[Archive] Hobgoblin Head Project: Passing the torch - selling the mould! [2/13-15]

Zanthrax:

Would be cool if the mongol heads could replace the heads on the fireforge mongol plastics

Admiral:

Maybe I'll get around to it someday or maybe I'll take the easy way out and buy yours ;)

JMR
Lazyman's way out is the fast way out. I'd have bought heads myself had there been any. ;P

For that I'd need some of those plastics in my hand in order to get a good fit. I'll ask Bloodbeard about it if and when it's time for Mongols.

Bloodbeard:

I’m gonna use the Fireforge Mongols for both infantry and wolf raiders. So I’ll get around to buying a couple of packs - some time in the future. But I got loads of dwarfs that needs to be done first.

I’ll write fireforge and see if i can get a picture taken besides a couple og GW miniatures - for size comparison.

I'm hoping to get a box of the Fireforge Mongol light cav from Salute to convert into hobgoblin wolf riders so should be able to take some pics of them next to GW stuff some time next week ;)

@Bloodbeard: Good call!

That’d be much appreciated!

If the first Phrygian headgear venture proves succesful (makes it through casting and all that) any help and demand from the community will be decisive in getting a Mongol Hobgoblin head kit done. :hat off

Besides, eyes and small teeth are all done now, bar some possible future remakes if necessary. Eyepatch, eye-covering bandage and fake nose are all freshly drying on my desk. I’m bidding for a good camera on Swedish Ebay and getting my dad to enlist a colleague of his to get a scanner up and running properly in the coming days, so with any luck you’ll get frequent updates and ample opportunity to influence the outcome of this project. Don’t be shy!

Edit: First measurement update online. Last of the blunt pictures, I believe, because next we’ll move into detail fields.

Have posted pics of the mongol sprues next to a GW Hobbo in my blog - http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=13721&pid=234368#pid234368

Admiral:

Much appreciated shots.

Update time! The first semi decent scan have arrived. This is where we stand at the moment.

Should a leader/champion head with bigger hat and horns be included in the kit?

MadHatter:

Great project! If they fit in well with the 4th ed. hobgoblins ill need about 40

I for one would love that

torn:

I would say to make this kit really good you should consider doing 2 things.

Make the pack 11 heads, 10 normal and 1 champion. That way you are re using you champion head.

As well as heads offer some hands holding hobgoblin knives. The firgeforl Mongol clothing is OK but the weapons are miles away from the wicked blades hobgoblins like to stab each other in the back with.

I would happily pay £10 for 11 heads and 20 hands, and I would probably do that twice.

Just as a curiosity what kit are you incensing as a good base for hobgoblin conversions?

Admiral:

@MadHatter: I’m pretty sure they will. Be sure to keep an eye on my log and critizise or come with ideas of your own. I’m open for community ideas. In fact they have already steered me in new directions!

Excellent proposal on the champion head. You win, that’s the best compromise. Making one more head wouldn’t be much of a hassle to me.

I thought about hands earlier but originally decided to keep the kit small. Part of the reason is my inexperience with sculpting, especially protruding objects and in particular blades and claws or teeth.

I might try to sculpt some hands, but I’m sure the number will be small, perhaps 5 (2 left, 3 right-handed). This could maybe be multiplied by the Danish caster for the kit or sold separately, it’s for them to decide. We’ll have some internal talks about it, but only if I manage to sculpt knife hands with weapons in the first place!

It’s fiddly, but shouldn’t be impossible.

I haven’t really decided on bodies for my future Hobgoblin conversions. They’re not to be done soon regardless of the speed I get the heads in my hands. I’ve seen a lot of cool Stormvermin versions with other heads, but those Fireforge Mongols look tempting. I guess you guys’ results will decide it for me. :hat off

EDIT: After some talk with Bloodbeard it seem a “dangerous” thing to try to make hands, mainly because they might not be entirely compatible with whatever kit people convert their Hobgoblins from, due to size or claws/no claws on hands. I think it should be easy enough for people to weapon swap knives or improvise them (Dark Elf spear tips e.g.). We’ll think on the matter some more and listen to overall demand for knife hands before taking the final decision.

snowblizz:

I was going to mention exactly that re: hands.

I think heads are a priority in that they are difficult to source. Arms and hands you can get from lots of Warhammer kits already. Most probably whatever you base the body on.

Kera foehunter:

Nope i made my own undead pirate hobgoblin and regular hobgoblin Because everyone else sucked

kinda harsh but true

kers

Admiral:

Alright folks, the sculpting is completed this evening.

Do you like the kit? Let’s hope we’re able to get 'em cast.

If you wouldn’t buy Phrygian hat Hobgoblin heads, would you buy a conversion kit with Mongol-style heads instead?

Yes. I need mongol helmets for hobgoblins. Ever since the Regiments of Renown that's been the way.

gIL^:

I would be happy to get some of these,

snowblizz:

Most definitely interested in these. Damn those look nice. Would most likely be interested in the Mongol variants too.

Admiral:

Nice! We won’t make any profit out of it, but it’s something of a favour to our own collections, a community service and also a start for sculpting-casting ventures. Who knows where it could lead?

Prices will be set to recoup Bloodbeard’s material costs.

I’ll have to say this at once, though: I’ll most likely start with the Mongol-style heads no sooner than in some months’ time. Because I’ve promised to help my brother with his Elves. On the other hand I’ll try to sculpt an elven BSB, and though not that interesting for Chaos Dwarf circles I could maybe get Bloodbeard or someone else to cast and sell it, if it turns out good enough and castable.

Watch Bloodbeard’s log for Hobgoblin head project updates on mouldmaking and casting in the future.

Admiral:

Ad-hoc question.

Aromat:

After this post i stopped my stormvermin project… Waiting for u guys to cast the hads
