Hi
I recently started to build a CD army and to date have posted a couple of posts. I now have I a dilemma that I need some help with.
To date I have bought a bunch of FW Infernal guard and I have bought a shed load of “old” CD with big-hats. Because I come into the realms of starting my CD army now, how do the Big-Hat guys fit in with the current CD army that FW produce. I have the Tamurkhan, and I get the allegiance with Tamurkhan, but where in all this do the Big-hat guys fit in.
I ask because I have spent sooooo much money on buying up these “old-school” models that there is no-way I can’t add them into my army. (despite the fact that they are not exactly the best models in the world. Especially the axe men guys).
Is there any fluff/ resource that would explain how the big hat dudes fit in with the current CD army, and if I am going to build up a decent sized army, where/ what should I be buying to understand the past history of the CD’s?
If it helps (which it wont!) I have about 50-60+ of these big hat dudes all unpainted, not to mention all the FW Infernal Guard and command guys that I have bought. I want to start painting them and post up pictures of where I am with them, but I don’t really understand how they all fit in with each other and what I should be aiming for to give my army cohesion (remembering that I am using both the FW and Big-hat guys).
Any help with all this would be really greatly appreciated.
Thanks In advance

Warhammer Forge has kind of bent over backwards to say that their models and rules aren’t ‘the’ Chaos Dwarfs - probably because they’ve been stung in the past by having their stuff superseded by newer releases from the main GW studio - hence all this “Legion of Azgorh” stuff. In other words, the new models are intended to be just a faction of Chaos Dwarfs based at the Black Fortress and don’t necessarily represent how the Chaos Dwarfs in general make war. Of course, you can use the list to represent Chaos Dwarf armies from elsewhere, but they’re just covering their asses in case the main GW studio decide to do their own version.
What this means for you is that your big hats can represent Chaos Dwarfs from Zharr-Naggrund rather than the Black Fortress, since the models WF have released are really just a faction of Chaos Dwarfs, and you’re still free to interpret the others as you see fit. They’ve kept their options open for just this sort of situation.

Fortunately Forgeworld have the good idea of having ironsworn in this list, So perhaps you can have the ironsworn represented by your big hats.

My initial thoughts (being an old helm and mask guy) was to equate big hats with big egos. That led to my big hats becoming my immortals or ironsworn etc, whatever I needed. It also led to the Big Hat heroes which with FW’s heroes having hats can make the theme fit in

I actually think it even says in Tamurkhan that the ‘normal’ CD warriors are hatted.
Zanthrax:
You could always add big hats to the FW dudes- I have found the plastic big hats are a little too large when I tried to fit them on my iron Daemon crew but maybe the metal big hats (if you can bring yourself to sawing them off the metal big hats) might fit better.
Either way a uniform colour and basing scheme would tie them all together nicely since our boys all go the same barber whether they are big hats or FW.

Please, please… No more suggestions about butchering of old models. More so lets all foster the make your own point of view
