[Archive] Knock Offs from China/Hong Kong

snowblizz:

I have been tempted to get recasts and partly that's because Forgeworld shipping costs/pricing are stupid. At 15% of your order (for us outside the UK) it punishes you for making larger orders! I have been turned off buying from them several times when I start to calculate the shipping costs, if other companies based around the world can offer reasonable shipping charges to me, Why cant Forgeworld?

Ulgurstasta
Shipping charges are 12% in the UK 15% outside. So 3% more for international. Not bad actually. Though % based shipping is silly.
However:
Orders of £250.00 or more have no shipping charges and are shipped using UPS Express Delivery.
That's how you buy FW stuff.
Point of order ! everything is made in china. China own most of our countries  by buying our dept
So in a round about way  China own Forge world.. so eather way you paying China..

Kera foehunter
That is so staggeringly incorrect I don't know whether to laugh or weep.
The little grain of truth in there just got mauled by a huge Dragon of Incorrectness.

Not if you get charged import duties by customs for importing more than £200 worth of goods it isn't.

That's how we did it. A guy I knew in Sweden needed some more £££ for the order so I jumped on with a KoS and some bitz.

I'd feel sorry, but I can't even import £200 for free. I think the limit is around 50, or so. Fun when you want to trade minis.
However, European Union helps me here, EU FTW! Hashut knows there's little benefit in it usually.

I've made 3 or 4 orders over the 250 and never been charged anything from customs (here in the US). It's really the best way to order, but 250 lbs is around $400, so it's not chump change. I want to put an order in for 9 K'daai Fireborn, but that will cost me about $30 in shipping that I really don't want to pay. So, I either wait for the Bull Centaurs to be released and put in a combined order, or put out feelers to my friends and see if they want to put in a combo order for anything they might want. One buddy of mine said he's looking at the Skin Wolves, another wants to get the weathering powder sets. If I can get close to the 250, I'll probably just buy another Magma Cannon, Dreadquake (something I don't have yet), or perhaps even something for my Nurgle Marauder army. Anything to get me to that 250. Crazy thing is, I've been looking at the those ebay auctions, specifically so I don't have to pay crazy shipping, but had no idea they were recasts.

khedyarl:

Yeah, over the last few years, I’ve built a 3k Renegade of vraks list, and now I’ve bought upwards of 4k of LoA, every time I order I make sure I save until I can do the 250 pound order, or go in with some friends.

Canadian customs has never nailed me once on FW stuff in literally a dozen orders… though, that said, the order I’m waiting on is probably going to be the one.

I think it’s a shame these ‘knock offs’ have been stopped. FW prices are way over the top (even without shipping). Ah well. I’m just glad I’ve got a big hatter army and I don’t want any of those silly youngbeards

Stopped? They really can't be stopped & there are still suspect "Forge World" listings on eBay. The glory of eBay for a recaster is that it is nearly impossible to get shut down, especially if you are rolling goods out of multiple accounts.

FW prices are not out of line with similar "premium" hobby goods. I suspect that most folks complaining about the price of FW goods never set foot into AFV modelling. Similarly, "shipping" needs to be understood to really mean "additional revenue contribution plus P&P".:D

FW does need some SERIOUS lessons in how to pack for overseas shipments and needs to use the 1-2-3 rule: Every single item wrapped 2X in bubble wrap and put into a box made of cardboard that is at least 3mm thick. It should be the simple assumption that, at some point along the way, the package will be dropped, thrown, stepped on, and endure all manner of extreme environmental conditions.

True that. I make PLENTY of money, and don't mind a bargain when I see one. Really try to show GW less sympathy, all manufacturers from a variety of industries (be it electronics to high end fashion) have their copyrighted TVs, Purses, apparel, etc copied and sold.. Truthfully, it doesnt bother me when i go to a "big Box" store, and it doesnt bother me now.
At the end of the day it's capitalism and economic globalization.
Think of it this way.. cheap knock offs are coming whether you like it or not, for cheap labor.... if the western world are losing their jobs to these countries why not take advantage of the small benefits of cheaper goods?
I promise you, the corp braintrust at a certain minature manufacurer cares less if you go broke buying their stuff. and probably buys discounted stuff (knock offs) a couple times in their own personal lives.

I for one hope it stays going. screw what's politically correct.
more chaos dwarf goodness for me!! mwahaha

brotsorrow:

I agree. I'd never buy a recast of a miniature unless that miniature was no longer in production. Personally, I just use proxy models while I slowly build out my army. Besides, I thought FW and GW had excellent customer service. Every time I'd had miscasts or the wrong items I just had to go to my local store and they would fix everything! I don't have a local store anymore, but I can't imagine that they wouldn't get you a new model if the one you ordered was miscast. Broken spikes and things can just be glued and green stuffed back on.

Just my thoughts on the matter...

Support the companies that create the games you enjoy. Otherwise, there wont be any games being supported that you enjoy anymore.

Valrim
I agree with what you say here, but when i spend X amount of dollars plus 15% shipping - i expect that 15% to go towards bubble wrap and a sturdy box.
I am happy to report though that i received my Iron Daemon last week and it was well packaged Mind you, i only counted the pieces and put it back in the box till i finish my dwarfs with GWs

K where are you in Canada? I'm in southern ontario and will be putting in an order soon to FW

TBH - as I've said before the quality of FW castings also leaves alot to be desired.

As I've said I've received recasts that, in almost every case in my experience, have been of a much better casting quality than stuff ordered directly from FW, which is seriously annoying - recent FW purchases (even chaos dwarves) haven't exactly inspired me with confidence in this regard either.

Seriously, if some guy in China can make a mould of your sculpts and then crank them out with better castings than you'd get when ordering direct from FW then people are going to buy into them. Which is really sad, considering it's the fantastic designs and original sculpts we love FW for. I know they're a small operation, but they need to step it up in this regard.

khedyarl:

Northern BC, Brotsorrow. Prince George.

I’m anxiously awaiting the following in one gigantic box:

Drazoath

Unridden Bale Taurus

20 more Fireglaives (which brings me to 40)

Another Dreadquake

Deathshrieker

Daemonsmith character pack

6 Kdaii

Monstrous Arcana book.

I’m pumped!

cornixt:

Of course, if you buy copies then you aren’t reinvesting in the hobby and new models will be much harder to get made. It’s not like sculpters can go on tour and make money doing live sculpting.

Exactly! sure, FW may be expensive but sculpting models at this level is time consuming, FW have a lot of employed sculptors and they need a proper hourly wage.

They work freelance actually, but in principle I agree.

Oh, I was pretty sure that at least the older guys was employed. Anyway my bad, I must have mix them up with GW.

Thorne:

I can help but say the obvious but really is it more the case that games workshop are pricing themselves out of there own market ? I as a producer of items myself that I have sculpted I see things like this as a huge problem in the future. But can’t help but think gw are doing themselves no favor’s.

i could not disagree more.

part of the advantage of GW charging high prices and making big $ is that they also get to re-invest it into the business. that's why we get monthly new releases! new army books! monthly magazines! so much warhammer goodness to keep us busy. do you think rakham, privateer press or others can come up with new and cool stuff the way GW does? so by buying the knock offs, you also going to shot yourself in the foot. GW will not make as much and will not have as much to re-invest. i can't help but wait to hear complaints like "the new edition is out but my army book has not been updated in 8 years!" OR "these models are 15 years old and suck! every other army got new models!" OR "FW released chaos dwarfs but now they haven't been updated in 10 years!"

truth is, if you think the prices are so ridiculous and they're making a killing sitting in their leather chairs, why not buy GW stock? they offer a decent dividend and if a quarter of what you say is true, the stock can only go up from here?
