[Archive] Hexagonal & Diamond Scalemail Tutorials

Admiral:

In case someone ponders about sculpting hexagonal scalemail, here’s a tutorial to encourage you to make an attempt:

And diamond scalemail:

Bloodbeard:

Don’t get the last part fron the drawing and text.

Admiral:

Ah sorry. MS Paint isn’t the most inviting program to attempt any kind of 3d effect in, so I kept it most basic.

What is meant in the third stage is that you take your sculpting tool’s “scalpel” end, lay it flat on the green stuff and then push the pointy end up between the scales of the upper row, of course adjusting with the usual tiny movements as you go along to create a shape you’re satisfied with.

cornixt:

I amazed someone by doing “diamond” scale armour that way. Looks a bit like fish scales but is very quick. You basically just push the tip of a triangular sculpting tool into the putty in rows, starting at the top. The tip goes in deeper than the rest, making the row above look like it is overlapping the new row.

Fuggit Khan:

A nice tutorial…always interesting to see how other people come up with ways of doing stuff. I do something similar, but I skip the first step entirely…your way makes more sense, I’ll have to give it a go.

Thanks for sharing this :hat off

Bad Gram Northern:

great tutorial Admiral.

mind if I add to it?

the third step of this proces is easiest to do when you carve a new scultping tool out of a piece of plastic sprue, it’s surprisingly easy to do so.

I didn’t think off this myself, I got the idea from this tutioral: http://www.steamforged.com/sculpting-101-scaly-skin-and-leather/ (I made a “spitter” tool out of sprue)

Good additions to the tutorial, and good tips. Keep 'em coming if you can. :cheers
