Hey all,
Got a question it’d be good to get the opinion of some more battle hardened players:
I got a smallish CD army around 2500 points if everything is thrown in (Iron Demon/Magma Cannon/Mortar/mounted prophet/4 Kdaai/4 Bull Centaurs/10 IG with HW/10 IG hand weapons and shields).
Here’s the question: I got two units of 18 IG with fireglaives (30 IG with fireglaives and two sets of Command). How many, if any of them do you think it would be worth converting from fireglaives into blunderbusses?
I generally play low point games (1500 is a large game for me) but I like the idea of having a few different options to play with. Are blunderbusses worth it at the points when they’ll be in units of ten (and more importantly should I cut the tips of my fireglaives and make little blunderbuss barrels as per the very handy conversion thread recommendation)?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
The blunderbuss unit will not be as effective if you run it in such small numbers. The re-roll to wound is really needed for them to put a dent in T4 or better units. Since you are still trying to figure out what direction you want to go, why don't you just use your fireglaives as blunderbuss until you know for certain? I have a unit of 33 fireglaives and I use them as both fireglaives and blunderbuss. It allows for some variety without having to spend several hundred dollars on a similar unit. Try them both, see what works best, make major conversion decisions later. Cheers :cheers

Not a bad shout. I’m just need to silence the voice in my head telling me to ‘BUY MORE CHAOS DWARF STUFF! GET ON EBAY! BITE THE BULLET AND ORDER OFF FORGEWORLD! JUST GET MORE! HAVE MODELS FOR EVERY POSSIBLE COMBINATION!’
sam585:
Blunders only become worth it when they are ran in a unit between 23 and 30 strong. Anything smaller and the unit will really not accomplish much. The difficult thing for LoA is that we are expensive point wise.At 1500 points sword and shield infernal guard are the best option because you can get a good sized unit without detracting from the rest of the armies point allowance. The other options are too expensive so that when you make the unit you will either have to take points from somewhere else to make the unit to a good size, or you take the bare minimum and have them be small.
I would just buy one more pack of handweapon and shield infernals and 1 rocket to have a good selection for 1500 point battles.

Live by the blunderbuss die by it. I love the damage output they have, add in lore of metal and even heavy cav cringes.

First of all:
LazySamurai is right: Stay with the fireglaives as models and use them for both options. I wouldnt mix 18 and 18 but go for fireglaives or blunderbusses in a big unit.

I played Blunderbusses from 22+ successfully in 2500 pts matches. Most opponents won
t shoot too much at them because its hard to get victory points from that unit as they have t4 and 3+ armor save (sometimes I pack in the BSB with the Magic resistance armor also).
The Blunderbusses are great, but 12" is a short range. Often they will not shoot at all. But the enemy will respect them, that is sure, and they change the game.
The Fireglaives are more versatile and especially good against ogres and orcs where they hit at the same time or before great weapon units with S5.
18" range is a bigger threat for chaff or fast cavalry troops like elves. Shooting from them is normally not decisive but a nice addition.
Geist:
If your using blunderbusses your playing a very D heavy game. Which means your arty needs to be barking every turn else they have no reason to close. When the enemy closes and they have been raped by our fire, then the blunderbusses start to shine. Add to the fact that in close combat we get to use shields. Makes them more my choice than glavies, longer range and better st for better saves.
Roark:
I bought the Russian Alternative gunners and clipped off the glaive-blade parts with the intention of using the minis purely as blunders. Zero people have had issues with me using them as glaives from time to time.

Please don’t do that.
TheHoodedMan:
The russian gunners are superb, with or without the bayonet.:hat off
I cant imagine proxing them as fireglaives could be a problem, even at tournaments. Most people don
t know the CD models anyway;).
