[Archive] End Times (spoilers, etc.)

ashur:

I have always thought that there are dozens of settings inside the Warhammer universe that GW could have turned into massive campaign books like the End Times without ending the story.

Just look at the Great War against Chaos. Magnus the Pious, Asavar Kul, Tzar Alexis, King Alrikson, Engra deathsword, the siege of Praag and Kislev… Why not explore the past instead of ending our future?

Admiral:

Absolutely, and I've always been the first to argue that GW would never "advance the timeline" for that very reason. But then they did, so what do I know, eh?

I'd say it's probably not a coincidence that all the old hands are basically gone and fanbois and fanfic writers are in charge of it. Desperately wanting to stamp their mark on the universe.

I'm not a big fan of ET, which maybe shows... I haven't bothered getting into it at all, because I smell a retcon a mile away. But it bears all the hallmarks of a forced attempt to serialise a setting into a story.
Stuff like the Simpsons and Donald Duck comics work for decades because they don't try holding to a serial continuity.

Very well put. I tend to agree with you. Nevertheless, cool as the End Times might be, I won't buy into that the actual Warhammer world ended and reshaped itself. That happened in some insane visions, or a parallell pocket within the Realm of Chaos at best. Nevertheless, whatever GW conjures for this new setting will be interpreted as taking place in said mad vision or dimension, so if the new fluff is of any value at all, it will get filed under that section for me.

I will eat the cake and keep it.

Back in 6th edition, they did a small thing on the War of the Beard, with special Elf and Dwarf lists. I had a go at continuing this for other armies of that era, calling it Golden Age of Warhammer, when so many races were at a different prosperity, including a living Khemri army. I guess this would have been an equivalent to Warhammer 30K, which is pretty popular right now. Sadly, I seem to have lost the lists I wrote for it, but I think I did O&G and Chaos, plus a couple more (probably Chaos Dwarfs).
