Kera foehunter:

So why don’t they give you paint brushes ??

Tarrakk Blackhand:

It’s probably because the brushes would be ruined too easily.

Paint and glue you can keep using until it runs out, tools can get collected again at the end of the lesson, but if you let a brush harden with paint in it, it’s pretty much over.

Groznit Goregut:

Brushes can be ruined really easily if you don’t know what you are doing. Brushes can get pretty expensive, too. I recently sprang for the full sable brushes and am struggling to keep them clean enough. Still, these brushes are so nice and much better than any GW brush.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

I’ll second that on the GW brushes. I find they’re too “One size fits all” for my liking. I use a 20/0 brush for the ultra fine details, like eyes, and that brush was more than $5.00. My pinstriping brush was $12.00! If GW had to supply that much in brushes…well, it would add up fast!

Kera foehunter:

well gw could throw in a (o) brush and teach how to take care of one

come on it there stuff and paint

Tarrakk Blackhand:

I think it’s also a way for them to sell a brush at the event. Another secret marketing ploy.

Kera foehunter:

you could be right ! i remember my cheep crappy brushes at first to

Khan!:

Kool! Are you still in Calgary?

Tarrakk Blackhand
Indeed, although not for much longer. I expect to head east for grad studies.

Tarrakk Blackhand
Yes, that is exactly it! Also brushes get wrecked easily.

I heartily recommend getting Pink Soap for cleaning your brushes. Its cheap and does a great job and if you dip your brushes between paint sessions in Pink Soap, they'll protect the shape/point of your brush. You should be able to get it from any good artist store in North America. It might be available in the UK as well - I distinctly remember the smell of it from art classes as a kid when I grew up in the UK, it just might not be called Pink Soap. It will also resurrect dead brushes with dried paint on them, although not completely. It helps a ton, especially if you are using Kolinsky Sable.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Darn Kahn. I was hoping you’d like to come out to my hobby store in High River for a game.

Kera foehunter:

i have to agree with Grndl that pink soap is the best!!

Ah, that might be cool. It's a good idea, although to tell you the truth I don't have a vehicle to get to High River! I am a poor student :( I would not be opposed to keeping the idea in mind, might get something to work in the post-April spring when all of my writing is done.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Sure! I am going to re-arrange my model train section to put a gamming table in there. Maybe then it will work. Too bad the C-train doesn’t come out here. However…Greyhound does and the GH station is only 6 blocks from the store.

You are assuming that we didn't.

I'm going to pull back the GW curtain for just a bit and give you an idea of how we did this.

First in our store, we had one pot of every color out on our paint stations to be used by anyone getting painting lessons. Second, we also had a stack of 'used' and 'slightly used' brushes, to also by used by anyone.

We also had our staff brushes (hands off, or I'll break your fingers) and then a special set of 'Academy brushes' These brushes were issued to the student and every bit of care was paid to make sure everyone knew how to care for the brushes. We also had paper towels, water cups, etc to use as well.

there is more but that is really all that pertains to this thread currently.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

So why did times change?

Yep, I wrote up a huge thing about pink soap in another thread

this is what it looks like

I swear by this stuff and it not only cleans but it protects andpoints your bristles better than anything

http://www.misterart.com/g7783/Mona-Lisa-Pink-Brush-Soap.htm this link also has some cool ideas for uses of pink soap outside of bristle cleaning.

Good question. Sometimes it's the staff that provide more than is necessary. So you get great service from one store and from another you get looked down on.

I mark it up to personal achievement and personal pride. I wanted people leaving the store and wanting to come back and bring their friends too.

I knew managers that couldn't wait to leave and didn't care about the hobby.

Even though I was a part time employee (basically what is referred to in the UK as keytime) I worked harder and more efficiently than the full time staff. it had to do alot with me being in my 30's and most of my managers and staff being in their 20's.

I also mark it up to maturity and responsibility.

Even though GW has a standard rule for something, some black shirts would find ways to skirt the rule or bend it to get what they wanted out of it.. I would bet my red shirt against most others when it came to customer service.

I only had three bad incidents and had to throw out one of my friends and ban him from the store for being an arsehat. I banned a fellow church member from the store for shoplifting and had 2 brothers banned for trying to shoplift.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

That sux! why is it that the "Good ones" always do so much bad?

two_heads_talking:

The ironic part was that he just recieved abou 165 dollars worth of tanks the week before. Getting banned for stealing a rhino is just silly, but GW has a ‘to the fullest extent of the law’… This same young man, just recently joined the Army and before he went, he sought me out and thanked me for what I had done. he was 14 years old I think.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Funny how sometimes just the simplest things can change a person for the better.
