I love the Chaos Dwarf idea and the customisation available as conversion is highly important.
How should I start a collection of Chaos Dwarfs? I have the Battle for Skull Pass box set already. What should I add to make a small force and what is a decent roster for around $200 AUD?
Well to start with make sure you have copies of the rulebook (ahem… 2 page pdf file) and possibly a 7th ed Orcs and gobbos book. BfSP already has 7th ed rules so your all set there.
Your in Oz so find a good supplier of Green stuff (or kneadatite) from a supplier (pm me if you want a few sites to check out). Start with core units… Warriors with hand weapon and shield to start with. Blunderbusses are also core… hobgobs are core too but do not count towards min units and you have a heap of night gobbos from BfSP that can be used.
Go to the modeling section and steal as many cool ideas as you can (you can give credit to whomever deserves it as you go in you own blog). From the core units move on to whatever units grab your imagination, again read up about tactics on the board, usually a few good characters are in order.
Well that is a start… I found podhammer ep 6?? (I think) was a great start to getting my head around using Chaos Dwarfs in 7th edition… though the wonderful Chaos Dwarf Radio has some great info as well.
Either the warriors or blunderbuss. Seeing as you’ll have one or the other (often both) in every army… they’re a good place to start.
Also try some theory hammer out. If you’re fairly familiar with the rules, try out some scenarios against the armies you face quite a bit. Get a feel for how you might want to field for your army.
BfSP is a good start. Try to use everything you can out of it.
One thing to make easy Blunderbuss conversions, try getting some tubular rivets from a hardware store. They’re cheap and if you cut off the aiming sight at the end of the barrel should just slide right on. A tiny bit of green stuff to give it a more cone shape and you’re good to go.
* 8 Dwarf Miners (8 Chaos Dwarfs Warriors with GWs)
* Dwarf Cannon & Crew (Dwarf Cannon into a Death Rocket, extra crew into a Sorcerer)
Goblins
* 40 Night Goblin Spearmen (20x2 Units of Hobgoblins, replace the spear with a handweapon)
* 20 Night Goblin Archers (Wolfriders*)
*Buy a box or two of plastic Chaos Hounds, carve out a groove between the legs of the Archers, and place them atop the hounds! Voila, Hobgoblin Wolfriders.
Next you want to beef up your Core units. You can either do this with individual boxes of Dwarf Warriors, Thunders, and Miners, or grab a Dwarf Battalion. If you Like Grudge Pony Bull Centaurs, then each box of 10 Miners will give you two ponies to play with. The only thing that can’t be purchased right off the shelf for easy conversion are your warmachines. Bolt Throwers are fairly easy to scratch build and can be crewed by BFSP Goblins. A Death Rocket can be made from the BFSP Cannon with some modelling work. You definitely want an Earthshaker, some people use converted Hellcannons, but these can be scratch built as well.
The most important thing is to have fun! Modelling a complete army can be daunting, but I like to think of how far my modelling skills have come since I began my journey with Chaos Dwarfs!

Could you not widen out the ends with a 30% Rosebud Countersink tool?
@Mike ~ Xander's and Cornixt's list are very good. It's what most people use at the begining to convert and seems to be the core results of conversions from BFSP.
The "Extra Crew" member he's talking about is the guy holding the cannon ball which can have the back emblem filled in, smoothed off, and painted to look like a crystal ball.
The Dragon Slayer can be converted into a fire wizard or as a Chaos Dwarf Hero as heroes can also carry 2 weapons. Look around in the Galleries to get ideas.
But for a start, try making an entry for the Golden Hat VIII contest. It's on Warmachines and you can find the info on the main page.
but in my case i am in a position with very little funds. so if on a tight budget where do you think the best place to start would be?
i have got the avatar of war dwarf lord of chaos so i think the hero is sorted for the moment until i can fashion my own one. would it be worth buying some of the smaller box sets first? instead of BfSP that is.
sorry just very new to the ideas so trying to get a firm plan set in my head.
ps sorry for putting my questions on this thread mikel2495 but thought it would be easier than making a new thread entirely Cheers
Thats OK allanp, it’s for the better, as you said it’s saves another thread asking the same question. To both allan and Mikel, for anything to do with the bfsp set all you need to follow is one simple rule… listen to Xander. Bfsp and warhounds are under a $200 right? :~
If it’s a bit out of your price range you could get a few quid off using sites like Maelstrom or Gifts for Geeks, the set will give a huge bulk of your army and in the long run would work out cheaper than buying bits individually, Avatars of War hero is the best start you can get off to I have to say :hat off
Allanp - the best value for the money is BFSP. I’m only saying that, as a hobby retailer, because you get 100 figures for $75 (Canadian) and you won’t find this ammount in the regular $45 (Canadian) box of warriors. In those boxes, you get 16 guys at the max (At least for Dwarfs).
(I don’t know what country you’re in, but most of the GW stores are in a simular price range. However, shop around for a better deal, if you can find one. )
Also, 1 BFSP set and a pack of Green Stuff will be more than enough to convert all these guys. At the end of the day, a BFSP box will give you a complete army, ready to fight instead of 1 unit of guys that don’t meet the minimum 500 point cost to begin to play a game.
Also, BFSP comes with the rules, rulers and dice, readying you for a game, whereas, to try and match the ammount of mini’s in BFSP with individual units, not to mention buiing the dice, ruler and complete rule book…well, you’d be easily 3 times the price of a BFSP set.
Therefore, the best advice is to just save your money a little longer and get a BFSP set.
(Ghrask Dragh beat me to this answer by a few seconds.)
thanks guys. i remember i did o for the set when it first came out
unfortunatly i went halves witha dwarf player as i did not know bout this resource at the time and wasnt up for collecting basic dwarfs. if only hob goblins went towards basic core units argggh . ha ha oh well
so it is settled then. looks like i will be waiting a while to find some money
thanks for the help. oh and to put it out there any dwarfs you dont want … ha ha
hmmm good point. i will keep vigil. are there any other sites that i should be looking at. i am taking ebay as the sort of mainstay site but i was just wondering if there were others that might be worth watching
Check Ebay for loose BFSP figures. I’ve found some that only cost $3.00 for units of BFSP Dwarfs. A.K.A - Miners all 8 for $3.00.
Also, sometimes certain GW stores have a free “Take home and paint” figure. I got a BFSP Dwarf out of it. Turned him into a Lord with a Crossbow. One of my best!
It’s also good to just ask around your local hobby scene for people who have BFSP dwarfs they aren’t using. Many people bought the set for the rulebook.

I'm not sure where you are, but the OP is from Australia, so he (or possibly you) could check out TradeMe, which is a New Zealand based eBay-type site, but which seems to be used by quite a few Australians.
thanks guys. you have been a huge help. hopefully with everything going well i should be able to make a start or at least have a go at conversion to get some ideas out there.
thanks wallacer but unfortunatly i live in england and study in wales. but still worth keeping an eye out to see what kind of prices i should be expecting. thank you cheers
