[Archive] Dogs of war?(1)

Da Crusha:

I never really use dogs of war in my cd army, but while I was looking at the list the other day I realized that some of their troop types can be useful, particularly duelists for skirmishing or the cannon. do you guys use any dogs of war? what kind?

slev:

DoW is how I’m using CDs in my Skaven army. I just count them as DoW Dwarfs. DoW is a great way to add the oddball troops to your army!

Neil:

I generally only use Dogs of War in a pure Dogs of War army. I do sometimes take a unit of Ogre Ironguts, if I feel I am lacking a hammer style unit, but that is about it. Generally though I find that the rare slot usually taken by a Dogs of War unit could be better used on something else.

Also, depending upon where you are playing taking a Dogs of War unit to overcome an inherant weakness in your army can be frowned upon (eg taking Dogs of War Cannons in Vampire or Warriors armies).

Da Crusha:

I was looking through an old white dwarf recently, issue 304 I think, there was an article about a gnoblar army and one troop type called manbiters said they can be used as a dogs of war choice in a chaos dwarf army. they pretty much had a human profile and a flail and cost about 5 points I think. has anybody tried using them?

The Brain:

I have never used DOW in my CD army. I ususally play them on thier own or sometimes in my Empire army. I don’t think that there are many units in the CD army that I would give up for DOW though. Our rare slots are tight. Some of the Regeiments of Renown can be taken as special though. Some of them I might think about.

Neil:

manbiters...has anybody tried using them?

Da Crusha
Yes, I tried them once in my Dogs of War Army. My duellists fled through them and caused them to panic off the table before they could do anything. Sorry, that's not much help is it? All that you can reasonably say about them is that they are cheap. I wouldn't expect too much of them, but they might catch someone out with their flails.

Da Crusha:

yeah, I do agree that I’d rather not give up a rare choice for manbiters. although, I am willing to try experimenting with a cannon, but the rare choice is still an issue.

thats pretty cool that you’ve already tried using manbiters neal, too bad they got wiped out before they got to do anything. I like them for there really cheap S5 attacks.

BilboBaggins:

I usually have an open rare choice (and even an open Special) in my armies but I haven’t been tempted to put Dogs of War units in. The reasoning for me is that the ones I own (Lumpin Croop’s, Hot Pot, Besiegers) don’t really fit in by Chaos Dwarf army. Maybe I should borrow Rudlud’s from my darling wife, she might get upset if I change them to winter bases though.

BilboBaggins
:idea
Rudlud's would fit well in a CD army, and give some long range missle fire. You could always convert some for kinda cheap out of plastic Black orcs, that way they could match your bases.

BilboBaggins:

I’m trying not to spend any money to put them in, she has the models.

Shankenstien:

Has anyone ever considered the use of Rhinox riders paired with Bull Centaurs? That would be a hell of a charge. Also Ogre Leadbelchers and Ironguts seem like they would lend themselves well to a CD army for several reasons:

1. they are on par (or better) toughness and wounds-wise in comparison to the rest of our army.

2. Secondly, they add much needed high movement values moving twice as fast as a CD warrior! So having an earthshaker and ogres as your 2 rare choices you will recieve the benefit of slowing your enemies movement with the earthshaker, and rolling up on them reletively quickly with your ogres.

3. both Rhinox riders and leadbelchers have dealings with the Chaos Dwarfs fluffwise. So your composition scores in tournaments will not suffer from thier inclusion.

The Brain:

Rhinox riders are nothing to laugh at. My friend uses them in his ogre army, the archrivals of my CD. They are pretty tough cookies, and a lot of fun to see on the table. I am rather partial to my Bull centaurs and earth shakers though. I don?Tt think Rhinox riders would be that great in a CD army though, in a none ogre army they take up 2 rare slots. In an average size game I don?Tt think I would want to give up my centaurs or earthshakers for one unit. Lead belchers are nice but the CD army already has a nasty 12-inch missile fire weapon in the Blunderbuss, and they take up a core not a rare. As far as Iron guts go I think centaurs have them beat. A unit of Iron guts 4 wide can charge with up to 13 attacks, but a unit of centaurs can charge with 11. Same toughness, both are strength 6 with their great weapons. However the centaurs have movement 7 and can take shields giving them a higher save against missile fire. I like the odds on the stunties myself, but that?Ts me. If you want to go for that ogre alliance as part of the theme to your army it could look cool too.

qwe50:

If you want an good cheap off unit Voland’s Venators are quite good so you rare could be

6 x BC’s standard + war banner

Voland’s Venators + 1 extra 219p

If you want a good shooting unit the marksmen are really good - you need 16 to make a good unit so thats 246p same with menghils-manflayers they are also really good.

dncswlf:

I am trying to make my army list for a tournament and I have a unit of Ogres that I want to use for my Chaos Dwarf army. I am using the Dwarfs of Chaos INDY army list, and it doesn’t say anything about whether allies/DoW/whatever would be a special choice, or a rare choice… does anyone know what they would count as?

BilboBaggins:

According to the Ogre Kingdoms book All Ogre units that have Dogs of War special rule are a Rare choice in other armies except Maneaters who take up 2 Rare slots, except for a Dogs of War Army which can take Maneaters as a Special choice.

dncswlf:

Awesome! Thanks!

Bolg:

I liked fielding a hot pot and a unit of halflings with bows in my dwarf army (so no chopper, organ gun of flame cannon). I even had ne giy saying a was playing Breardy cos of that???

I once tried the DOW knights along a dwarf army but i didnt like that.

and as for my chaos dwarfs, I need both my rare slots so it isn’t an option.

BilboBaggins:

I put beseigers, Lumpin Croops and a hot pot in my Dwarf army. I explained that the the head of the humans (Beseigers) halflings (Lumpin) and Dwarfs (Dwarf Lord) owned an inn on the edge of the Moot in Stirland.

Da Crusha:

I have a whole bunch of halflings and was thinking about putting them in my cd army as a Dow choice but it doesnt feel right. and then it came to me, they will be slaves! ill paint them to look all dirty, make their clothes look torn and then have chains on their feet attaching them to each other. its the perfect excuse to use 'em:D! clearing a rare slot for them is another issue…

qwe50:

I think it make good sense that the Chaos Dwarf would use DoW

There are very few chaos dwarfs but they are rich (all there mines and workshops) so to bring some numbers to there armyes they use hobgoblins, slaves and DoW
