Just remembered a trick I used to use - tightly wound paper. It’s hard to start it, but once you do you just keep rolling until the tube is the right thickness. Cut it off there and glue it down, then lightly file the paper edge to hide it.
Paper rolled into a tube like this is pretty strong, and has a hole all the way through for pinning.
