Wasup guys, i didn’t see something similar on the fofo so i decided to open a new thread to speak about an army that many people don’t know: the DOGS OF WAR
Dogs of war are official units created by GW in order to be added in any army of warhammer as rare or special choices.
There is a dogs of war codex witch sum up all the mercenary units ever edited by GW and i think it’s a perfect tool for chaos dwarf lords who can pick up idea and appropriate units they need to construct theire own army. Chaos dwarf are few and often use mercenary troops as auxiliary after all.
For exemple, thanks to the Dogs of war army list, you can recrute ogres to represent the links between those monsters and chaos dwarfs or using theire rules en profil to represent chaos dwarf demonic constructions.
You can also recrute mercenary canons, giants, flying units and so on and everything is official! No need to ask permission to the opponent and of course, it’s viable in tournaments.
Here is the link to the dogs of war army book (sory, this is the french version)
There is a whole community about these guys, and the have their own online magazine. Read Word of Hashut and they’ll be mentioned quite a few times.
I personally love the dogs of war and have always wanted to play a Tilean army. However, my fiancée would murder me I’d I started another army before I finished this one
Yes, you’re right: I mistook it for an actual fan-made list that’s floating around at the moment. This does appear to be just a complication of all the White Dwarf articles about Dogs of War from early 6th Edition, with the addition of ones introduced later and a hefty chunk of the Ogre Kingdoms book! I’m not completely sure how their Dogs of War rule works in 8th Edition (didn’t their FAQ remove it?).
I have a dogs of war army. It even more expensive to collect than Chaos Dwarf figures. I’ve played games of 500 points to 5000 points and never lost. The 4 ranks of pikes always attacking first and the ability to dominate magic with all sorts of Calvary at the same time make it a very nice army to play. I wonder how they’d fare in the current edition, I haven’t played for a couple years.
I don’t intend to dredge up older threads as a habit, but rather than starting a new thread…

So, this is pretty much defunct in 8th ed., correct? Perhaps in the friendly game environment an opponent would let you occupy a rare slot with DOW. But, there is no longer any supporting rules for this I’m inclined to believe. This is a shame for CDs as I always liked the inclusion of Ogres
Incorrect, GW has retired all the DOW entry in the previous army books 'cause the DOW army book detail how to use dogs of war in other army. Their is an official source saying so! DOW are still officials and legals.
Fielding ?~Dogs of War?T units in other Warhammer armies Other armies from Ravening Hordes or the Warhammer Armies books can field units from the Dogs of War list. In general, they are included in the lists as a Rare choice. In addition, the following restrictions apply: Empire, any Chaos, Dark Elves, Skaven, Vampire Counts, Khemri, Dwarfs, and Lizardmen armies can field any unit from the Dogs of War army list. Chaos Dwarfs, Wood Elves, High Elves and Orcs & Goblins can field any unit from the Dogs of War army list except for Dwarfs. Bretonnia cannot field Dogs of War at all
What’s “Khemri”? How do we define “Chaos”? What’s “Ravening Hordes”? What about Ogre Kingdoms, why aren’t they mentioned? This pdf is on the GW website somewhere, is it?
I’m being facetious, but citing something from two editions ago as “current” rules is stretching credulity slightly! It’s obvious that the quoted parts only fit in with the current rules by using a fair amount of interpretation, and if we’re going to be so permissive, it’s pointless to talk about “legality” anyway. In other words, any opponent who accepts the above as evidence of DoW being a current army is probably the kind of person who already allows obscure, OOP armies anyway, thus rendering the point moot.
Dogs of War should be used with your opponent’s permission only. They’re not a currently supported army, their rules are no longer readily available through any legal channels and the latest FAQs expressly edit mentions of them out of the current Armies Books.
So… If we kept going this way, chaos dwarfs won’t be official? They are army from V6 and previous and no official faq has been done since right? I’m looking for official declaration from GW staff and when i got them, i will post it here.
DOW are not dead!I use to play with them in my OG army.
Choas Dwarfs aren’t official anymore they were last covered in the now unsupported Ravening hordes. This is why there are a pile of fan lists on this site. FW will make a series of sets of rules that will be only allowed to be played in tournaments and private clubs and friendly games if the other people agree to do so. Same can be said of these fan lists.
Remember a person only has to play you if they want to, if they don’t want to play a CD army or a Empire army its their choice to opt out. DOW fall into the same line really if someone will play against them they will if they won’t they wont.
Tremendous insight given into this, many thanks all. I remember of course reading that DOW “which armies can take what” list in an older rulebook or army book, but I thought it was rendered non-applicable in 8th.
I guess fielding an unsupported unit from one unofficial list within an equally unsupported army list isn’t asking for too much then
of course with an opponent’s OK. and to mimic nitro: any new “official” Tileans would be great… perhaps a “Baron” of the Border Princes, bands of Highwaymen and of course a few Pirates :yar ect. ect.
