[Archive] Hobgoblin Head Project: Passing the torch - selling the mould! [2/13-15]

Malorndk:

Great work! Well done!

Bloodbeard:

thats good news man! I dont have any stormvermin but i do have skaven slaves if you want one of those

iamahobgoblin
Thanks, but no thanks. I just ordered a single storm vermin from a bits store. Will simply use him as a Khan on foot.
Please let this work on marauders, I've got tons...
Great job!

MadHatter
I have absolutely no doubt that the heads will work on the marauder bodies - as the marauders are pretty big.

I'm more worried if they'll look too big on flaggelant bodies. But I've build hoboblins for blood bowl with both gnoblar and goblin headas on flaggelants - and those work fine. Admirals hogoblin heads are roughly the same size as goblin heads.

tjub:

Great work so far you guys, I have high hopes for this! Roughly what will the price be for a head if bought as a bulk of say 50 or 100?

Currently no idea, as I don't yet know the price on resin, amount of heads to make on a bottle, an return shipping of moulds/resin. The last one is a joker an will properly be rather expensive due to weight, and shipping from UK.

But price will be kept to a minimum. The  math is as follows:

(combined cost: resin+mould making+shipping+other needed tools) devided by / (500 heads for sale) = minimum price pr head.

Hopefully that be a low enough price. As the expected life of the mold is 50 castings = 600 heads in total. That leaves 50 for me and 50 for Admiral.

Other thought I have when determening final price: Discounts for many heads bought, earn money for new moulds/other casting projects, if it turns out very time consuming I'll also need to earn a bit. As there is a limit to my hobby time and thus the amount of hobby time I want to spend freely for other people.

Bloodbeard:

The heads are on the way to the mold maker, they were posted sunday. I’m sitting here trying to do a little business math. And for this I would like to have some input from the potential buyers.

Let’s asume the quality is equal to / or almost equal to the conversion heads from other sellers (i’ve ordered the highest quality resin) and the heads fit your prefered miniature.

What would be an acceptable price for you?

That’s a price pr. head. And let’s say price pr. set of 12 heads (as there are 12 different types)?

A better way to ask is actually - what would you pay?
I’m thinking everybody will be buying at least 20, because that’s the minimum in a regiment of hobgoblins. Then we could perhaps try and make some kind of price reduction at large buys. Let’s say if one would buy 50 heads, that there is some discount. Most people I guess would need ca 40 for a horde, perhaps some for khan conversions.

What would an acceptabel price by for 50 heads (considering discount)?

The price on the interwebs is something like:
Kromlech = 0,7 eur pr head
Maxmini = 0,7 eur pr head
Puppets War = 0,6 eur pr head
Spellcrow = 0,8 eur pr head

And please consider that the above set only contain 5 different pieces, aposed to Admirals 12 sculpts.

Shipping in the EU would be 3 euros or less. Shipping to the rest of the world is 4 euro. At 100 grams - which should be more than enough. And that’s of cause postage, without insurance.

Looking forward to hearing your input.

Malorndk:

If they look good and have the right size I don’t care about the prize.

Doombeard:

I echo Mal price doesn’t matter too much to me it is what it is.

Its hard for anyone to say until they’ve seen them cast and stuck onto plague monks or Stormvermin though. I’m in the UK and I’m happy to help if you want to speed up the process of getting some mock ups done.

If you are just looking for a rough estimate I could say I’d want about 100 if I like the sizes but more like 20 if they are too big, but I need to see their size first. I don’t like gretchin / 6th ed nightgoblin sizes they are too big for me.

Admiral:

If you can keep the price per head roughly about the level from other producers without making losses, everyone should be fine. I’m sure you’ll figure out a good way to do it, including discounts for large batches. Most interested people will just accept the price for what it is, if it isn’t ridiculously high, and buy because they like the product.

Twisted Dwarf:

I’ll take 100. I’m in desperate need for these. Name your price good sir!

snowblizz:

Serious question. If you run out of the first 500 (600) heads… what then?

Admiral:

@Twisted Dwarf: Woah, wait around for a while longer and both price and heads will show up if all goes well.

@snowblizz: If I’ve understood things correctly, then a new mould will be made when that happens. Business as usual in the casting industry. The first 500/600 heads will run out quickly if my rough list of interested persons is any guide. One guy over on Warseer even said he’d start a Hobgoblin army just for the sake of those heads.

Bloodbeard:

As part of my break even calculation is included the cost of a new mold. That way I'll just make heads untill the market is satisfied.

As of a time frame for production: I have no time frame. Don't know how quick casting is and how fast I'll make it. But when time comes, I'll make a list with names and orders. End woek from top down.

It's my hope that all get the heads they need.

snowblizz:

Eeeexcellent…

I have not committed to a number but I’ll have to admit I’m leaning towards a substantial number.

This may be the push I need to decide on/finish off some Hobbos.

Admiral:

Please wait for the size comparison pictures before committing yourself, though. That way you can judge for yourself which bodies the slightly big heads goes along with.

snowblizz:

Oh, I don’t commit to nothing. The idea of using Skaven bodies led to a full Skaven army…

Doombeard:

Admiral didn’t you do any size comparison pics in your ‘making of’ thread? Swear I saw a ruler in there somewhere or something

Yes, and I tried to keep to the measurements that I was given green light for, so to speak. That is, circa 1 cm from chin to forehead. However, the problem was that I had no heads or useful bodies whatsoever available when sculpting (whether by borrowing or from our own collections), which is why the ruler was essential. I would have had lots, had not a mate of mine moved to another town recently. :h

Using Dwarf, Elf, 40k or Lotr bodies or heads wouldn't have been useful for size comparison, but that was all that was available.

The heads seemed big when I had finished with them, but then again the Goblin heads in GW's plastic kit also does, so it could work fine.

Because of this, and because I'm just an amateur sculptor who's only beginning to get to grips with symmetry, same-sizing and scale, Bloodbeard's upcoming comparison shots will be essential for everyone to decide which bodies the heads can go on, or if they want the heads at all.

My brother thought the heads' size are OK. My guess is that the heads will look decent enough on Stormvermin and Plaguemonk bodies, or even Marauders if you want hulk Hobgobbos.

So, fingers crossed. The next bunch of heads (with Mongol headwear) will be a tiny bit smaller when I get around to sculpting them. :hat off

torn:

I want 40 or so, price wise im not on euro conversion rates but roughly £25 for 4 sets of 12 would be nice.

edit: I have just realised the major failing in scotland voting no in the referendun. Mymother in law lives in scotland, an hours dive from me. I could get my stuff from europe posted there VAT free if they werent part of the UK. Doh!

I can tell you from a vast personal experience that A) it's not that easy and B) it's not worth it.

Onyx:

If I’m not vastly mistaken the European Union is already a free trade area. UK is a part of the European Union.

I assume Scotland would have remained a part of the EU? Then nothing would have changed.
