I’m quite certain that the new Wood Elves, to be competitive, will still have to play points denial type lists with lots of mounted shooting. But with High and Dark magic, +1S at short range on ALL bows, and a general points reduction to some units, I think Wood Elves will become far more viable. Top-tier? No. But Mid-tier? Probably.
I also think this lends hope to Bret players that GW will continue with new Fantasy army books this year.
I think the Treeman is pretty cool. With a more traditional paint job, it’ll look good and Ent-like.
Not keen on the demise of the Lore of Athel Loren though; similarly not keen on the idea of WEs using the 8 lores, especially Lore of Metal(!). Not sure how that got the green light.
New Wardancer plastics should be interesting.

Why? We don’t know what 90% of the list costs or does yet, nor have we seen new troop types I remember people saying similar things before the 7th ed DE book was released and boy were they wrong.

Just 'cause smelly humans use it to make horrible machines and try to turn lead into gold doesn't mean that's all it's good for! I really like them getting access to both High and Dark Magic since it positions them as the neutral compromise between the other Elf factions, and if you have those lores you basically have to have all the rulebook lores because, fluff-wise, that's the whole concept. Works for me anyway, and I get to play around with the book for real and make a new army for my wife!
I was at a tournament last weekend, played Woodelfs with the ETC rules so I had access to all the battle magic (played Light, loved it). love the fackt we get both High and Dark. means we get to seriously tune our mages to are playing style.
Oh and I’m looking forward to start sulptintg whatever new forest spirit/didden unit type they give us (:
Anyhoo, the GW studio are well known for their odd colorscheme choices, and I think thats the problem with some of the treeman pics too. When we see the regular (non-sword) version painted in normal woodland colors he's probably going to blow us away. The strangleroot thing coming out of his hand in particular looks very cool. Great 3D sculpt IMO.

I gotta agree with this. You remember when people saw the first (blurry) pics of the new Carnosaur kit? Everyone (including me) went ahead ranting about how GW ruined the T-rex concept, then White Dwarf came out and everyone was in awe...

I’d say the new treemen really just look like scaled up versions of the existing dryads, which is a direction I like. The Spriggans happen to also look like the current dryad models - which came first? I’ve no idea how long skyrim has been around for.

Hmmm...I think you are in fact right.
I had not even thought about the similarity to the GW dryads. And as impressive as Skyrim designs are, it's a known fact that much of their design material was copied (inspired) from other sources.
Oh well, they are still very nice models.
I think it’s probably part of their design brief these days to get some clear water between the Warhammer designs and LOTR/Hobbit stuff, and since Treemen were always just Ents with the serial numbers filed off, I certainly think making sure they look nothing like Treebeard is an important step.
I actually really like them anyway. I’ve always felt the Dryad kit is one of the finest for Warhammer and was emblematic of the unified design ethic for armies that the Wood Elves really blazed a trail with at the end of 6th Edition. Making Treemen fit with that is a great thing in my eyes, and the way that they look somehow lithe and nimble, the way the Ancient looks like an actual caster, is such an unexpected twist on a trope we thought we all knew. My wife plays Wood Elves and I’m very tempted to buy her one but I’ll be jealous of her being the one who gets to build and paint it!
So I clicked on the link of the two treemen ancients on either side of the elf, and I got to tell you that red background got me thinking. I have it all figured out now. So one day Khorne rolls out of bed and says “yah know what?, I think I will go hunting today” So he wanders over to his closet and pulls out his camo green hunting fatigues. Thus is born a treeman ancient, its Khorne in his hunting gear.
