[Archive] Legions of Azgorh - why you should like it

cornixt:

This is not the way the army plays, or any specific rules, but how it fits into Warhammer. I’ve said some of these in a previous message, but that was easy to overlook.

1. Use all your old models! Apart from ordinary Goblins, Orcs and Black Orcs, the LoA army has something that fits all your old models. Hobgoblin Cutthroats come with an extra handweapon option so you can use your old Sneaky Gits, CD warriors can stand in for the Infernal Guard, even the blunderbusses get a look in. The one minor issue is that you may have to rebase your Bull Centaurs, but I’d just add an extra cavalry base per model for now, at least until we know what size base they need to be on.

2. None of the RH units are replaced. Although you can use all of your old models, all of the units have slightly different names, meaning that the rules aren’t superceded or replaced but the units are still obvious for what they are. The exception to this are the Lammasu and Great Taurus, but their rules were done for Storm of Magic anyway.

Examples: Sorcerer-Prophet = Sorcerer Lord, Hobgoblin Cutthroats = Hobgoblins, Bull Centaur Renders = Bull Centaurs

This all adds up to mean that we now have an army list that is probably going to be far more accepted than the RH list is now, but it hasn’t taken over or replaced that list at all; it’s just an alternative with new rules. It also leaves the Chaos Dwarf army open for GW-proper to release, should they ever wish.

So I congratulate the Warhammer Forge for keeping the door open, whilst also giving us a load of new stuff that we can use far more widely. A neat and tidy solution.

I think that’s fair enough, from what I’ve seen/heard. Unfortunately, I have loads of slave units that don’t fit in; but that’s my own fault for inventing units

When I finally get my hands on the book, I’ll certainly be using the list. But I still feel it invites the invention of new themed lists (Temple, Slave Horde etc).

Completely agree!:)

Is't just an alternative list. An alternative list which "should be considered an official list for Warhammer". Which means that the RH list is still playable, such as there were some alternative lists during the Storm of chaos area.

An a very interesting list to play :
The old theme is in : you can play it very defensively, with a hard shooting phase.
But we can now be more threatening, with very good moving units : BC, K'daai fireborn and destroyer, GT and Bale taurus, Lammasu, Hellcannon. Enough to play agressive, and not stand and shoot...

For tournament players, the strong part will be to make the list allowed in tournaments...
I'm allowed to play it in a next tourney, but I know that the "allowed or not" point in next tournaments will depend of what the player will play : strong elements (such as magma cannon, destroyer, ...) and it won't be anymore, or a mix of both strong and soft elements, and it would be.

Thommy H:

I agree with everything in this thread. I had no intention of ever making an actual “Legion of Azgorh” army - just using these new rules for my existing collection, and using the new ideas as a springboard for my own. It’s really just an update of Ravening Hordes in my eyes - a quasi-official army list that makes an excellent starting point.

I think, with Storm of Magic and the Grand Army of Chaos stuff in this book, we live in an age of Warhammer where it’s going to be increasingly acceptable to think outside of the current paradigm of “official Armies books”, and that can only be a good thing for Chaos Dwarf players and collectors.

I agree with you completely on this one, Thommy. There are some ideas I really like from what I’ve seen of the new book, and some ideas I like less. So it seems natural, given how small a slice of CD society the book covers, to write a more general list (or other themed lists) and try to cover other areas - using the best bits of the list as guidance.

It’s an 8th edition compatible CD army with some cool new figures.

Good enough for me.

I quite agree! :cheers

MartyF:

I’m happy to have lots of new cool models and a new book I have thoroughly enjoyed reading, irrespective of what happens to the list. The models I’ll always find a use for, whether it’s in one of the great fan made lists or as a standard dwarf list

I’d like to thank the forgeworld guys for all the work they have done so far and hopefully they can continue to help our return to the warhammer fold!
