[Archive] Halfling concept/new army

Allanp:

Hey guys.

so all of my essays are finished for this year and inbetween doing my revision for exams i fancied a new challenge or at least idea for an army. obviously i will be tinkering around with chaos dwarfs :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: but at the same time i have always loved the idea of halflings.

so my questions are does any one know where i couldfind some kind if halfling rules? i do remember there being a journal at somepoint using an army from the moot and remember it being a fantastic laugh too but these rules will extremely outdated now. also need to get the journal again to compare to new rules.

and does any one know of any halfling miniatures around. i have found some battleforge models which look goodbut i was just throwing the question out there.

thanks in advane for you haelp :stuck_out_tongue: :hat off

I wrote some Halfling rules once, but they never really got out of the basic Word document stage. It had swans with killing blow (they can break a man’s arm, see), types of beer as magic items and a cart carrying supplies that made all the Halflings within 12" Stubborn.

:o I'm never going to the park again.

Kered:

Remember if it’s strong enough to break your arm it is strong enough to break your neck.

Grimstonefire:

Some Pig Herders like O&G would be funny.

They would have to have some rules for stealing magic items as well. Here are some rules I found

Willmark:

Check with Matt Bird, his crew is working on a Halfling army book.

Thommy H:

I bet theirs won’t have a magic item called ā€œRed Coatā€ that gives +1 Ld, only works if your general is on a horse and has hounds and makes Wood Elf models hate him…

clam:

Yeah, like Willmark said Kev Coleman and Matt Birdoff are doing Halflings as part of their Allied contingent book. The Tales of Battle - issue #7 magazine will have a first draft of the upcomming list.

warh:

Thommy H: I bet not, that sounds like a strange item;P

Thommy H:

It’s a joke about a once-popular British pastime:

warh:

fox hunt for the win:D

Hashut’s Blessing:

Generally sounds good Thommy H, but it’s an urban myth that swans can break an arm. They don;t have the strength to, unfortunately. However, the rest is both clever and decent.

What about Chicken Cavalry? I remember seeing that as a unit for Halflings at some point, lol… Not a fan of it, but it seemed amusing nonetheless

(P.S. Cameron wants fox hunting back, but most others

Thorne:

Ive seen before a entire army of halflings made from toy plastic soliders if I can recall they were 1/72 scale with minor head works bulking out wiht green stuff ext ect to give a distinct hobbit look. They were very cool and used the dogs of war rules for the main part.

Thommy H:

but it's an urban myth that swans can break an arm
Yes, I know. But it's swan cavalry - it's supposed to be a joke. My whole Halfling list is essentially a series of in-jokes based on British culture, alcohol and Lord of the Rings (one of the magic items is "Fred's Ring of Doom").

Thorne:

Thommy we must see this list ! sounds like my type of army

Thommy H:

I think I’ve uploaded this before, actually, but here it is again. It was written about two years ago, when Warhammer was a bit different (0-1 choices are no longer en vogue, for example) and it’s unfinished - the characters have no points costs, it’s missing the advertised special Magic Lore, but the basic stuff is all there. It may not be balanced, so don’t come to me complaining: it’s a draft that I never went back to. Read at your peril.

Allanp:

Those are some fanatstic ideas Thommy H. i realy like the brawlers idea.

the swan cavalry i have heard before too and they seem like i good way to go with this. was also thinkin of maybe some sort of goat rider (possibly to replace the swasn or as another choice) that do impact hits or something like that. maybe in th esame way as ogres although starting at strength 2 or 3.

has anyone got any more info on Kev Coleman and Matt Birdoff?

dont think i have heard their names before now (extremely sorry f this is some sort of blasphemy hahaha)

chicken cavalry is a different idea and sculpting some sort of giant chicken could be a great laugh. brings back images of monkey island hahaha).

Also i was thinking of maybe unit of housewives or something, they cause a stuuborn bonus for every unit within 12" :stuck_out_tongue:

cheers guys

Thommy H:

I think the swans were in the Citadel Journal list. I’ve never read the list, but I’ve seen the cover and it had swan riders. The concept would be that the Moot’s ruler (what is he? I know he has a vote as an Elector Count) theoretically owns all the swans in the Empire, sort of like the urban myth about the Queen owning all the swans in Britain.

Kevin Coleman wrote the Dwarfs of Chaos Indy GT list that’s become very popular. Matt Bird is his ambassador or cheerleader or something.

Allanp:

aaaaaah that way the swans make a lot more sense haha. the thought of a halfling elector count is quite amusing. could be a very amusing conversion

and i rmember printing out the indy gt rulebook for chaos dwarfs, wonder how i missed the name of the person who wrote it hahaha. thank you

Ronshank:

I love these halfling rules you should give them some umbrellas slackville-baggins’s style (I was so ticked off when the scouring of the shire did not happen in the LotR movies special edition, I knew it wouldn’t make the ordinary version but grrrr…). I’d come up with more ideas but my British history is limited to the stuff they taught me at school (1066, Henry etc) and doco’s I watch. If it was me i’d probably get side tracked by the ideas in terry pratchett books.

.:By the way it’s not an urban myth the queen does techniqely own all the wild or escaped swans in Britian. One of the many usless laws which where really good at the time (100’s of years ago) that no one ever bothered to get rid of but acts like it doesn’t exist except for ceremonies. Reading funny achaic laws is one of lifes pleasures. Europe of course having been around for so long has quite the lions share but any country can find their own. Don’t believe me ask yourself the question why do so many royal goverment jobs come complete with a unflattering medieval uniform, or why it’s so darn hard to light a fire in Buckingham Palace

Swans used to be eaten by the aristocracy up to Tudor/Elizabethan ages and hence the arisotocracy owned them. Swans ceased to be a popular dish when all swans not already captive in England were declared the property of the monarch, so catching one to eat could result in a short (or not so short) stay in the tower. Two livery companies have been granted a special dispensation to own swans, hence the annual ā€˜swan-upping’ sessions. During these, representatives of the two companies are allowed one day to catch swans and mark them with either one or two notches on their beaks. Any unmarked birds remain the property of the monarch. That is why there are non-royal swans, and yes they still do this today, not the best explaination a proper explaination of the rules here Swan Upping on the River Thames - History by The Royal Windsor Web Site this actually explains the Uppings

And I’d love it if people started running around my country killing all the darn foxes. I’m sick of them killing my chickens and there are heaps of them even in the middle of the city. You just hardly ever see them except in certain areas at night, mind you most people know that random importing of animals is not always a good thing now so at least it shouldn’t happen again… that hunt thing was the dodgy reason they imported them in the first place. I promise not to add anymore random things now

Ooooh another idea for the halflings, play the Warhammer role playing game and see what some of the weird combos a halfling can be, that should give up some inspired idea’s. At least the last time I played it did I was a Halfling theif who kept rolling unrelated skills, pit fighter anyone
