[Archive] GW Auction

GRNDL:

I’m sorry to hear that guys, it does sound like a bust. I’m not sure why they aren’t going all out for it. Most of the stuff they put up for auction isn’t going anywhere and they can only make money on it. I know that each time I’ve gone to one of them (about 3 times now) I’ve slapped down between $300 and $400 cdn simply because its stuff that a) you didn’t know you could get, b) stuff that you see once in a blue moon and c) good deals.

A lot of the lots that used to be sold are collections of stuff no one is going to buy anyway. I looked at the auctions as a way of GW saying thank you to their customers, but I guess no more.

/shrug

Sorry you guys had a bad trip out. Maybe the fire will be rekindled after GW’s “reorganizing”.

Xander:

Ya, I usually drop some decent coin during auctions. Not this time. Man, it was bad.

Oh well. I am starting to think they are abusing the Auction as a way to get people into the store.

Sojourn:

agreed. huuuuuuge let down and the prices were basically just 50% of the original price… last time they were like “$10? no one moves ok, how about… $5? bid ok, sold for $5” this time it was “$25? that’s only $2/person… I’m not going lower than that no bids ok, next item”. the only thing that seemed like a good deal was some sort of space marines megabox… should’ve retailed at $1100? went for $340. it had a$$loads of peoples in it.

the funniest part of the day for me went as follows:

item up for bid, some LotR thing.

older guy (late 30s?) bids $20 (I think)

little girl (seriously, like 8 years old) looks up at her mom who nods, and the little girl jumps around bidding $25.

older guy: $30

me: awww, c’mon buddy, let her have it

guy: looks around who am I bidding against? little girl raises her hand oh man, I feel like a jerk… she can have it"

hahaha. Actually, Xander had bid and won some bits for like $5, but he felt soooo let down by it all, we left without purchasing it. shrugs

well that happened here, but i thought that the kid was like 6 years old and MADE of money! But he was in-fact something like in grade six but still made of money....:o

Kera foehunter:

Sorry to here that you didn"t find any deals

AGPO:

Ah well, better luck next time. In all likelyhood GW have cracked down on the auctions.

Maybe the fire will be rekindled after GW’s “reorganizing”.

GRNDL
What reorganising is this? Do you mean to tell me they’re going to start doing things properly, or is it another rip off tactic

GW are obviously revamping their "business" strategy to maximize $$ by reducing material and/or manpower cost. Their bitz ordering was taken offline for reorganization. Their strategy to plastic sets is different - charge same price for less models, pack more models on less sprues. Their army book/codex approach is more condensed - less variety with same models, etc.

My use of the word reorganizing is sarcastic, hence the quotes. IMO, they are trying to drain every last drop from what they do, but at the cost of losing their main/regular customers. Rumour has it that they will make more off their licences in video games than they will or do in the hobby/wargaming arena.

Doogle:

My store was going to do auctions this weekend, but they decided to just put everything at a 25% discount, which is pretty lame.

I know for a fact that the Galrauch model and the Malekith box were going to be in the auction.

I was going to try and acquire both. Not anymore.

AGPO:

25% off is still a pretty good deal if its stuff you were buying anyway

Xander:

The thing I find interesting about auctions is the strong attendance. You always have large numbers. People are always clamouring for cheaper prices and in many cases people spend way too much (guilty) simply because the prices are lower. It makes you wonder about GW’s price point, and how if they had a significant price drop that might spur more sales and less resentment. It’s a tough call, price pointing is always a tricky business.
