So the CD army is for sale and Ive started on my other projects. First one i some Wood elfs. 15 guards, 20 scouts and 10 waythingies
The guy who wanted me to paint them had some models and he wanted to have them painted excactly alike. The only problem was, that he hadent painted any of them himself, so it was up to me findning the colors. This proved to be something of a task, but I think I succeded. The theme had thus all ready been decided, and I did my best to mimic it. Pictures will be uploaded tommorow
The colors were brigter than I was use to, and I had to get used to that. Another was, that the capes had allready been glued on, so it was really heard for me to get to the back of the model. Moreover it was hard for me to figure out which garments was which. I think that if I had choosen the colors it would have been more simplicit. There are to many colors on here for my taste, which also makes it look a bit confusing, but Im satisfied with the result over all.
From the right: a scout - more dark in the coloring, a guard - more bright, and then the original I was sended along for me to see what coloring it had. Im pretty satisfied with the result. I proberably would have gone with a more monotone coloring, as I find the 3 coloring of the clothing a bit confusing, but I think I delivered what he asked for.
Then there is the waythingies. Thoose turned out pretty good I must say.
Lastly there is my Iron deamon conversion witch I absolutely love !
Have you added at least a tera bit of data to the internet? No? Then this and other blogs ain’t finished yet. Of cause you should keep it alive.
I’m not a fan of the “dirty” look of the elves. I can’t really see if the colour ain’t covering the basecoat completely, if it’s heavy drybrush/wash or a mix…
I my book elves has to be “clean” and “sharp”. Though you can of cause still use wash and drybrush. It’s a bit hard to describe.
When I look out the window at an autumn tree (right now) I see green, yellow, orange. So that’s great colour for a wood elf army. But the colours are strong and sharp - not washed out.
Keep up the good work. It’s comission work right? Do you feel that pay/work time is worth it? A guy on Powerfist asked me to build him a Hellcannon. But looking at the time it would take and the price that would seem fair - it doesn’t end up being a good deal for me. Compared to the fact that I don’t haave unlimited hobby time.
I was just in doubt if theese blogs were followed, as the cd blogs are, but good to know
Some of the elves - the scouts - have a heavy wash with a bit of highlighting. This was on demand. He wanted the same colors, but much darker, so that they were more stalker like.
The guards are much more bright:
It is commision work. I took about 237,5 dollars for this. This was including return postage and paint. Minus the paint and postage I have about 172 dollars left in profit. That means I have been working for about 4,5 dollars pr hour spent. Not a great hour wage I must admit. Once I found the colors it went pretty fast tough. My biggest ament was the fact that he dident know what colors to use and that the capes had all ready been glued on. I spent hours, proberably about 8, figuering out what green it was, and had to buy 2-3 greens, before I found a mix that was about right - not spot on though. If I had to do it over, I would proberably settle on a price and then add the paint prices and the postage - x+paint+postage. The reason is, that he wanted me to buy even more greens, to try to find the right one. This hadent been a problem if he paied the whole thing in the end, but as I had asked for a total price, every paint was out of my profit, and buying alot of the same shades, as he dident know what kind there had been used, was just a little bit too expensive imo.
The fact that the capes was all ready glued on, made it hard to reach the bag, and paint in double layers as the orange had to be painted 2-3 times to cover the base paint.
My advice is - if you dont need the money and dont have the time or other projects, dont do it. I do it because I have the time, needs the money and are first starting on my next projects some time next month. If you are a pro painter I would proberably do it for a much steeper price, but my painting level isn’t high enough for me to take more money that I did.
If I was you, I would proberably make up my mind about an hour wage, that is what Im going to do next time Im asked for commision work (proberably the same guy), figuring around 8 dollars, then make him a ballpark price, and then ask him to supply the paint, add a little for usage on pensils, and then make him a sugestion.
Working for 4,5 dollars an hour is too little for me, if I am to do it again. But then again, now that I know the colors, and if the capes aren’t glued on when I get them, it will go much faster. My price wasen’t wrong but some of the presupsitions was.
Ive been having some personal problems and dont think im going to be posting here anymore. Im glad for the time I spent, but I have to figure out some things. Hope your community will thrive!
