A very sparse battle report for you all. But better than nothing (maybe).
I’ve been typing this up for a while but some issues occurred.
Late last year I got two KoW games in and one more just last month, but I have literally had bugger-all free time since November to write something up. Due to my daughter getting married two weeks ago and having an after wedding party in my back yard last weekend. The week before I managed to saw my left index finger down to the bone and I?Tve got my right bandaged up after having carpal tunnel surgery done this week. Right now though I?Tm only getting this done because I?Tm laid up in bed with a crook back.
And to make it worse I have a bare 2 pictures, both from the first game.
Last Years Game 1. Abyssal Dwarfs v?Ts Skeletons
My army from memory was 2 rocket launchers, a heavy mortar, 2 Iron Casters, 2 units of Gargoyles, 2 reg?Ts of Bull Centaurs, a 3 block of lesser golems and 1 greater Golem. A Horde of Black souls and a Horde of Decimators.
Glens Army was bony. Bones on horses and in Hordes and flying bones and bones walking ??.
Initial set up.
And just a turn or so into the game.
I did a pretty standard (for me) line-up. I mirror imaged the army as I set up my units. Went out from the centre. My two hordes placed either side of the central war machine area, then heavy hitters and chaff spread out the wings. This may seem sort of lazy and unimaginative I know but I?Tve learnt over the years to not try to out-think my opponent. That normally leads to disaster. It also helps with my sense of order in things and it works for me most days.
Any way Glen played his skeletons, tomb kings or whatever they are called.
To cut a long story short, I pretty much destroyed them. The indirect fire did well chewing him up while percentage wise his rock lobbers missed more than mine. The gargoyles did their job slowing some units down, doing a few points of damage before dying. This let the heavy hitters get amongst them and start routing them. My Blacksouls and Decimators never got into combat this game.
Last Years Game 2. Goblins v?Ts Glens Skeletons.
(In brief this time).
I played goblins this time because we needed some variety brought back into games at the club.
And in my eyes they count as my CD?Ts slaves anyway.
Pretty much the same this time. If I remember rightly. My rock lobbers did some nice damage to him as I let him roll forward and he rolled abysmally on his long range attacks.
Once his movements became clear, I managed to target his heavy hitters with my big hitters and then his army collapsed.
Abyssal Dwarfs v?Ts Chris?Ts Vampyres of some sort.
Again my army has to be from memory as in the excitement of it all no photos were taken. So I used much the same line-up as before, having 2 rocket launchers, a heavy mortar, 1 Iron Caster, 2 units of Gargoyles, 2 Reg?Ts of Bull Centaurs, a Reg of lesser golems and 1 greater Golem. A regiment and a Horde of Black Souls and a Horde of Decimators. Oh and Basuu the Vile.
Chriss?Ts army had 2 or 3 units on horses, 2 regiments of were-woofs. 2 Vamp heroes, a BSB, 2 hordes of ghouls and a couple of regiments of other things.
This time I tried to think about the deployment as Chris is a much formidable player. With the terrain set up as it was I decided I had to have my war machines the right hand side of the board for line of sight reasons and protect them with the Decimator horde and the gargoyles. Chris had placed two hordes, some chaff regiments and a mounted unit on a quick path towards the war machine area on the shorter (my) right field and his heavy hitters piled up on his right wider flank. So I placed my Half-breeds in the centre as a re-action force and my Golems on the far left with the Blacksouls behind them.
As expected Chris sent his right side heavy force angling down towards my left flank, in response I sent the golems forward but in towards the centre and drew the black souls back from left field to centre rear, creating a more solid defence line. This led him to bring his regiments of were-woofs into initial conflict with the golems as opposed to the half-breeds. Against these hard hitters they didn?Tt fare as well as they have for me previously but they did their job. Stopped the were-woofs and a Vampyre hero for several turns and blocked access of his large cavalry unit forcing it around the whole edge of the board. This gave time for my Half-breeds to dispatch the regiment that got through the centre temple terrain and join in on the defeat of one of the were-woof regiments and the other was severely hurt. But all the golems, Basuu and a regiment of Half-breeds had perished. By now though his cavalry had arrived and it took them 2 or 3 turns to dispatch the Blacksouls but that virtually ended my defences on my left flank.
Over on the right, my luck with the big ranged attacks wasn?Tt as good this time around and though they didn?Tt destroy any units this time they did add some damage to his hordes. My gargoyles sacrificed themselves and slowed down his advance towards the war machines. But when he got his hordes in range of the Decimators that was as far as they got and they died.
One last round in which his vampire lord dispatched the Blacksouls regiment guarding the war machines right flank and took a solid round of fire without dying. The cavalry eliminated the last of my half-breeds and time was up - game over. Points wise he won but not by enough to call it a solid victory.
Really enjoyed it. And just getting the games played has drawn a WHFB Ogre and a Human player out of the wilds.
Great! I love KoW as you might know… Btw, regarding your 2nd pic. Is that an old rulebook? I recommend using v2 rules as well as CoK2018. I assume you know all about easyarmy.com for free and great army lists!
Great to see more proper Dawi Zharr on the field in Kings of War! Hope your having fun it!
I must say the lack of terrain is rather shocking though - KoW is a terrain heavy war game. calling for 7ish pieces of terrain + obstices as a minimum guideline.
Glen and I were rushed so we played on a desert. Okay we was lazy. Doesn’t the table cloth count at least?
The game with Chris had a central temple and a half dozen clumps of trees which was much better.
As to the rulebooks, Glen and I were hopelessly confused as to which book version was which at the time. But Chris has put me onto “Easy Army” so that will make life much simpler. I haven’t seen the ClashofKings stuff, sort of went into “what-more-new rules shock” and didn’t care.
I am having fun again. I do need it. As much of a collector as I became it started to feel really pointless without a game to play.
The week before I managed to saw my left index finger down to the bone and I?Tve got my right bandaged up after having carpal tunnel surgery done this week. Right now though I?Tm only getting this done because I?Tm laid up in bed with a crook back.

OMG!
I thought that us Chaos Dwarfs were supposed to deal out the punishment and pain, not receive it!
Or was it a Sneaky Git assassination attempt?
Well please take care of yourself, you and me are the oldest farts here, so don't die on me and leave me as the sole old man :)
Yeah. the new son-in-law must be a sneaky git (he builds the things that make computers do things for ridiculous amounts of money) and he has a nefarious plan. He’s already stolen my daughter.
So having to build a back deck on the house because the drunks at the wedding “might” trip on the crack in the concrete and having to get under the house to jack it up so the back door would open properly… that’s all his fault.
KoW v2: and I recommend you get the hardback for the fluff etc.
Mighty Empires: got the army lists for the armies not in the rulebook. No need unless you want the fluff parts.
Edge of the Abyss: Fluff and a few scenarios from last years campaign. Also got some more Living Legends as well as rules for Formations.
Clash of Kings 2018: Fluff post EotA and conclusion. Formations for the races not included in the EotA as well as a whole bunch of new Living Legends. More Spells and more Magic items. As well as the “tweaks for 2018”. Oh and 12 updated missions as well.
There are other older books as well, Cok17 and a few campaigns. I got them all and never regretted it, but cant say they are necessary at all to enjoy the game.

I have 4 of the books en-route. KoW full Ed, Gamers Ed, Clash of Kings and Destiny of Kings all because to you. Please re-imburse my bank account before the wife finds out (lol). They are coming from 'Mighty Ape' - look them up if you are southern half of the world based. They unluckily didn't have edge of the Abyss. I missed that campaign but not from lack of trying here.
A better Battle report is in the wind from my last game.
ok, I really must convince one of my pals to get a game in… I miss fielding my forces so much… and now that I’ve dedicated myself to finish the collection they won’t do any good just sitting on a shelf! They’ve got to see the field of battle! You’ve inspired me!
