[Archive] Going up against WoC

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

Hi guys, I have a 3k battle coming up against Warriors of Chaos. I’ve been playing the warriors forever but this will be my 3rd battle with the followers of Hashut. Anyone have any advice for what to look out for? Dp with the 2++ fire ward is obvious. Is it even worth bringing destroyers? Anyway if there is already a thread like this then please point me in the right direction

Grimbold Blackhammer:

The problem with Warriors of Chaos are the sheer number of options he has to bring. I’d say it’s safe to assume he’ll have an unkillable Demon Prince and the only things we have to stand up against that are a K’daii Destroyer and an Iron Demon.

Not to sound defeatist but he has superior movement, combat ability, and magic. Our advantage is shooting but I doubt you’ll shoot him off the table. I’d go for a Leadership bomb - two Hellcannons plus a metal or death wizard. Chalice is a must (don’t be a jerk when using it!). I wouldn’t put my Lord in combat even with one of his crappy heroes so I think the Flask of Ashrak would really irritate his chariots (if you think he’ll bring a bunch) and then hide him in the back. And Magma Cannons are good against everything he will bring (except his Demon Prince) so at least one of those.

Basically I’d say the odds are against you. Go in to have fun but a win is far from assured.

Bloodbeard:

Bring ward saves. High wardsaves. So the peince amd heroes will waste wound opportunties in challenges.

I hate that demonprince - i think he’s too easy to make ‘unkillable’. And he’ll properly wear the dragonbane gem. But that said:

Out sorcererprophet is too expensive, but he has lore of hashut, and you’ll need it. I think the demonflask is too expensive - it prevents the lord from bringing protection. In the last two battles my prohet has destroyed himself on turn 1 - so now i bring the earthing rod at 25 points.

Try and get ashstorm!

1. Preventing a charge from the flying prince and stopping his magic.

2. Bring the black hammer of hashut. Try to get that 1 wound kill. Since the hammer is not a flaming attack. And it’s +2 strength and let’s you use a shield.

3. A fireball. Roling 3d6 hits, his allmost bound to take a ‘double wound’.

Bring the destroyer. He’s tough and most importantly fast. With some clever movement the destroyer will get the charge on the knights or better yet the chariots.

Bring the chalice. Use it as intended (I disagree woth Grimbold). Haven’t met angry opponents yet - just anoyed. But WoCs unkillable demonprinces are just as gamebreaking.

Lots of WoC goes for halberds. So our shields and 6++ are very nice to have. Plus the 3 points for greatweapons are a lot. But with the razor banner your castellan stubborn infantry block will still do a lot of damage.

I think we are a fairly even macht against WoC.

And read my battle report against WoC. It’s a couple of posts up, see link in my signiature.

You could go for a the panicattack as Grimbold suggests. But it’s a bold move. If the cannons actually hit and the units break - they still need to run over the board. I wouldn’t use the tactics, because I’m afraid not to earn enough victory points. But it sure could be nice seeing a chaos army running around like panicked hens whil blasting them away.

Let us know how the battle goes.

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

Thanks for the advice guys. Lots of food for thought.

Very good point about the challenges. This will mess him up a little.

Destroyers are coming now, you have both reassured me  It will be hard getting the irondaemon into the dp but against anything else it’s gold, i’ll try and juggle it in.

My last 2 games my prophet had ash storm turn 1 but by the end of game 1 he was a lv1 and by game 2 turn 6 he was a lv2 without ash storm hehe. 2nd game he even blew up his whole bodyguard… This kind of bad luck has never effected me so much, oh and then the toughness test… well you all know what i’m talking about… I’ll post a list soon. Time to get nasty

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

So here is the list i’ll be running in 16hrs

Plan is to castle up in the corner. The prophet and castellans are in the GW IG horde with razor standard. Flanked by hellcanons. Khans and destroyer disrupt. Warmachines unleash hell. Any advice or last minute changes are very welcome!

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

So the battle didn’t really go to plan but it was close and we had a great game. Highlights:

-He didn’t bring a conventional “net list”. It was really optimised to rip up Chaos Dwarfs. He had a Slaanesh dp with Shadow, a large unit of Slaanesh Marauders with Wulfrik, 2 Shaggoths, 1 Chimera, heaps of dog chaff, large unit of Slaanesh marauder horsemen, 9 GW Ogres of Tzeentch with the Demonic mount Tzeentch bsb with a 1+ 4++ reroll 1’s and ironcurse icon so the ogres have a 5++ against warmachines, warshrine.

-I wasn’t expecting all the low armour…

-Lore of metal was only good for glittering robes, the warmachine crews became very hard with the extra save

-My prophet IF glittering robes killing 10 of my IG

-Hellcanons are the best flank support unit. Very versatile and extremely hard to budge.

-His BSB became a DP

-Wulfrik and his ambush marauders were very scary, they popped out in turn 2 right near the warmachines but through shear lucky rolls my WM crews and the daemonsmith babysitting them were able to hold them up long enough for the destroyer to plow into their flank

-Destroyer at one stage had the Slaanesh DP, a Shaggoth, Marauder unit, Ogres, 2nd DP all fighting against him…

-2 Shaggoths and a Chimera running at your line is very distracting. He ran the Chimera without regen or anything knowing i would have to target it. It died turn 1 but it drew fire away from his real nasty stuff.

-Tzeentch Ogres Champ, BSB, Wulfrik and the marauder champ all got a huge ammount of buffs from the warshrine and it made his bsb a dp…

-Tzeentch Orges with ironcurse icon bsb were very effective against the warmachines

-1 deathshrieker and a flame cannon killed there max ammount of troops per template in 2 turn against the marauders, all hit, all wound… There were about 10 left with Wulfrik when they charged my warmachines

-Shadow magic is very effective against Chaos Dwarfs. Pit of Shades was cast on my GW IG with the 3 characters in turn 1. I lost my bsb straight away and another 9 IG but somehow the other Castellan and the PRophet passed their initiative tests!

-Killed his general with a hellcannon shot. It was not a glorious end but i could tell my Prophet was pleased.

-Destroyer is still a beast even with The Withering and Enfeebling foe  I decided this game to never field 2 of these things…

-A loose Shaggoth broke through my line in the last turn and flank charged the IG unit. He killed 6 with his thunderstomp and the unit broke! He chased them down killing any chance of a victory… I decided no more big deathstar units like this one… The weakness of having a misfireing prophet and low initiative are killer…

All in all it was a fun game and i’m loving the new playstyle.

Bloodbeard:

Thanks for the report. Shame that it turned out a loss. Those low armour chaos armies also fool us. Been playing marauder armies a couple of times. The destroyer and fireborn suddently get crowned days though.

Your guys died well for Hashut. Thats a good thing.

deadlydeceiver:

Well, also lost games can be fun. It also seems like it wasn’t totally one-sided.

That sounds like you should re-read the “Look out, sir!” rule ^^ (–> 2+ “save” against templates)
