So it strikes me that there’s loads of 40/30k fans out there who must be in bands of some sort. I wonder if anyone has ever thought of either telling the whole horus heresy in rock or been inspired by it?
Crazy idea, or not so much?

Not crazy at all, it’s a good idea. I don’t know if anyone has attempted this for Horus Heresy, but Blind Guardian did this for JRR Tolkien’s life’s work, the Silmarillion, in their album Nightfall (not the best of music, but many of the songs click and make a lot of sense if you’ve read the book). Singing about that epic story give it a new dimension of life, which it rarely had in writ form since it’s such a compressed literary work, and wooden at that. Given how Horus Heresy also is an epic story with many story lines going on, tackling it in heavy metal should work well, and it would probably make the story more comprehensible just like Blind Guardian managed to do with some Silmarillion bits in their songs.

@Skink: Indeed! I’ve got the CDs home here, and they’re marvellous pieces of music. Quality songs for quality stories.
Singing has always been a working way to tell stories, and it works in every genre of story and music if done well. It would be very interesting to have a good suite of Horus Heresy stories sung.

I could always put in a word to Dave Ingram of Bolt Thrower and Down Among the Dead Men, see if he’ll do something, Down Among the Dead Men’s debut and second album are all based on Doctor Who and a character from the Virgin Doctor Who books - Bernice Summerfield, so quite obscure sci fi references

I’ve been listening to some Sabaton and that sort of silly epic rock seems perfect for telling a horus heresy story.
Dînadan:
Pity Christopher Lee is dead, I’m sure he could have pulled something epic off

GW used to have their own record labe. They did a Warhammer album once, I believe Bolt Thrower was one of the bands featured heavily on it. It’s not conincidence a lot of their songs sound Warhammer/40k ish.
Grimstonefire:
They gave out a free CD with white dwarf 100 (UK) I think
