[Archive] HBO's Rome

Admiral:

Have you watched this two-seasons series? What did you think about it?

I for one hope the rumours about a Rome movie or a remake of I, Claudius by HBO will turn out true, for the 2005-2007 TV-series has a special magic about it. Not only is it one of the TV-series I’ve stomached to watch through whole, but it’ll even be the first I view a second time.

One thing about HBO’s Rome that I found particularly intriguing was their take on Roman religion. Their video about it is worth a look.

It’s intriguing and detailed enough to have inspired some of my writings about Chaos Dwarfs, although of course fictional Dawi Zharr lifestyle and religion are very, very different from the Roman variant. Still, the different morality where cruelty isn’t necessarily evil and the constant presence of deities, sacrifices and superstitions in everyday life is a parallell to CDs.

So, this could be sort of an inspiration source for those in need of one for future Scribe’s Contests.

Awesome series, one of my all-time favourites.

These ancient perspectives are still very much alive, in actuality the global majority live in spiritual realities much in contrast with western secular thinking. Clans, families, tribes, bloodlines, casts/hierarchies etc. are also still the global norm even if human rights have had it’s impact on the old ways. :hashut

One of my all time favorite series!

Zanthrax:

Agreed - one of the best series I have seen

One of those I’ve even considered buying. And I don’t buy stuff.

:hat off

Having just moved I'm so happy I've been too cheap to buy a number if things I've thought about.
The other problem is I just don't bother watching it afterwards. Have huge issues getting around to watch stuff "later".

We’ll have to ask Fuggit Khan for advice. He’s re-watched Rome 3-4 times now if I remember correctly!

By the way, which actors did people like best? There was a lot of convincing acting in the show, not least in Lucius Vorenus’ and Posca’s cases. The one doing the acting for Caesar also springs to mind. Atia could also be included, although the real woman with that name was far from the character portrayed in the series. Octavianus was more convincing with the first actor.

The gold winner to my mind would however be Purefoy acting as Mark Antony. It’s perhaps not the most convincing/realistic acting, but damn is it enjoyable. Something of the sort could perhaps be said for Titus Pullo as well.

You have an excellent memory!
It's money well spent, I'm actually watching it again now for the 5th time. I keep seeing new things, such as characters expressions in the background, scenery and sets details, costumes, etc.
Plus the DVD set has some nice artwork and a really interesting 'making of' documentary that shows the work that went in to making the sets, building, costumes, etc.
My two favorite actors would be the dual combo of Caesar and Marc Antony. They work so well together that both were hired to play similar roles as the Leader and General of Helium Prime for John Carter Warlord of Mars.

PhilmacFLy:

I loved the Series aswell as the awesome Main Theme.
I at least watched it 3-4 times.

Admiral:

Yeah, the music is really sweet. Including the intro.

torn:

I also enjoyed it. I think pullo was the best but the young nephew of ceasar was a pretty cool character as well. Definately a better show than spartacus.

Mivrash Faz:

I agree with what’s been said by everyone. I think I’ve seen it at least 3 times. My favourite scene(s) are the beginning of the series when they are fighting the Gauls, and later on in the first season when Pullo gets into a bit of bother and Vorenus has to help him (not to give anything away). Brilliant series!
