I’ll be handling the casting part of the project. A friend of mine has done some really great resin casting, and he’ll help me with the project.
But it’ll be some time before the casting can start. My friend is currently travelling a lot, since he’s financial boss in a large company. And I’m on the verge of becoming a dad.
So the minute there is an opening we’ll get started.
Regarding price
Dunno what the price will be. Will now when the first castings have been done. But my friend said the following:
"It’s great for making rare bits, you save money on making your own plamaguns, meltas and the like. But it would be a bad deal to resin cast lasguns and bolters."
Those heads are really nice. Will buy at least one set even if I have no idea what to put them on, as the Hobgoblin cloths are distinctive as well.
Maybe a set of 2 mounted Khans and 5 Hobgoblin wolf riders next (e.g. fitting GW Fenris wolves), after your elf involvement? Seems like a smaller project than a whole regiment.

That's a good idea. :cheers
It might be a bit hard to find suitable mounted bodies for Hobgobbo conversions, so why not? I won't promise anything yet. If nothing else I might be too much of an amateur to get it right, but I promise to consider it!
It will take a long while to get there, because besides work, studies and workshop time for my own collection I'll also sculpt some pieces for MadHatter's future webshop, including a much more Daemonic and detailed asscannon.
On the other hand I'm probably too much of an amateur to already sculpt a multipart Elven hero for my brother (and possible buyers), so to get there I'll have to practice on... Hobgobbos. ;)
The original plan for me was to visit a friend in Copenhagen who has casting experience. Yet he’s the boss of sales in a large company and travels a lot, and I had a baby too early. I’ve looked at the calender and we can’t find a casting date in the foreseeable future.
Therefore I have decided to try this out from tutorials and email guidance only. I’ve written Clam for some guides, I know he has done this before.
So the project is on the way and I’m currently trying to find the right place to buy materials.
After that it’s trial and error. Trying to cast something else than the heads first - to not mess them up.
Thank you very much for this, Bloodbeard! Be careful with mouldmaking for the heads, please. Even though your friend believed otherwise, I still think that the ear areas might be a danger zone.
If the heads can get cast succesfully, then let’s hope they’re not too big. If they are, it might be advisible to cast them in metal instead of resin. I’m not in the know-how, but I imagine metal shrinks more than resin when it cools in the mould. MadHatter have an expensive metal casting kit in his possession.
But if they work all well in resin, then great!
The number of interested hobbyists have grown over the months, seemingly without pause. That’s great, so fingers crossed everyone can get their dozens of Hobgoblin heads.
I voted undecided, but if they turn out good I might buy more than a few of them… Id like some pics for size reference, a comparison with a few other heads. And maybe the most common conversions, your head on a shaven/gobbo etc.

We'll try to get size comparisons and blu-tacs up once the heads are cast. In my little hobby group it might be difficult to find headless bodies ready for conversions or blu-tac, but I'll try to find some nevertheless.

Exactly my thoughts. Do heads fit on storm vernim bodys?

That's a crucial point. We'll see once the heads have been cast (unless Bloodbeard happens to have some Stormvermin bodies to borrow from mates). I might be able to borrow Stormvermin bodies from a friend of mine if we're lucky. If nothing else, my plan is also to mount the heads on Stormvermin bodies!
Don't have any high expectations here, I'm only an amateur sculptor. Still, fingers crossed and thumbs held. :)
Good luck, cant wait to see them ready. I got some experience in casting and I think resin shoulnd’t make problem. Although I agree that ears will be crucial element.
Got an answer from a guy a DWR Plastics, they sell all the stuff needed for casting. They have had a very busy week, but he promised me an extensive shopping list, tips, tricks and advice on the head project - and he’ll try to write it during this weekend. With any luck, materials for casting will be ordered early next week.
After being in contact with numerous companies that sells supplies for casting, I have now made a deal with Donny at DWR Plastics. He’s offered to make a mould and a test casting of everyhead, for quality control. This is great - as the molds are being made by a man who does this for a living. And I won’t get stuck with a ton of excess mould making materials, he offer on price is also fair. And combined with shipping costs and cost of resin, we should be able to make a fair price on heads.
Depending on the postal service, he hopes to send a completed mold, resin and first batch of heads back to me before the 30. of september. At that time I’ll now the complete expenses for this part of the project - and will set a price to break even at 500 heads sold to other people.
If anyone has a spare storm vermin, they’ll donate to the project, this would be nice. He’ll be used for a size picture. He’ll be returned to the donater with a hobgoblin head if wanted. Besides that I’ll stick a head on a regular goblin, a marauder and a flaggalant (as these are the miniatures I have available now). Any other wishes for size test miniatures, please post them here.
