From over-mining to draining the River Ruin, ideas for CD scenery

Holes in the World

Skitter:

Open mines is a big part of the image I have in my head when I think of the plain of Zharr. Would fit our industrial nature quite well. But should we not dig in squares instead of circles?

Are you sure a square hole would be a good idea, there's several practical reasons for mines being dug in spirals.

Skitter:

Yes, I know that the laws of nature makes a circular hole more practical, I am thinking in a purely fluffy way:hat off

Circles and cuves are for elves, I like my dwarfs with a bit more rough edges.

Kera foehunter:

that a hole and some big one… But i think with the slaves and beast of burdens C.D. be more of strip mining

GRNDL:

I think this is a bit more appropriate for CDs:

Darvaz: The Door to Hell - English Russia

Edit: Changed link to a different site. Try it now, might work better.

Kera foehunter:

thows are some cool night pictures of the hole grndl

Khan!:

Hm, that russia-link had pictures but now they have been replaced with boxes reading “I tried to steal this image but was retarded”… unfortunate! So I cannot see them.

X-Porter’s images are pretty crazy though! I give the Yukon one -2 points for being Canadian, because I am saddened by the presence of such things in my country :frowning:

The image for a CD terrain piece is perfect, although I might add lots of tubes and cogs and steam valves to the pit. I’m reminded of the terrain improvement from the old Alpha Centauri game, a ‘bore hole’ I think?

Grotsnik:

i have a story coming out in word of hashut 4 i hope it really describes to you my vision of what the plain of zharr would look like

Allanp:

those pictures are fantastic. he night pictures are so powerful. but in my opinion i think that the chaos dwarfs may stick with the original dwarf idea of digging tunnels. som things thy just migh not change.

although i can see how the change of location miht cause problems.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

That looks awesome…I wonder how long it’s going to burn for?

GRNDL:

So long as there are combustible gasses coming up from beneath the ground in that spot, those fires will continue to burn. It wasn’t originally burning, but was set alight to prevent toxic gasses from escaping to the surface.

There is a similar situation in Centralia, PA, USA. A fire broke out in a coal mine and its been burning for something like 50 years. The nearby town has been evacuated. This town was a major influence for the video game and movie Silent Hill.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Wow! I didn’t know that, I just thought the Japanese were really good at Horror ideas. I have all the Silent Hill’s up to #4 for PS1 & 2. It’s the best series out there, however, I hear the latest isn’t that great.

WOW! Just looking at the history of the town… founded by Johnathan Faust. Wasn’t Faust a play about the Devil? "The borough’s founder, Alexander Rea, was one of the victims of the secret order when he was murdered just outside of the borough on October 17, 1868. Three individuals were convicted of the crime and hanged in the county seat of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania on March 25, 1878. Several other murders and arsons also occurred during this period."

1948 plane crash

This was a world where no human could live, hotter than the planet Mercury, its atmosphere as poisonous as Saturn’s. At the heart of the fire, temperatures easily exceeded 1,000 degrees. Lethal clouds of carbon monoxide and other gases swirled through the rock chambers.

Sounds a lot like Silent Hill!
