[Archive] How to use the Chalice?

timurbannipal:

Blessings of Hashut upon you, be ye tall of hat, masked of face or the other ones!

Ok, so I’ve been reading on the Forums and talking to other players who get really upset by the chalice. I just don’t see how it’s so awesome. I’m aware I’m probably doing it wrong, but I always seem to take away 3 of my dice and 1 or 2 of the enemies, it’s very frustrating. Can you guys give me some pointers on getting the most out of it? because with all the High magic and Doomfire Warlocks around at the moment I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to find out!

Cheers

Thread also contains a lot of tactics.

Basically:
Can be used at any time during the magic phase.

In your turn - use after you use last power dice, so you'll only steal dispel dice. Leaving your opponent defenceless.

In opponents turn - dispel his stuff. And when you're out of dice, steal his remaining power dice.

Yodrin:

Bloodbeard is right, ANY time in the magic phase, but it will not get you any friends playing it like that though;)

timurbannipal:

I would never have thought to use it that way, but I can’t believe they say it was ‘intended’ to be used that way (as on the FB page. Do these clowns even play the game?!

Heh. FW is more about churning out spectacular miniatures and background books rather than the sharpest rules. They're not games developers, and it shows. Still, I think they've done reasonably well despite some warts.

When we asked them this question back when the book was released the answer was something along the lines of "play it as written, but it was not intented for it to be played this way".

Some how over the last couple of years they have changed their opinion and have written it is "intended" to be used the way it was written.

I think ultimatley they designed it not thinking people would play it at any point in the phase. And in 2012 (I believe) they decided that this was what they intended anyways :)

Bloodbeard:

Been using the Chalice this way in four games. And it is a fun magic item, worth the points, and it haven’t been a game braker in any way.

It’s jusy been a fun addition to the magic phase. My opponents have thought the same - we allways evaluate our games.

Book of Hoeth on a lore master had a bigger impact the games.

If you don’t use the item as above - it is just useless.

hypnotix:

An item that allows you to cast Purple Sun every turn, mostly without treat it beeing disspelled , is a game braker for sure.

Xx9millxX:

Is it hated on so much because it’s not one use only? Or is it ? IMO if it’s one use only it would be a cool game breaking item to turn the tides in your favor or seal the victory …

I suppose it can be used as many times in the game as you want though and that’s why people don’t make/lose friends?

Hashut’s Blessing:

timurbannipal: Also, don;t forget, you roll 1D3 and lose that many dice from EACH pool - not roll 1D3 for each pool and lose that many dice.

EDIT: THAT WAS WRONG! DO NOT PAY ATTENTION HERE!

(Sodding sneaky gitz stealing my password. Greenskin uprising slaughtered…)

TheFNG:

No that’s wrong Hashut. You roll two dice. One for you and one for your opponent declaring each before rolling. Otherwise you couldn’t roll a double one or double six and lose/gain a wound.

mhm:)

Hashut’s Blessing:

I was SO not being stupid. Yeah, honest. I’ma edit the post to point out I was incorrect to make sure nobody accidentally thinks I was right.

I’d blush if stone cheeks had blood in them…

Novos:

One more question about this item and I know it’s probably been asked and answered 100 times.

There is no specific wording on how many times per turn it can be used. Can I use it in my magic phase as well as my opponents, ergo twice per turn and 12 times per game.

Perhaps there is something in the brb stating that items cannot be used more than once per game turn?

Just curious

Thanks all!

Yodrin:

Yes, in both magic phases, 12 times:)
