Singleton Mosby:
Since I started with my Chaos Dwarf army (eh…about three weeks ago ;)) I’ve been toying with the idea of creating Winkie guard models as Hobgoblins instead of the obligatory elongated goblins. With no previous experience with Greenstuff and almost no experience with conversions I set to work and made my first winkie prototype.
For thos who have no idea what Winkie guards are: they are the bodygaurd of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz movie.
I set out looking for some good models to base the protype on. In my Bretonnia collection I found this unused standard bearer. I had never used him as he’s kinda ‘elfish’. I think he is original GW, probably 3rd edition or something.
First thing I did was cut off the arm with the sword as I needed the space for the skirt/coat. I reatached the arm at a better angle with the sword upwards instead of downwards. The sword was badly mangled however. I decided to keep the flag and not make it into a spear. Cut away some additional stuff from the back of the model to make him a little slimmer and then went off with the Greenstuff.
It took me a while to get into it but I sort of managed. First the three layers of the skirt, then the chainmail on the arms, the strips on the upper arms and the back and the fur-hat. Followed by the details.
I decided to clip away the entire swordblade and replace it with a goblin one.
Here’s the green:
I am not unsattisfied with it for a first go at GS-ing. Yes, it could be smoother (especially the lower skirt) and detail could be better but as part of a large unit… It ook me quite a while though and creating a 40 men unit of these will take months. Next to that I would like to make a dozen wolfriders as well and as I am onto it keep on going with a small unit of flying monkeys as well ;). Plans…
Well, as the base for the first 16 of them I’ve ordered a unit of Dark Elf spearmen. their spears are a perfect match and they already have the lower skirt so that would make it a little bit easier.
