Billy Ocean:

So, I took a little break from painting my actual army to do something a bit different. As I detailed in this thread I recently took place in a tournament called Sparkle Party Death Match 3. Each player was allowed to add a “Sparkle Giant” to their army list at no additional points cost, who then had special tasks to accomplish in games for bonus points. Everybody was expected to bring a giant model themed towards their army.

I had a hard time finding a model that would fit in well with my army. Luckily, just a month before the tournament, GW released the 40k Hellbrute kit and I was sold. Its truly a fantastic kit, with loads of weapon options, some of which don’t involve guns luckily! Fluff-wise, I’m imagining this to be a kind of Magma Golem. My demonsmiths would have built the metal structure, and then coaxed a magma demon to pour himself into/over it and stomp around :). In painting terms, I wanted all the fleshy bits to look like magma, and the metallic bits to fit in with my army’s green-gold-silver color scheme.

1. He’s kind of a small model so I mounted him on a big-ass rock (cork) so that he could look other sparkle giants in the eye and not feel too intimidated. Proportionally, I think he’s perfect for a dwarf giant - twice as short and twice as broad as most of the other giants!

2. I made very few modifications to the models. I put in a chaos dwarf head rather than one of the ones provided, and used a bit of greenstuff to raise the torso so it could be rotated more - otherwise you could only assemble the model in a very flat static pose.

3. Back of the model - lots of magma-flesh to paint here.

4. Butt-shot. Because, you know, why not? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

5. Dawi-Zharr rune on this shoulder.

6. Signature on this shoulder (B.O. in Khazalid).

7. I guess now the tournament is over, I will use this guy as a Siege giant in non-competitive games, and make a nested base to use him as a second destroyer in bigger games. Anyway, I’m glad that the tournament prompted me to paint a model I would have never even considered otherwise - it was a lot of fun and I’m pleased with the result.

Admiral:

Sparkle Giant.

That tournament sounded like a lot of fun. The model actually fit quite well in WHFB for Chaos Dwarfs. Nice paintjob!

Ben Saunders:

+1. I’d never have considered a Hellbrute, but he fits surprisingly well.

Yodrin:

Sparkle Giant - cool! And he looks very cool, very nice colors and paint job!

Dînadan:

Nice idea - pity hellbrutes aren’t cheaper; after seeing yours, it makes me think they’d make good Fireborn alternatives

Billy Ocean:

Yeh its an expensive model, plus really too big to use as Fireborn. This guy is really broad, I’m sure they wouldn’t rank up on 40mm bases. He’s kind of an awkward size for Chaos Dwarfs - too small for Destroyer and too big for Fireborn. If I hadnt needed to paint a Chaos Dwarf giant I would have never considered this model. But I’m glad I did, he was really a lot of fun to assemble and paint. One of the nicest plastic kits I’ve worked with in a while.

Billy Ocean:

Hey guys, I haven’t shown my face round here much recently, haven’t had that much time for hobby and gaming of late. However, the Endtimes saga is really pulling me in. Have read the whole first book and am eagerly awaiting the second. Decided I need to get serious about the hobby again, and get my CD army finished to participate in all the craziness (even tho we won’t participate in the fluff at all I’m sure.

So, I finished off a unit of IG with great weapons - the Titan Wargames Royal Guard. They were lovely models to work with, lots of character and I really enjoyed painting the cloaks in particular:

Made a small filler for the unit, you know, cos painting models is hard ;P. Also it allows me to squeeze in more of the Titan character models which I love.

And I finally got round to painting up a BSB! I used the Titan overlord model - he is striking such a perfect pose for a BSB, I couldn’t resist. Simple conversion to replace his mace with a bannerpole, and the flaming skull basket from the corpse carts completes it. I really spent a long time trying to work in lots of detail to do this model justice. Hope you think it was worth it:

Thats it for now. Hopefully it wont be as long as last time before I can update again!

Admiral:

Wohoo, nice great weapon IG and really nice battle standard bearer! The only things I’d change is the flames. They could do with some more orange and red toward the top, maybe even a dot of black/dark grey out on some of the very tops.

Billy Ocean:

Thanks Admiral. You are definitely right about the flames, they are the thing I’ve struggled with most. I have tried going to darker reds and black at the top and it just ended up looking dirty and messy, I think I just need to work on my smooth blending a bit more. I’m still pretty new to blending colors in general. Will keep trying and hopefully improving in my next models.

tjub:

Original and good painting! That dreadnought works pretty well for CDs…

Yodrin:

Those look awesome!! Love the color scheme! Not a huge fan of green, but you may change my mind on that!!! Very well done Mr!!

Abecedar:

Do look so beautiful when done so well.

Ben Saunders:

Late to the party, but I like the Helbrute. As you say, it’s a shame there’s not a more obvious counts-as use for it (though someone on here is using one as a Hellcannon). It is also an expensive kit, but you can get the Dark Vengeance version fairly cheap.

Malorndk:

Very lovely painting mate <3

TheHoodedMan:

I like the bsb a lot. One can see how much work you put in painting the highlights and the different paints blend very smoothly. The burning heads basket is also a very good and original idea.

The hellbrute is very futuristic but with the painting in your color scheme it fits perfectly with your troops.:hat off
