some prototypes which I will show in my armyblog (yet to come) when I start painting the models.
I’m struggling with this at the moment, I decided to use Base of War Defiled Realm bases to represent a temple of Hashut, because I love the little swirling faces in the pools of liquid, which I will make look like lava or some kind of magical ether or gunk. I’m using this temple theme for the Infernal Guard, Ironsworn, Bull Centaurs and K’daai, as fluffwise they are all temple guardians in some way or another.
Only problem is then my hobgoblins & war machines will be based on Ash waste plains style bases, maybe some small details thrown in like crystals or lava so no cohesion or uniformity at all. In my head it sounds acceptable, especially considering the fluff, but when I picture the army together I get warning bells. Especially the thought of having to explain every time a new person sees the army! Lava bases are plain cool too don’t get me wrong, but sooooooo many people do it, its become the defacto way now.

I can be pulled off. You just need to add something extra to your resin bases. A little ash waste "flock" on the corners of the bases and in between cracked tiles. Consider adding small bits of scorced and blackened grass to your hobgoblins. This can also be done (in a smaller scale) to some of the temple bases.
Agree with you as well, I too started of doing lava bases for my army without thinking too much about it. But now Ive been in a slow process of removing the lava and haven’t done any new in the last few years. Was thinking about adding wasteland dry grass and skeletons to a few, but never got around to it.
But I do think that you army should be coherently based!
