[Archive] How to paint old school blue trolls

Mosk:

I have a ton of BFSP trolls (I can run two 24 troll hoards… and I still have more…) and I want them painted. I want them painted up like the old school orcs and goblin trolls that were blue but I don’t know how to do this? I am also not a good painter so does any one have a fairly good tutorial on how to paint up old school blue trolls?

Bassman:

This is mine:

Not actually blue…

I used old classic highlights and shading techiniques but now I’d do it with washes.
I’m actually painting some blue Lizardmen so I can suggest you Asurmen blue wash. It’s realy good for blue skin. It’s also very fast, and that’s good if you have 24 trolls!!!

Mosk:

I just counted. I have 57 trolls. 43 of them are from bfsp. But I love your troll. Super sexy my friend. I love that you used an old school head. I am tempted to get one and duplicate the head and put it on some of my trolls

Bassman:

57?!?! Holy Hashut, you love trolls!

Well, I always prefered 5th edition old trolls to the new ones, so when I got mine from Bfsp… I sculpted him a nice old skool face

Yes, you did not know but you made a me a compliment. Actually the face is NOT an old school face but a sculpt of mine

Crikey,57! I’ve been dithering about my paltry 7.  Are you going to hand-paint the base colour or use a spray gun or one of those pre-coloured primer cans from Army Painter?

JonJon:

TRy this

black base ,denab stone blue ink

dry brush on the stone then ink,let the base blase dry one day

Doombeard:

the stone troll bodies had a lot more detail than the bfsp ones. they had nice big scales on the back that would respond really well to layering up with drybrushing and a final highlight round the edge of each scale. i used to paint the entire model dark blue. then drybrush the hell out of it being very slap dash and heavy handed, the only thing i concentrated on was adding a little more lighter shade to the blue each coat so i had a progressivly lighter drybrush coat each time but very light. i used to go from a dark blue to something like enchanted blue with a bit of grey in about 10 variations of mixes just getting a bit lighter each time. once the whole model was drybrushed i would then worry about the soft smooth flesh on their bellys which was always a more grey kinda colour. its all about the contrast of the dark blue big huge dinosaur type scales with the smooth light greyey-bluey babys skin on their bellys.

hey you have enough to practice on and do a few test goes so your lucky
