This thread will log my progress as I (slowly) paint my way through my Chaos Dwarf army, who garrison a desolate mining outpost of the Black Fortress known as Karag Bastak.
At the moment I’m focused on painting the models for my competitive / tournament list, seeing as there are regular tournaments here in Seattle and many painting points on offer that I can’t tap into until my whole army is done! I have the army all assembled (including lots of conversions), but I’ll wait and only post pics of stuff thats fully painted.
For my current list I will need:
Sorcerer Prophet
Castellan BSB
Khan on wolf
Taur’ruk
23 IG w/ HW+Sh
21 IG w/ GW
3 Bull Centaurs w/ GW
3 magma cannons
Destroyer
5 wolf riders w/ spears
(as my army list changes through trial and error, so will the list of models I intend to paint)
With no further ado, here is some work on my first unit, IG w/ HW+Sh.
1. I wanted my color scheme to be a bit different, so I chose a green spot color which I thought would look nice with copper armor, and complement the red-yellow magma on the bases.
2. I love these command models so much and had great fun painting them, especially the champs little grimacing face. I tried to make it look sore and irritated where the little horns are poking through - that can’t be comfortable! (maybe explains the grimacing).
3. And I made a unit filler by mounting one of Baggronor’s beautiful Pyromancers on a cork rock in the middle of a magma pond. Added some cogs to give the impression of a demonsmith’s workshop. I love using unit fillers because it adds a lot of character and variety to units, and also means I need to paint (and buy!) less models.
This unit is nearly finished, so I’ll be able to post a pic of them all in their movement tray soon. And I’ll have a magma cannon to show you my next post.
Thanks for all these nice comments, this is really the type of motivation I was hoping for by becoming active on this forum!
@Admiral, Abecedar is right, these are watch cogs, but I didn’t go dismantling any watches myself. Turns out you can buy bags full of these things on ebay - people use them to make steampunk jewelry apparently. I think I just typed ‘tiny cogs’ (or something like that) into ebay, and got a big pile of them - more than I will ever use - for like 10 bucks. Pretty great. I will be using them on bases throughout the army.
Got a magma cannon finished. Have two more of the same waiting to be painted, but I’m gonna hold off for now until I’ve decided whether I want to replace them with Deathshriekers in my regular list.
1.Made only minor modifications to the model - greenstuffed some magma into the hopper and a bit dripping out the barrel.
2.Kept the color scheme mostly metallic, but had to get a bit of green in there to fit with the army!
3. I like to use round bases for warmachines - square bases interfere too much with the game (people keep thinking they should be closing the door) and I find with no base the wheels get scuffed up. Bit of cork gives a nice basalt effect.
4. Here it is supporting my finished IG unit - two open spots at the front for my BSB and SP. I’m working on a nicer movement tray for them.
Ok, well there may not be much more from me for a little while - I am now taking up the K’daai Destroyer challenge and have a feeling its not going to be a fast model to paint! There is lots of green-stuffed fire all over him which is going to require some patience.
The lava and the green complements each other well. As Thommy said, they’re well painted. Your Magma Cannon look particularly nice on those photos!
It might be a trick of the camera, but if I were in your position I’d want to get some stronger shading into the recesses and lines of the scalemail, especially on the IGs sleeves. Washes are your friend.
