[Archive] How would you like your models judged?

Joshmohr:

Ive always been a straight-forward person, but when it comes to miniatures, what do you all prefer? For someone to point out flaws, Point out the best parts, or just BS you? I think this thread would give us all a hand when it comes to rating other peoples models.

AGPO:

I think the most important thing is constructive criticism. There’s a big difference between giving helpful advice which can improve someone’s painting and just having a go at them for not being as good as you or others. It goes both ways however; if you’re not willing to at least listen to advice there’s not much point posting pics.

Remember we all have different standards and we can’t all be like Snotling or Ishkur. Giving encouragement is a big part of what we’re about here, and Chaos Dwarfs are anarmy where you have to push yourself modelling wise (unless you’re very rich indeed or get some great ebay bargains).

tjub:

A mix between the two first, ofcourse I want to know what people like and what not. Not that it matters really, as long as you are saticfied yourself. But its something to keep in mind for the next model…

G.2:

I would have to agree with tjub. I think a mix of the first two “styles” of reviewing is always nice.

i. You can always improve your minis (no matter how good you think you are), or at least learn a new technique or tip

ii. It is nice to hear that you have done something nice/appealling, so as to get praise for it.

nitroglysarine:

Personally i’d like a complement sandwich.

good point

bad point

good point

hmmmmm, sandwich. NOM

Loki:

I am with Tjub on this a little of both is the best way

Grimstonefire:

I agree, somewhere between the first two.

Getting ‘constructive’ feedback all the time without any actual positive comments can make mini you’re proud of seem worse.  So mostly constructive but with a few ‘I think you did X really well’ comments is best.

Obsidian:

Point out the good things which I like and give advice on how to improve weaker parts (weaker in my opinion) if there are any. I think I do that all the time but to be honest I don’t think on this board it is much listened to most of the time.

Ogrob:

I agree with what’s been posted above, positive comments are a very good motivation to keep painting, while constructive critisism is great to help you improve. When I post pictures, I want both, and I also try to provide the same when I comment on someone elses paintjob.

nitroglysarine:

One thing I don’t like is criticism that is a bit to late. eg:

Say “i don’t like your beard, why not make it bigger” when i posted a fully painted unit of miniatures is a bit redundant.

But I guess it could help for future models… hmmm, got me thinking now.

snowblizz:

Lol! I was going to say I wanted to pick both two first options, but it seems I was beaten to the punch.

I don’t want to be the guy who only gives critic so I try to point out problem areas and mention stuff that they got right.

I must admit I think The Forum sugar coats pretty heavily sometimes. I understand the idea about positive reinforcement, probably because that was not exactly my parents’ strong side, but still…

Baggronor:

I too am with Tjub.
I think its fair to expect decent manners from posters, no matter your skill level, and you don’t lose anything by encouraging others. That said, you don’t gain anything if they see an area that could be improved and stay quiet for fear of hurting your feelings. A bit of both is ideal imo; encouragement tempered with constructive feedback. Over-the-top negative comments are counter-productive and it can be a fine line between honesty and rudeness.

I must admit I think The Forum sugar coats pretty heavily sometimes.
True. But that is a million times more preferable compared to somewhere like Frothers imo.

Zanko:

Nothing more to say!

Like tjub already mentioned a mix of the first two statements is ideal!

… and if it is said in a kind and contructive way - perfect!

                     :hashut

Torped:

I like straight up constructive criticism if the model is WIP, so I can improve it, but for a finished model, a mix of the first two is good, IMO. Not frothers level, mind. Those guys can be down right venomous.

Swissdictator:

Tjub summed it up well…

Tell me what is bad, and how I can improve it so my future works are great.

Tell me what I did right, so I know what works and keep at that technique or idea… and not give it up due to not knowing people liked it.

Abecedar:

a mix of good and bad points is always best and definitely don’t “candy coat it”

Bassman:

Nice thread.

Like many people I think that a balance between costructive criticism and pointing out best parts is great.

I love discussions about miniatures, about sculpting as well as painting. Sometimes I like to indulge in discussions about different aspects of a miniature and what the sculptor/painter was amining for. I think this really helps improving modelling and… well… it’s real fun!

Sometimes I feel the most I see a potential of an artist the more I want to push him/her to get better. So pointing out what I like and what could be improved is really important. That’s why even Baggronor received my attentions :stuck_out_tongue:

Most important of all: be polite! Nothing really helps more than good manners.

It’s so annoying to read flaming wars, I do normally skip a thread when a flame war starts :expressionless:

Damn right, everyone needs constructive criticism, especially megalomaniacs like me ;)
